My PDP
This is my Personal Development Portfolio(PDP).
My PDP offers a structure of all the practical, video, and animation projects I have edited, produced and created through out my 3 year course of Film Video and Interactive Arts at Middlesex University.
This self-reflexive account shows all my learning and personal development at my time in University. It reflects on what i've learnt in this last three years, what I have become good at and what I'm hoping to develop further. I have reviewed my own skill levels and what I have learned from each project both within and outside the modules; including onset work as a runner. I have included the process of taking each project from an idea to realisation; such as my research process, storyboard, filming, editing and finally screening each project. I reflected on what worked well, what didn't for each project. What my learning outcomes were; that is the knowledge and skills acquired from each project. I have included links to each project I have worked on and links from other films and animations that have inspired me, all to show my thinking and learning process.
Having gone through all my projects I have found myself to have developed fantastic editing skills, which i'm hoping to develop further. Softwares I can use proficiently include: Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Logic, Pro Tools, iPhoto, After Effects, Aperture, Photoshop, illustrator and InDesign. Productivity Softwares such as Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook The aim of this PDP Ebook is to show how have developed my editing skills.
Please Click on the links on the right hand side to view my recent works.
If you have more time have a look at my PDP.

Editing Burlesque Documentary
I have been working on syncing sound from the radio mics with the picture.
Once that was done, I have started trying to create a structure but i'm still struggling terribly. I feel maybe drawing the structure out on paper might help. So far, ive been ensuring that whnever there is a shor of the interviews, I place cuts to shots that illustrates what is been said so the audience will take this cuts and shots as a cue from the commentary and understand the images as evidence or demonstration for what is said.
I've also being using the sound of music and dancing from the shows (which was recorded separately) as an underlay for the shots of the interviews because I feel adding this ambience sounds will allow the audience to engage with the world of the documentary. It will also help to create a sense of sound and image bearing indexical relationship to its source.

Questions for interviews
Here are the questions I have come up with for the burlesque performers interviews. QUESTIONS FOR PERFORMERS Tell us a little about yourself. Your name and what you do. How and why did you become a burlesque performer and teacher? What is burlesque? Tell us a little bit of the history of Burlesque. Are there different types or style of Burlesque, if yes, what style of burlesque do you perform? Does the act of Burlesque performance, the costumes and routines alter your ego? Modern day burlesque is enjoyed by both men and women, do you think they have different reasons for coming to the shows. What are your spectators reaction to your performances? When on stage do you gain power, control and confidence through both the male and female gaze? If yes, how and why? There is often a debate as to whether Burlesque is a performance art or simply stripping and a retrograde to the feminist movement, what is your opinion on that. Is there anything empowering about Burlesque? What do you want your audiences to take away from your performance? Tell us a little about your the Workshops and how they came about? How often do you run your workshops and where? Why do you think women attend this workshops? What is the main aim of your workshop and what do you want your students to gain from these workshops Can Men perform burlesque? What do your partner, boyfriend, husband and parents think of your profession? What is the best and worst thing about Burlesque ?

Influences
Ive beelow watching some documentaries and movies to get some inspiration for my documentary.
Dream girls - Kim Longinotto & Jano Williams (1993) Documentary about a Japanese musical theatre; Takarazuka Revue. Which is an all female cast theatre experience that gives the Japanese women a platform to express themselves, thousands apply to join every year but one a few are chosen. The few that are chosen endure years of highly disciplined and reclusive lives before they can join the Revue, choosing male or female roles. This helped me to decide on how to structure my documentary as the narrative structure of this documentary flowed seamlessly and kept the audience engaged through out.
Women Without Men - Shirin Neshat (2009) Based on on a 1989 novel by Shahrnush Parsipur, this brings together the political and personal story of four women whose lives are affected by the turbulence of the Anti-Mossadeq coup. Their destinies converge in a visually stunning orchad garden where they find companionship and independence. This helped me to figure out how to tell a story from different point of views, especially as I will be interviewing a number of performers. Aesthetically, the rich colours and beautiful frames encouraged me to think of colours and how to frame my characters during the interviews.
A Wink and a Smile - Deidre Allen Timmons (2008) A documentary that follows 10 women from their early 20's to early 50's in Seattle. The women take a six weeks course, with the aim of performing on stage after the completion of the course as a way to boost their self-esteem and strengthen their sexual confidence. This gave me a better understanding of why Burlesque has become so appealing to women.

