I never really thought of them together but honestly, I'm digging it now after reading through some of your posts.
I always envisioned Chris as clueless about his feelings for another person until it's too late, or if he is aware he's convinced himself it's pointless to try and pursue a relationship. Which, given his profession, makes sense why he's hesitant to pursue anything when his life is on the line and so many people he's cared about has been kidnapped, experimented on, or killed.
Leon on the other hand I always personally viewed him as always aware of his feelings but never willing to pursue anything that could even potentially be a long-term relationship. Not only could he die at any moment, and so many people he cared about were kidnapped, experimented on, or killed, but anyone he even tries to have a relationship with will have a target on their back and will be used against him.
Personally, the way I see it, Chreon seems like an ultimate angsty hurt/comfort slow-burn pair that challenges each other and pushes each other to try harder, not only for each other but for themselves. Once they get over the hurdle of not wanting to bring danger to the other or worrying about dying on a mission and leaving the other heartbroken, they're unstoppable.
Yeah that's how I see it too. I think it would take Chris a while to realize that the feeling he's feeling is love-- let alone acting on that because, like you mentioned, there's all kinds of factors like his job, the potential for him to die in the field, etc. and he didn't want to put that on someone else. And on Leon's end, I think he'd know he was in love and still continue to stay close to Chris, but he wouldn't saying anything about the "being in love" aspect because he didn't want to potentially ruin their friendship. Both of them are emotionally constipated in their own ways, but they push each other like you said, and they have a beautiful relationship. It also helps that they're canonically foils for each other, so we get the whole opposites attract thing too!
Hehehe but I'm glad I could see you on the chreon gospel. Welcome to the chreon sector of the fandom, we have "old" man yaoi.

I'm not sure I've seen you talk about this, although I'm sure you have because of how often you talk about Vendetta, but Chris' opening scene in that movie is just... Wooo it makes me sad.
Right so like, starting off, we already have some guy from what I'm assuming is a government organization or the military from Mexico just like making fun of him and what he does. Then Chris has to explain that all of the people in that helicopter have to be prepared to kill their friends or families at some point if they ever got infected, which probably already brings up some traumatic memories for him seeing as he has lost many friends and comrades to bioterrorism.
But the main thing I'm so distressed about is that the place where Arias was hiding out is just... So incredibly similar to the Spencer Mansion. I had to pause and just look at some of the shots of the place and the area around it to make sure I wasn't going insane, but it's definitely supposed to be like a reference to it or something.
I'm assuming that already put Chris way more on edge than he would have been seeing as that was the (if I remember correctly) first place he had ever really encountered BOWs and lost practically his entire team. And then he actually loses his entire team on this mission plus not saving the people he was supposed to save. I guarantee you he was fighting some sort of response that entire time and had like a panic attack when he was alone.
Also apologies if this is kind of all over the place and badly articulated. It's hard for me to get these kinds of observations into words sometimes.
Everyone talks about Leon's trauma from racoon city, and a lot of it is often mirrored or referenced in other games and movies, but, at least within the community, I don't really see people talk about Chris' trauma from it.
Mini Vendetta!Chris Analysis
TW// brief mention of a suicide statistic, talk of trauma, ptsd, and other mental health topics
Sorry this took me a minute to get to 'cause I sorta went a little overboard but I just asdhsd I really love Vendetta for this reason and I'm passionate about this topic.
I feel like a lot of people overlook Chris' trauma just based on his appearance and how it presents. Generally speaking, men are more 3-5x more likely to be "successful" with suicide attempts since they're less likely to get help or reach out to anyone. Part of this is how men with mental health issues are treated in society, especially in America. Mental health is seen as a "women" thing by a lot of people, which means men are less likely to seek help because society has conditioned them not to, lest they sacrifice their masculinity. And with Chris, he's pretty much patron saint of masculinity in the franchise. He's a very stereotypically masculine man, so just like in real life, a lot of people have the tendency to overlook his mental health because of this idea that mental health goes against this hegemonic masculinity.
But when looking at Chris in Vendetta, the novel actually provides even more details! Important context for talking about the following scenes on the chopper and when they go to the mansion is that this isn't just a regular mission for Chris. They're here trying to track down Cathy White, one of Chris' friends and fellow BSAA operative, but more on that in a minute.
When this scene starts, Chris is kinda in his own little world trying to mentally prepare himself for the mission. The team he's with is Mexico's special forces unit, and Chris was sent by the BSAA to be an advisor for the mission, which is something Chris doesn't take lightly because he's responsible for this team, even though he doesn't start out in charge. He methodically checks his weapon and gear, and then one of the men sorta teases him and dangles the "bet you killed a lot, huh?" which is like... the worst thing he could've said to Chris specifically. And at first, Chris doesn't even want to really look at the guy.
Tumblr media
And then he proceeded to explain in no uncertain details what happens, both physically and emotionally, if everything goes to shit and someone the guy cares about is infected. And hot take, but I feel like this was warranted because although the guy might not have known that Chris has trauma with the team dying thing, he does start out by sorta mocking Chris.
The "Doesn't sound very heroic, does it?" really sticks out to me because this isn't something the fandom really brings up often, but even though Chris is willingly with the BSAA, he doesn't feel good about killing the zombies, he doesn't want to have to kill people he knows they might've been able to cure, but that's what he has to do. Also let's talk about the Chris and heroism theme and how they literally named the DLC "Not a Hero"-- But interestingly enough, the "you did what you had to do" sentiment is the same thing he tells Leon later on in the story.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, the guy recognized that he fucked up a little bit and apologized, to which Chris nods.
Tumblr media
The mansion was actually specifically designed to look like the Spencer Mansion too, and when Chris first sees it, he's brought back to that incident-- which just makes this whole situation even worse. The novel goes into more detail about it, showing that Chris had stare at the mansion and pick apart the differences before he could move on.
Tumblr media
And as the mission progresses, it starts to become more and more similar to the Spencer Mansion incident, but the real kicker is Chris' connection to Kathy, which is the namesake of the movie.
Tumblr media
The toy car isn't just a toy car, and Cathy wasn't just some agent Chris worked with. Time and time again we're told that Chris sees his team as family and that he cares for all of them very deeply. Chris gave that toy car to Cathy's kids, whom he seemed to have been a few times before. He was friends with Cathy outside of work too, and now only only has half the team Chris was supposed to be responsible for dead and zombified, but the person Chris had come to save is dead, and not only Cathy, but her kids too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Chris hesitates, because now he knows he's going to have to kill a child, and it's personal. Once again, we get a bit more detail in the novel, but in the end Chris isn't able to shoot Zack, so he uses the grenade instead. (Fun fact: Capcom originally didn't want to do this scene because they didn't want to kill children, but the director really fought for it, so Capcom caved.)
And that is why the movie is called Vendetta, but this is the moment that solidified Chris' personal vendetta against Arias. Not only was Arias dealing with BOWs, which Chris was used to, but now Arias has taken someone from his family and her children too on top of his team.
So while Leon's trauma is more "obvious" in the film, it's important to understand and recognize Chris' as well since it's quite literally the reason the movie is called Vendetta. And if we take the chreon approach, this has a lot to do with the "bar scene" between them as well because both of them are having a really shitty time, Leon is drunk, and Chris isn't good with words, but they manage to get it together in the end when Leon understand this is personal for Chris (and they're friends, so he's going to help him) and Chris realizes that yelling at Leon isn't productive, so he talks to him and tries to comfort him instead (which they cut out of the movie for whatever reason).
But yeah! If you want more details on the VD!Chris stuff, I highly recommend checking out the novel, my English translation is linked on the pinned post of the blog!
