A non-slippery and familiar mat can provide more stability and grip on the exam table to make it more comfortable. 4. puppy training ≠ obedience training Puppy training classes should include: 🔹puppy parent education 🔹proper and safe socialization opportunities 🔹force free training 🔹nurturing human-animal bond Puppy parent education: Knowledge for taking care of a different species is not supposed to be "common sense". It is perfectly normal (and encouraged) to look for a qualified help to make our dog happy. Proper and safe socialization opportunities: The window of opportunity for puppy socialization may close at around 16 weeks. But socialization should continue into adulthood to prevent regression. Puppy classes usually run for 5 or 6 weeks during which puppy parents are equipped with knowledge to continue socialization and training outside of class. Force free training: Starting at around 8 weeks old, puppies already have the capacity to learn. We can absolutely start training them. But, make sure to do it safely and kindly by not using fear, pain, aversive, or intimidation to teach. Dogs deserve to learn without the fear of pain or intimidation. Nurturing human-animal bond: Training should open a two-way communication. Not a "do as I say" type of relationship. To quote Zazie Todd, PhD (@zazietodd), "In general terms, when we provide dogs with what they need, it means they have good welfare and they are happy. When dogs have what they need, they are less likely to have behaviour issues, and they are more likely to have a good relationship with us. Do you want to utilize food to train your dog (or cat) but have been hearing conflicting things? The truth about training using food: 🔹It doesn't make your pet fat. Overfeeding does. If your pet is having weight issues, please see your vet. 🔸It doesn't teach your pet to beg. Reinforcing "begging" behavior does. 🔹It doesn't spoil your dog or cat. Whatever "spoil" means. How do you define "spoiled"? Evaluate if the "spoiled" behavior is being reinforced in some way. 🔸Human food doesn't cause them to steal food. Being careless of where we put our food does. For pet-safe list, see ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. 🔹Food is a primary reinforcer, which means it doesn't need a conditioning process to be a reinforcer. But remember, each animal is an individual. They will have preference. One type of food may be more reinforcing than others to different individuals. It's a personal preference. Small dogs are notorious for being handled willy-nilly just because they are small and easy to overpower. Some are just too cute we can't help ourselves. So let's help ourselves. Many will develop an aversion towards being approached or handled and may resort to using aggressive behaviors to warn us off. To prevent small dogs feeling the need to fight for their comfort, there are some things we can do. I could also argue these suggestions are applicable for dogs of all sizes and breeds. Special considerations for small dogs: Teach them "lift off". 🔹Teach a behavior that will lead to them being picked up, e.g. front paws on your legs or stand on a platform, etc. 🔹Teach a cue that means they are going to be picked up., e.g. cue "lift off", etc. 🔹Always give a heads up before picking them up. 🔹Be predictable. 🔹Ensure how you hold them doesn't cause discomfort. Give them control over their sense of safety. 🔸Invite, rather than approach. 🔸Pairing your approach with good things to create positive association. 🔸Always listen to their response to you. 🔸Never force them to do anything. If you must, always use something least stressful first. Always check for consent through body language. 🔹Learn canine body language, especially of fear and stress. 🔹Learn your own dog's signs based on shape and body conformation. 🔹Any change in body language needs to be reassessed whether or not they want to continue interacting with you. Struggling during handling/restraint means stop, take a step back, & evaluate. 🔸Learn how to handle and restrain properly (low-stress). 🔸Practice cooperative care and husbandry training. 🔸Learn the proper desensitization and counterconditioning. 🔸Keep training duration of being picked up or restrained short. 🔸Wriggling? Session's too long. 🔸Listen to their "no" so you'll get more "yes" as they build trust. One more important note: A growling small dog is not something to laugh about or to be recorded for a "funny video". This dog is not trying to be defiant. Upon graduation, I became a zoo animal care keeper intern and learned about cooperative husbandry care and clicker training. I went on to work at an animal welfare organization in my home country, Indonesia. It was then I realized the importance of pet parent education in reducing dogs and cats abandonment and relinquishment to shelters or the streets. After volunteering at a wildlife facility in Tasikoki Sulawesi, I pursued dog training.  Unfortunately, the dog training culture in Indonesia is still ridden with punishment and outdated myths. I came across Karen Pryor Academy and registered in their Dog Trainer Foundations. It connected me to more courses, webinars, and conferences I could attend and to other trainers with similar training philosophies. In 2019, I founded Furry Pawsitive. I mostly work with dogs and their owners, but I especially love encouraging children who are curious about their family dogs or cats to observe or to participate. I teach private and group classes in the Cibubur area (Bogor and Jakarta) and online lessons outside of the area. I am an instructor for Puppy Start Right Preschool (including its online hybrid option). I encourage clients to focus on cooperative husbandry training for daily life to reduce pet stress in preparation for a salon or the vet. For pet groomers and veterinary professionals, I teach the foundations of behavior and focusing on low-stress handling and fear-free principles. Is it urination or spraying? 🐱 URINATION (or PEEING) ▶Cat is emptying his bladder. ▶Cat is in a squatting position. ▶Cats pee on a horizontal surface, such as a litter box, carpet, rug, grass, etc. ▶If a litter box is provided, cats will choose to use it. ▶If a cat is refusing to use a litter box, evaluate if the litter box is to his liking (see our litter box post). SPRAYING ▶Spraying is a form of scent marking (i.e. urine marking). ▶To mark their territory. ▶Cats ready for mating will also do this. ▶Conflict between cats (indoor/outdoor) ▶Stressed or insecure cats will likely do this to make the surrounding environment smell familiar to them. ▶Spraying is done in a standing position, tail lifted straight up and may quiver. ▶Cats mark on a vertical surface, such as trees, walls, the sides of furnitures. ▶Male and female cats can spray. ▶This is not a litter box issue.
