Top 10 trending phones of week 2

Week 2 of 2020 saw the entrance of the first Samsung "Lite" phones in years in our trending chart. The Galaxy S10 Lite fared better and went third, while the Note10 Lite ended up two spots lower. On top we have the Redmi Note 8 Pro in front of the Galaxy A51, while the Redmi Note 8 has lost a spot and is now splitting the two new Samsung entries. In sixth we see the Xperia 5 Plus - it's not often that a Sony phone makes the top 10 these days, much less an unofficial one, but this one might be the start of the turnaround for the Japanese company. Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro has only lost a position and is now seventh despite the influx of hot new hardware. Behind it we have the Samsung Galaxy A71 and Galaxy A50, while the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max completes the list. That means we lose the Oppo Reno3 Pro, the Realme X50 5G and the Samsung Galaxy A70.

Xiaomi's upcoming Black Shark 3 5G could be the first phone with 16GB RAM

With the success of the previous Xiaomi Black Sharks, the company is bound to release a follow-up and this time, it's going to be called Black Shark 3 5G. It has already been certified by the MIIT so there's no doubt about it.

However, having 5G connectivity won't be the only future-proof feature. According to recent rumors, the handset will be the first smartphone to make use of 16GB of RAM. Some may say this is unnecessary, but other power users will appreciate the extra memory. Especially if proper memory management is introduced and you plan to hold onto the phone for years to come. Xiaomi Mi Band 5 to offer contactless payments outside of China for the first time

The Xiaomi Mi Band 5 could be the first fitness tracker from the company to offer contactless payment support outside of China, according to a new leak. In the last two iterations of the Mi Band, Xiaomi has only supported contactless payments in its home territory of China, though a report from TizenHelp indicates things may be changing for the upcoming tracker. Related reading: Best budget fitness trackers in 2020We don't yet have any concrete indications when the Mi Band 5 will hit shelves (though previous launches would point towards a Q2 announcement), but, if the report is to be believed, it appears Xiaomi will introduce a long-awaited feature for the first time. What isn't confirmed is just how Xiaomi plans to do so - whether it would expand its Mi Pay service or open up a global version of the tracker to work with other platforms, such as Google Pay. Interestingly, though, a different approach to contactless payments isn't the only thing hinted in the latest leak, with a larger display also suggested for the Mi Band 5. Instead of the 0.95-inch display that featured on the Mi Band 4, it appears we could be set for a much bigger screen in the next generation - one measuring a full 1.2-inches. With that larger screen will also come better resolution, with the tracker set to be easier to read in direct sunlight than previous devices, it's said. As ever, though, it's important to sprinkle a touch of scepticism upon any leak. While these are two very plausible potential features for the next Mi Band, there's nothing outside of unknown source information to suggest this is actually happening. Weekly poll: can the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Note10 Lite make your wallet lighter?

The Galaxy S10 Lite and Note10 Lite are a chance for Samsung to presents its flagship lineup from a different vantage point. These “lite” models are not significantly cheaper than the phones they are named after, but they do bring a different set of features. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite boasts a 48MP main camera on its back with Super Steady OIS, which should outdo even the top S10 model. And it comes with the same Snapdragon 855 chipset, so there’s nothing “lite” about its performance. You might be tempted to compare it to the Galaxy S10e, but that phone is significantly smaller and it’s actually cheaper. Speaking of size, the screen on the S10 Lite is actually bigger than that of the Galaxy S10+, even if it’s not as sharp (1080p+ vs. 1440p+). But with the larger size comes more battery capacity too, 4,500mAh, though its charging capabilities have been pared down (e.g. wireless charging is not supported in either direction).

