everyone talks about the graceland too / favor / please stay trilogy, which is definitely an amazing group. but y'know what at the end of the day it's the chinese satellite / rejoice / vbs trilogy for me.

to me it's really interesting to hear the difference in the three of their approaches to religion. they each have their distinct beliefs and i think that spirituality, even the lack thereof, is a very beautiful and personal thing to think about. i love hearing artists write about their own experiences because no matter what i hear the stories and they resonate.

hannibal initially tried to saw will's head open as a confession of love, since his violence and love was so deeply intertwined, it was the only way he could express it. words could never be enough. the last person he loved he ate, so it made sense to eat will, too. but i don't think hannibal was really prepared to lose will. i think if nothing stopped him and he did kill will, it would be something different than just love. he'd eat to mourn, to grieve, to cope, to keep will close, a part of him. maybe to even protect him from anyone else who wished him harm, for only hannibal's love and violence was worthy. hannibal would break his own heart because of his wordless confession, one will would never be able to hear, only the sound of the bonesaw reverberating his skull. and hannibal would be doomed to dine alone. no longer out of a pure love he didn't have words for, but now a loss he could never undo. the idea of will would last so much longer than his taste ever could, and his memory would smell of copper and feel like the distinct give of flesh between teeth. and no matter how hard hannibal tried, it would be a hunger he could never sate.
