How do you think would Frieda would feel if Historia inherited the power of the Founding Titan and the will of the first king?
Bad.
Frieda starts out her Founding Titan journey confident and smiling. Some of Historia’s strongest memories of Frieda are of her screaming and in tears. The happiness they share together brings their love for each other to life, but it’s Frieda’s trauma that helps push Historia into wanting to be her own person.
Frieda’s life is not fun.
As harmful as some of the messages she ends up imparting to Historia are, it’s done out of trying to be a good big sister. She helps Historia with her reading, rides horses with her, tosses her up in the air…
HIstoria isn’t someone Frieda looks at as a successor, I don’t think. It’s hard to turn off the fanfic part of my brain that asks about what if, because Historia’s the only person with royal blood Frieda knows who isn’t raised knowing their family’s fate and Frieda’s young enough that I could see her noticing that and wondering/hoping–but I don’t think you break down in tears in front of your baby sister without understanding that you’re fucked up.
We’ll never know how Frieda would have handled passing on the Founding Titan, but her experience could not be more different from Uri’s. Uri was like a chill hippie king with enough sparkly eyes to land himself a serial killer boy toy. He accepts killing his father and his own death with a smile. Kenny doesn’t think to consider him a slave to his place in the world until he’s at death’s door.
Rod and Uri argue over who will kill their father.
When it’s Frieda’s turn, she cries.
I think she comes to terms with inheriting the Founding Titan at some point. She’s casual enough in using its power with Historia, and puts on a very stable front.
But the burden of the Founding Titan for her is not the burden of creating a paradise. The closest we get to her talking about her role in everything is telling her kid sister what kind of person she should try to be, and she lists off some very admirable traits. Historia’s life warps them, but the qualities of this hypothetical good person really are good.
What we see of Frieda, through Historia’s eyes, is sunshine and rainbows with her family, and pure trauma in relation to nearly all things Founding Titan. It’s an incomplete picture, but until a thorough journey into Eren’s head, the best one we’re getting.
I don’t think Frieda wants anyone to take on the Founding Titan. She might recognize the benefits of choosing someone over letting it happen randomly, but I don’t think, given a real choice, she would ever want to pass the damn thing on. Especially not to her siblings. She makes a some questionable decisions regarding Historia’s memories, but she loves her. I don’t think there is a world where she would ever want Historia inheriting the Founding Titan.
She seems like a glass-half-full type of person, so if Historia got landed with it, I think she’d still have a smile for her sister, but I don’t think it’s something she could be happy about.
Thanks for the ask!

I have to confess that I find Grisha very attractive. I’m a horrible person, but I ship him with my beloved Frieda SO MUCH. They’re such a perfect dramatic pair, a romance doomed to end in tragedy uwu

Queen of peace
I was looking for info about Norse Goddess Freya for my previous post, when I noticed one interesting thing about the name Frieda:
A short form of the Germanic Friedelinde (gentle peace) and Friederike (ruler of peace). Nicknames for Frieda: Fritzi
In fact, the name Fritz has the same meaning as Frieda, i.e. “peaceful ruler"/”ruler of peace”.  Besides, consider this:
Freya means “The Lady”.
Freyja, “Lady,” is a title rather than a true name. It’s a cognate of the modern German word Frau, which is used in much the same way as the English title “Mrs.”
Frieda uses “Christa” (Ymir Fritz) as an example to show little Historia what being ladylike means:
Tumblr media
...and this:
Freya is the archetype of the völva, a professional or semiprofessional practitioner of seidr, the most organized form of Norse magic. It was she who first brought this art to the gods, and, by extension, to humans as well.
Tumblr media
So...maybe Frieda’s name is just a wink at the Reiss family real surname, or maybe Isayama took inspiration from both Ymir and Freya to create Ymir Fritz. But what if -  and this is totally just wishful thinking on my part - there’s more to Frieda Reiss than what we’ve discovered so far?

Goddess
Freya (Old Norse Freyja, “Lady”) is one of the preeminent goddesses in Norse mythology. [...]  Famous for her fondness of love, fertility, beauty, and fine material possessions, Freya is the archetype of the völva, a professional or semiprofessional practitioner of seidr, the most organized form of Norse magic. It was she who first brought this art to the gods, and, by extension, to humans as well. Given her expertise in controlling and manipulating the desires, health, and prosperity of others, she’s a being whose knowledge and power are almost without equal.