Burlesque Documentary Treatment
Having spent the last couple of weeks researching the Burlesque scene around London, I've met s number of compere's, bloggers and performers, I now comfortable able what my documentary is really going to be about and what I aim to achieve. The Key Message: I want to show that burlesque is not a retrograde to feminism: a step backwards rather it's a confident, boundary pushing, progressive art form particularly providing a platform, a theatrical space for women and even men to express themselves by satirising society's perception of what femininity and even masculinity is, and riffing on it. My documentary will de-stigmatize burlesque as just plain strip tease. The key aim: My documentary will explore why so many women and even men of different shapes and sizes decide to become Burlesque performers? My documentary will show and explain some of the questions surrounding the large interest amongst female audiences that attend the shoes. Originality: There's being a number of documentaries made about burlesque most of which focused on the American Burlesque which is an offshoot of the Victorian theatrical Burlesque, non of the documentaries have focused on British Burlesque in the London scene which is where burlesque began and focuses more on comedy. I will also show some boylesque performers (men taking burlesque). All of which gives my documentary a unique point of view. Relevance: With shows and performances running every night of the week in the london club nights autumn calendar, and tickets selling out within 24hrs for Dita Von Teese show at Koko in Camden. The popularity of the highly successful Hurly Burly west end show starring Miss Polly Rae, the popularity of cabaret and burlesque clubs like Volupte and the Wambam Club. The burlesque scene has become one of the fastest growing scene in London that continues to stimulate epistephilia amongst people who have never been to a burlesque show. However it also carries a stigma of just being plain striptease. Although the removal of clothing and the tease are elements of it, many other stage and entertainment skills are required. Most of the performers are also trained musicians, singers, hoofers, magicians, fire-eaters, jugglers, comics, mimes, trapeze artists and so on.Burlesque is a performance art, that involves political satires, musical theatre parody, comedy and entertainment. All of which my documentary will show. NARRATIVE STRUCTURE: Under Bill Nichols modes of Documentary (2001), my documentary will be an Expository mode. My documentary will have a conventional narrative structure using Continuity editing devices such as Establishing Shot/ re-establishing shots to establish locations, distance between characters and objects within a scene to he orientate the audience. As we'll be filming different performers in Different locations. Eye-Level Shots; the camera will be placed at a height that is equivalent to that of the performers when we interview them and Direct relationship between images and voice-over, for example when the narrator discusses the history of Burlesque, there will archival images of Burlesque performances. Interviews will be used only in support of the film's argument.

Researching Burlesque
Ive started researching my chosen topic; Burlesque. I need to understand what Burlesque is, how it began? In the 19th Century, the term "burlesque" was applied to a wide range of comic plays, including non-musicals. Beginning in the 1840s, these works entertained the lower and middle classes in Great Britain and the United States by making fun of (or "burlesquing") the operas, plays and social habits of the upper classes. These shows used comedy and music to challenge the established way of looking at things. Everything from Shakespearean drama to the craze for Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind could inspire a full-length burlesque spoof. In the late 1860s, Lydia Thompson's British burlesque troupe became New York's biggest theatrical sensation. Their first hit was Ixion (1868), a mythological spoof that had women in revealing tights playing men's roles. In the Victorian age, when proper women went to great lengths to hide their physical form beneath bustles, hoops and frills, the idea of young ladies appearing onstage in tights was a powerful challenge. Underdressed women playing sexual aggressors, combining good looks with impertinent comedy – in a production written and managed by a woman? What I've also noticed from the burlesque shows I have been attending is that a large proportion of the audience members are women, I need to find out and understand why this is. I think this is particularly interesting as I previously assumed the target audience might be more Male focused.

Final Year Project
TASK FOR FINAL YEAR PROJECT
To produce a 15min moving image work.
AIMS To manage a complex and large-scale project from first proposal to completion; To demonstrate in the execution of the project, high level academic and practical skills as appropriate in the exploration of the chosen aspect of the film medium To present the work effectively to others, both as a work-in-progress and as a completed project Contributing to at least two other filmmaking projects. Finally presented publicly at the end of the module with a clear sense of audience and context.
My Idea
I was invited to come to a Burlesque show by a friend, for a fun night out. Prior to attending a Burlesque show, I didn't really know what to expect from a burlesque show, I personally took a preconceived bias view along with me. However on getting to the show, my notions were completely changed, I was in a room, filled with a largely female audience, all enjoying a comedic, sexy, satirical entertainment. This was certainly not what I expected. I wanted to show others what burlesque really meant, that was it... There and then I decided I wanted to make a 15 minute documentary on Burlesque.

The encounter show / conclusion
Last night went really well, except for the catalogue issue.
We had a full house at the Roxy Bar and everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves, David also did a good job as the Conpere. It was also great to see all our months hard work pay off and see all our shorts on the big screen. I personally think I've done a good job as the project mabager and I'm so grateful to Dasa, Nauan, Keiko, Richard and Susanna's help and support to put everything together.
My head hurts a little now so i'll try to post some pictures from the night later and i'll put my short film online soon.
So stay tuned for moreeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!
As Ive written in my reflective essay -
I feel we have created a successful short film both visually and for the storyline considering the time we had and the several obstacles we came across such as the locations, changing DOP’S and being in a small group. If I had to do anything differently, I’ll have more time to cast for actors, get the right locations, get more cut aways and a bigger budget.
I have also thoroughly enjoyed working with Susanna who was the producer for the project, I felt we worked very well together to organize everything that went into the short film and I hope to work with her in other future projects. I’m also pleased with Bernard’s sound recording and efficiency through out all the shoots, I also enjoyed editing with Rodion who also provided us with some of the paintings we used through all the shoots and finally I am very grateful to Samira for getting us the Art gallery location.
In conclusion, I feel I have learnt so much from this project from using the lights, editing, directing and location scouting. Now I know just how much goes into making a film, I feel I’ll definitely be more prepared and do a better job for my 3rd year project.

Final edit for the show
The final edit for the show is done, i've had to do a lot of work on the sound, i've added all the cast and crew and i've found a way to make the transitions seem more smooth, I've added days and times, so there'll be a dark screen like from the opening sequence for each new scene.
fingers crossed tomorrow will go really well.