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite The Galaxy S10 Lite features a dedicated 5MP macro camera, but it lacks a telephoto lens – instead you’ll have to rely on digital zoom from the high-resolution main sensor. We’ll have to compare them to say for certain, but 2x zoom like the S10 and S10+ have are typically quite achievable digitally with a 48MP sensor. The one thing that might stop early adopters is price – the S10 Lite launches at a hefty €650 and you can easily find a Galaxy S10 for that much or a bit less. However, the prices of Galaxy phones tend to slide down a bit in the months after they go on sale. The Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite got the fully-featured S Pen with Air Command motion gestures, so you’re getting the premium experience. Also, the 6.7” screen is halfway between the Note10 and Note10+ in terms of size, so you’ll have a large canvas to work on. The triple 12MP camera on the back does feature a telephoto lens (2x), bringing it closer to the capabilities of the full-fat Note10. Both the Galaxy Note10 Lite and S10 Lite feature a 32MP selfie camera, compared to the 10MP cameras of the non-Lite models.

Samsung Galaxy Note10 Lite The Galaxy Note10 Lite is powered by the older Exynos 9810 chipset that was used in the Note9. That chip is still pretty fast, though it’s worth pointing out that when it comes to the Lite models, the S-phone is more premium than the Note (usually, the opposite is true). The launch price is €600, a good €100 below the current cost of a non-plus Galaxy Note10. Going for the Note9 won’t save you money, but it will cost you the ultra wide camera and the more advanced S Pen. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Note10 Lite will go on sale before the end of this quarter (i.e. before the end of March). Will you be lining up to buy one? Google reportedly testing Stadia streaming on non-Pixel Android smartphones- Technology News, Firstpost

Since Stadia has launched only as a paid service, only subscribers were able to receive access. The Stadia mobile app displayed the option of “This screen” instead of “Choose where to play” which means that they can play the game on that particular device. Users were able to start a game in Stadia while connected over Wi-Fi after connecting the Stadia controller. The report states the access would end after one single session. It appears like Google is doing early tests to see how well does Stadia work on other Android devices. It’s clear that the company won’t keep the service restricted to only Pixel devices and open it up to the other mobile devices in the future. Based on the devices it was reported to be working on, it indicates that Google is trying to make the service work on older generation devices as well. OnePlus 8 5G to be sold by Verizon

OnePlus' next carrier partner in the US is going to be Verizon, according to a new rumor purportedly originating at a "source familiar with the companies' plans". So far, OnePlus has only partnered with T-Mobile in the States. That gave consumers an alternative to buying unlocked straight from the Chinese company's website. The OnePlus 8 is the phone that Verizon will sell, with 5G on board. This likely means that it will pack support for the carrier's fast but small mmWave network. It's unclear if Verizon will offer the OnePlus 8 Pro as well.

OnePlus 7T, the OnePlus 8's predecessor This is the first time Verizon would be selling a OnePlus handset, although recent OnePlus smartphones have been compatible with the carrier's network - you just needed to buy unlocked and then bring it to Big Red. The OnePlus 8 sold by Verizon will come with the carrier's usual suite of bloatware: pre-loaded apps and features, but also useful stuff like support for Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE. Apple begins battery replacement program for iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max Smart Battery Case

Apple has launched a new battery replacement programs for some models of its Smart Battery Case. The program covers models for 2018 iPhones including the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max that are experiencing issues with charging.

Affected Smart Battery Cases have one of two issues: The Case’s battery may not be charging or charging intermittently or, the Case doesn’t charge the iPhone or charges it intermittently. This applies to Cases produced between January 2019 and October 2019 and those with cases that meet the criteria are eligible for a free replacement. Xiaomi teases MIUI 12, may arrive in Q3 2020

Chinese phone maker Xiaomi today teased MIUI 12 - the next version of its custom Android skin and successor to MIUI 11. The company didn't reveal anything about MIUI 12, other than sharing an image on Chinese social network Weibo with its logo.

MIUI 11 was announced last September and its global stable ROM began rolling out in October, so we expect the MIUI 12 to arrive during the same period. MIUI 11 brought along system-wide dark mode, improved always-on display, and Mi Lan Pro system font. It also came with new animations, wallpapers and themes, and the company also announced Mi Go Travel suite to help you with booking tickets for different modes of travel. What MIUI 12 will bring in and how big an upgrade it will be over its predecessor remains to be seen, but more information about it is likely to surface in the coming weeks or months. If all goes well, the total number of iPhone sales since 2007 should sit at approximately 1.9 billion units.
