It’s been a while since I’ve posted here, but I figured this would be the best place to document my newest adventure in riding- riding and training Paso Finos.
Currently, I’m working with Vulcano (4 yr old bay gelding) and Cortana (5 year old grey mare) to get them ready to show at a Paso Fino Championship qualifier in 3 weeks!
I’m not sure how interesting this will be to many people, but oh well!
Day 1: It took 20 minutes to catch Vulcano in his pasture that he shares with a miniature horse stallion. After catching him, his “friend” reared up and bit him on the face, spooking him and causing him to give me rope burn from the lead rope. Then, when riding, he spooked at someone sitting on the fence and we spent 20 minutes doing circles to finally get him to chill out.
Day 2: Only took 5 minutes to catch Vulcano, but this time the stallion tried to mount him as I was leading him to the gate. Vulcano didn’t kick him, but did try to run through the gate as fast as possible to get away from it. Tacked him up and rode Cortana in the round pen while Ashlee (Cortana’s owner) kindly held him for me and gave me some advice on a slightly more trained horse. Hopped off and rode Vulcano, working on relaxing and flexing his neck after doing some lunge work and desensitization.
Day 3: Took a few minutes and some determination to catch Vulcano, but the stallion wasn’t as interested in him today. Walked calmly to the barn, tacked up quietly, worked on some desensitization before hopping on. Then we spooked at a log pile and went back to circles and realizing things aren’t going to eat us. Chilled out and got through the work-out (walk, corto, largo, and canter both ways) with less stiffness than yesterday. Then we spooked at a fly spray bottle getting blown onto the ground by the wind. Hosed him off and took him back out to his pasture where he finally told the stallion to back off. More lunging and desensitization tomorrow!
