Do you ever think about how, while the heart of FGO stays the same— Rea's a perfect fit for canon Guda barring only her sparkles and their canon interest in mecha— it just... utterly flips the framing of its themes? From a shonen-esque coming of age story where growing up means taking on the world and being responsible for your impact on it, in the most extreme and horrific way possible... into a story about parenthood/caretaking, and an unwillingness to surrender any responsibility, even to those who can and/or should share in it, because it's not just your job to be Responsible, but to protect as many people as you can from that responsibility?
On how much no matter hard you can try to protect the ones you love, even- especially- children, you can't shield them from The Horrors that are intrinsic to life In A World? That taking it as a personal responsibility, as a personal failing, can and Will break you unless you learn to finally surrender and share the burden of Responsibility?
That there's no preparing for a life that leads into an empty nest, no matter how long you keep your kids in arm reach where it's safe, because it's rooted in everyone dying on you? That a career you love and home you cherished and children you adore can't save you from when the only thing that's left is a graveyard of even more dreams than bodies.

ON: SASUME'S ELEMENTAL 'FAMILIARS'
I. PREFACE
Shinrei (Sasume's sword, and before her, her mother's) and its abilities can be broken down into two fields: physical, and elemental. Even more broadly, however, it can be considered to cover a trinity of 'life':
The 'non-living' (elemental generation and manipulation)
The 'living' (physical boons, both active and passive)
The 'spiritual' (responding to both its wielders conscious control and their unconscious will, i.e. their anger)
Thusly, the concept of forming pseudo-familiars from elements could be considered the epitome of its entire breadth, combining all three of these fields into one specific utility. That is, molding the elements into the physical shapes of living creatures, and imparting them with unconscious minds/will (as extensions of Sasume's own).
II. HISTORY
However, this aspect of Shinrei's powerset is even more of a blackbox than the rest of it. Yes, because it's a feat so hard to quantify or study, but also because it's an application of skills Sasume invented herself.
While Sasume's knowledge of her mother's skillset was limited to literal child's play and dramatized story, she had never heard of Lyra shaping the elements into specific forms—this makes sense, not because of a skill gap between them, but as Lyra's domain was fire and wind, her utilizing Shinrei for precise 'molding' of elements would've been counterproductive and unintuitive.
And so, Sasume's 'developing' such a technique was not an active attempt to recreate preexisting feats, but merely the intersection of childlike curiosity and practice. She could warp water and twist flames in a vacuum, yes, and practice with methods just as straightforward, but why limit herself to that?
Perhaps it could've been considered inefficient or redunant to an adult mind, but as a child already exploring such mysterious and mystical works, such specific utility seemed only obvious.
And so, a young Sasume would spend years practicing shaping her elements into specific forms and seeing how she could control them after the fact.
Most notably, her favorite form was molding ice into puppy like shapes of all sorts of ages.
(Despite her having yet to see any actual puppies at that point, amusingly enough.)
After leaving home she would similarly focus on 'developing' her familiars along with her physical 'training' during her catatonic years. Though this would further improve her skill in shaping familiars, the exact healthiness of it was... dubious at best, as it allowed her to 'project' her ghosts onto physical forms and further encourage negative feedback loops and spirals.
III. FORMS & UTILITY
While their exact compositions are inherently limited (water, ice, and/or fire), their shapes are limited only by imagination, with their reasons for them being about as varied. Still, due to personal preference, they typically only come few archetypes.
Quadrupeds, and more specifically canines are her 'familiar' of choice, in particular wolves.
Avians are her other staple, with no specific variety being preferred (due to their magical nature superceding the usual limitations).
Fire familiars are the most dangerous by nature, and so (outside of show) are primarily limited to small forms— typically birds— and deployed for sake of precision (to avoid massive swathes of innaccurate flames or needing close, personal proximity to powerful flames). E.g, hypermobile 'firehawks' that can go around ice barricades without needing to destroy or shrinken them first.
Ice familiars are the most versatile and widely used, as they can utilize 'physical' attacks rather than just raw elemental ones. Thus, due to their unique stability, are where large forms are found (such as multiple wolves simultaneously). Their exact uses are more varied, but can be best summarized as 'control' due to their capability to serve as physical, 'harmless' barriers or modes of attack.