Episode 45
This was probably the weakest entry of the season so far, which is a shame considering that, at least on paper, the changes they made this time around could have been a minor improvement over the manga, making this episode a perfect setup for the next one.
The writers made some poor decisions that greatly affected Historia’s character arc. Firstly, there’s still no mention of Frieda’s self-hatred; hatred for not being able to save humanity due to the first King’s ideology having complete control over her, to the point that it drove her insane at times:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By removing this from the anime, how much impact did Frieda really have on Historia when we look back? Sure, when she finds out that the only person who ever loved her when she was a child was killed by Grisha, she considers to kill Eren. But then what? In the manga, remembering her sister’s suffering and self-loathing was one of the reasons why she decided to save Eren, who was going through a similar kind of pain. Not to mention Historia wanted to be like Frieda, i.e. the one who made her feel like she was loved and needed by someone, even though Frieda didn’t want Historia to be like her.
Tumblr media
That’s why this line is so powerful:
Tumblr media
“When I see someone crying, saying no one needs them… I want to tell them it’s not true“
In the manga, her words have much more weight to them because she’s not remembering just Ymir, she’s also remembering Frieda. But in the anime, the impact Frieda had on Historia’s growth as a person is gone, and it ends up feeling like she was only needed for plot exposition.
Then we have this scene near the end:
Tumblr media
Let me be as clear as possible: I love the idea of Mikasa being the one who tells Historia to punch Levi, not just because it’s a cute moment between the two, but because it makes perfect sense for Mikasa to be the one to suggest it, since she used to have some beef with Levi:
Tumblr media
However, why would Historia want to punch Levi in the anime? What exactly does he do to her to deserve it? In the manga, he physically threatens her to succeed the throne, but in the anime… he’s actually pretty nice about it. “We need you to become Queen” and that’s it. Heck, when Historia requests to take part in the battle, he complies without resistance. So when the time comes and Historia punches Levi in the anime… it’s not gonna make much sense.
And finally, what bothered me the most about this episode:
Tumblr media
Spelling out the conflict and messages for the audience. It starts with Connie and Jean:
“By leaving her father, she finally broke free from that burden.”
“Historia broke free from the Reiss family and has finally found herself.”
Again, I like the idea of the 104th kids showing concern for Historia, but these lines are so forced and unnecessary that they are outright talking down to the audience and spelling out the resolution to Historia’s conflict. And that’s nothing compared to what comes next:
“My next duty is to be Queen, right? Understood. But whether or not it’s forced on me is up to me to decide.“
Thanks for pointing that out, writers. We wouldn’t have been able to follow Historia’s character arc otherwise.
Overall, I was pretty disappointed with this episode. It’s not like they are ruining Historia’s arc or anything; it’s just not as great as it was in the manga.

When Historia was a child, and Frieda visited her and regularly erased her memories, did Frieda tell Historia that she's her half-sister? Historia seemed surprised/confused when Rod tells her Frieda's name and their blood relation, but it's hard to imagine Frieda didn't. Also, do we ever hear what Historia thinks about Frieda post-rejecting her father?
I’m not sure. She calls Frieda “Sis,” but I’m guessing that’s a translation of some manner of onee-. Historia has her memories returned all at once, so it wouldn’t be surprising if she missed out on some of the finer details of identity. She also doesn’t refer to Frieda by name before Rod pops up with it.
Some of that is obviously to keep her hidden from the audience, but we don’t really get a clear view of how well she and Frieda know each other, and what we know about Historia suggests the personality of a child who would definitely get into a stranger’s van for candy.
Essentially, canon shrugs at it all, and if Frieda wanted to keep who she was a secret, it would have worked. Because Historia’s like five and traumatically alone.
My personal inclination is to assume Frieda doesn’t share her identity with Historia. I think it’s one thing to erase her memories of each meeting, but considering her age and how kind of terrible she is about the meetings to start out… I’m not sure Frieda could bear her little sister forgetting that they were sisters. Maybe that’s me being overly sentimental, but Frieda’s a kid, and she loves Historia. Walking away is hard enough without answering questions about why Frieda gets to live with parents and Historia doesn’t. Being a random stranger and winning Historia’s adoration that way is less painful for everyone.
We don’t hear much from Historia at all after she claims her throne. What we do have is one memory of Frieda during the assembly meeting where Eren takes up lying to people. She remembers her sister in tears by the fence.
It isn’t much, but the image and Historia’s expression suggest that patricide hasn’t diminished her love for her sister.
Historia knows what it’s like to be pushed into a role you don’t know how to handle. She has a lot of happy memories with her sister, but now that she’s gone, and their family’s true legacy is coming out, I think what sticks with her is how much her sister suffered.
Thank you for the ask!

Again, bees/wasps.
We see them in Eren’s dream, then in s2 ending and now in the book Frieda used to read to Historia. What is their meaning? Will they appear in manga too sooner or later?
The mysteries increase…
(for a theory about the possible meaning of bees and wasps in snk: https://the-not-so-dark-age.tumblr.com/post/173024311914/an-eternal-struggle-past-and-future-of-eldia )