Water familiars are seldom used, due to their hyperlimited efficacy and ice familiars overpowering them across the board. Still, they do exist and can be used, rare though it might be.
All else being equal, avians are favored for aerial mobility while wolves are favored for ground mobility.
Otherwise, as they're primarily a mere extension of Sasume's default elemental powers, their capabilities are not technically any different from one another— or standard elemental control, for that matter.
They can, however, function as messengers if desired (if provided with written or otherwise physical messages to transport), due to nebulous ability to exist beyond Shinrei's usual active range.
IV. CAPABILITIES (& CAN-NOT'S)
Sasume's familiars CANNOT:
Vocalize, nor communicate with other animals—they are human-crafted constructs, not genuine animals brought to life.
Reform themselves if destroyed, nor spontaneously generate
Shape further familiars themselves
Share their 'senses' with Sasume—their 'connection' is one-way
Feel pain, or any other emotions nor physical sensations (beyond a base awareness of their 'body's' state and positioning)
Have personal 'memories' or 'personalities'
They CAN:
Exist 'out of bounds' of Sasume/Shinrei's 'range'
Sustain their forms when Shinrei is unactive (or Sasume incapacitated), for similar reasons as above
Perform minor acts of elemental generation/manipulation, primarily summarized/limited to 'immediate contact/proximity'
Sense Sasume's current condition, physical and/or mental
Imitate behavior, expressions, and emotions—especially Sasume's
V. BEHAVIOR
Sasume's 'familiars', while not independent from Sasume in any way, shape, or form, can have 'unique' behaviors that can give the illusion of autonomy. Thus, their 'behavior' can be lumped into three categories:
Direct control
Indirect control
Unconscious direction
Direct control is, as the name suggests, when Sasume is intentionally controlling their behavior— as she might control raw elements. In this way, direct control is different from standard elemental manipulation in all but aesthetics.
Indirect control is when the familiars have 'creative freedom' in the exact execution of how to follow through on 'orders' they've been given. These include familiars who have gone outside of Sasume's senses, Shinrei's range on Sasume's abilities, and/or when her attention has gone away from them (even when in range).
Unconscious direction is 'indirect control, but moreso', and is called such not because they are following Sasume's orders unconsciously, but because they are acting on Sasume's unconscious mind and feelings. While this may overlap with indirect control, such as showing trepidation towards an enemy, this may also reflect emotions she may try to keep hidden in the day to day (such as apologeticness after a fight, or earnest affections and attention).
E.g.: an ice wolf being directly controlled to herd sheep will follow Sasume's 'mind's eye' to a T. If she were to head inside for some tea they would revert to indirect control and herd 'freely', while her unconscious direction may prompt them to try and groom or cuddle baby sheep (due to Sasume being fond of animals and doubly protective and endeared towards the young ones, not because of the familiar having an 'internal' personality or the like).

THE 'HYPOCRISY' OF LOYALTY
ON: SASUME'S INTERSECTION OF LOVE VS LOYALTY VS MORALITY
(AND, HER PROPENSITY FOR 'KNIGHT'/'DRAGON' ROLES)
Much of Sasume's base behaviors and mindset comes from her upbringing—a street rat and orphan who was ostracized at best by those in her hometown. Setting aside the resulting trauma (for the most part), such an upbringing set the stage for her morality and relationships, as well as relationships with morality itself.
Firstly, this impacts her pride. Yes, internally, but also externally: she ranges from crippling insecurity and discomfort to outright aggression when it comes to those of higher classes and/or positions of power (and/or 'formal' contexts).
Combined, this sets the stage for her boundless compassion and staunch sense of justice—not simply kindness for kindness's sake (although it certainly is that, too), but as active rebellion against such a cruel world that harms its people. Hence, her default support of those most vulnerable is paired with a default defensiveness against those with power (and thus power to exploit the former).
However,
Nothing effects her point of view as much as her loyalty. It may be earned justly to match her own morality (such as being a compassionate, or similarly loyal, or valuing true justice/equality), but... it may also be earned simply for treating Sasume correctly.
Not 'correctly' as in 'kindly' or even 'morally,' but as in simply giving her 'just enough' to inspire loyalty. Whether it's giving her mercy after being the one to threaten her, or generosity after depriving her, or simply sheer attrition and proximity (even with extreme starting animosity), or sheer chance, it is not hard to earn her favor.
Not because she is gullible, but because of the core issue of her childhood: isolation.
Sasume, at her core, is lonely and she is alone, and no matter how much she may insist otherwise or have grown accustomed to it, she is desparate to be otherwise. Combined with her difficulty in letting people in, as well as how impersonable she is to strangers, and she is wont to quickly and staunchly become attached to those willing to become 'attached' to her (however reciprocated it may, or may not, be).
And once her loyalty is won it is very, very hard to persuade her otherwise. The more intense the loyalty, the more unshakeable her faith. It may be hard to gauge or appreciate it overall, but the peak of it is clear: not just asking if she's loyal, but asking for her loyalty itself.
She might give a more mixed response, yes, but she may also not. May not just give but swear her (entire) loyalty to them. Ownership of her loyalty. Unquestioningly, irrevocably, evermore.
While her loyalty may, unsurprisingly, come with things like admiration, respect, and affection, it does not require an absence of things like scorn or condemnation.
Such 'contradictions' may be a given in interpersonal relationships, but in the right (or wrong) hands this can be taken to extremes.
She can overlook or outright enable cruelties, or even enact them for the other. She may not like, may treat it as inevitable but unfortunate as needing to use her violence onto others, but she can and she will if need be.
Not only does her loyalty supersede all, allowing her to sacrifice her own morality, but also to sacrifice herself. Whether its exploitation, her raw destructive power, or simple disposability, she is willing to suffer damn near anything for those who have her loyalty, her love.
Because, in the end, that is the crux of it: those she loves have her loyalty, and those who have her loyalty have her love.
And in such a cruel and lonely world, how can anything else be more important than that?
Author's Note: While novels may have stories that have fixed characters with fixed decisions and fixed consequences, set in stone especially in the writer(s)'s eyes, roleplay is a collaborative and continuous form of storytelling.
Thusly, the relationship between Sasume's love and loyalty and her morality can have any number of outcomes. Perhaps it could entail her becoming corrupted, a villain's Dragon, or perhaps it could have her swearing her undying loyalty to one that may be called a hero.
On the other end, mayhaps she's a genuine friend, or perhaps a mere pawn that's been carefully manipulated into giving away her everything. Perhaps she inspires them to do better (potentially to the point of a redemption arc), or perhaps her compassion and selflessness inspires resentment for her 'idiocy'.
Maybe it's a combination of a number of these things, mixed and molded together, or maybe it's a rollercoaster of completely different things on a single path.
They only way to know for sure is to try and see. :)

She barely notices when the shitshow starts, reflexively turning her steeled gaze to it when it reaches the point where she needs to intervene. Sweeps the first's legs out from under them, yanking the back of their shirt along with the second's to half shove them to the ground, half keep them from cracking their head open falling. Slips around the third, blocks a blow from the fourth with her forearm, and shoves an elbow into the fifth's solar plexus.
Snaps an arm back when the first (second?) tries to ambush her pathetically, yanking their arm behind their back and shoving them onto the tabletop—
The second (third?) beats off the last 'cohort' still standing and—
Sasume lets the knife pierce through her hand, crushing theirs in hers as if they haven't— technically succeeded, actually failed— pinned her hand to her own shoulder. She pushes their hand back as if unhurt, staring them down with an unflinching gaze.
One step.
Two steps.
They try and fail to get their hand, or even their knife, free, sweat quickly pouring down their face.
It only takes a few moments more to throw the bastards out like overgrown sacks of flour and return to actual spot.
It takes a moment to notice the gaze pinned on her like another knife. She seems to ignore it at first, briefly closing her eyes to freeze her wounds shut as she rends the blade with little more than a tightened jaw. Wipes it clean before flipping it around, blade balanced between her fingers and offering the handle to the other.
"Want it?"
