3D Modelling
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as physically making my project I also need to look more into 3D modelling as it I will be a skill that I will learn in later life especially at University.
I have some experience with 3D modelling as I did a whole project with Cinema 4D before but I haven't looked into Maya which is the program that I have been asked to look at. This just seems like a simpler version of Cinema 4D which I quite like as cinema 4D was initially quite complicated but I got used to it over time. The screenshots above are some general screenshots of a pillar project being built just for reference I will also add the link to the video at the end of the post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With 3D modelling, it does differ quite heavily from physical model making as you can more easily replicate and try put different stuff where it will be exactly how you want it to the millimetre which is quite useful.
It is easier in some respects to paint and weather a physical model and it is more satisfying but for the actual making process it is a lot easier to plan and create it especially since you can rewind what you do easily if you make a mistake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This last video is just another general video explain How Maya would which is useful to look at and I might start to experiment with 3D modelling in my spare time for some practice for university.
Overall, I do think that 3D modelling is easier in the physical respects but you have to think about a lot more like shapes and angles and such whereas physical modelling is all about cramming stuff into the shape you want with added details, so I can see why bigatures are so popular within larger films like LoTR and I can see how it would interact with physical model making as well.

The Wandering Woods
Still with Weta Workshop I was asked to look into The wandering Woods book of sorts which depicts loads of different forest critters with some of them being used for like book covers or like books in general.
This almost reminds me of like a bestiary of sorts which is quite cool and is something I could realistically do if I made more mini versions of my diorama and potentially different areas of my world which could look quite good.
I think I would do it more on the style of like an occult like book with yellowed out pages and rougher sketches with proper images next to it like an old occult book found in some ruins.

Johnny Fraser-Allen
After Looking at Weta Workshop with Adam Savage I also found another Weta Workshop Artist who I want to quickly look at being Fraser-Allen as he primarily seems to be a sculptor first and formeost but has also done some really cool concept arts as well.
His works are all weird but fantastically cool in a very Terry Pratchet sort of way which I really like. some of his works That I like the most include this rabbit wizard as it just make same laugh thinking about a wise rabbit.
I also wanted to take the time to talk about how my project would work as a game as the Weta Workshop has produced a lot of scenery that could be used in a game and so I want to discuss how this could be used in a game like scenario.
Initially I had wanted this to be a part of a DnD like game scenario in which if I made this project smaller I could use it as a battle map of sorts for the players to use which I would think is really cool and fits quite well with the theme of the story that I had put together.
I was also thinking about having it set in a Elden ring kind of Dark souls setting with either entirely open world or open world but linear at the same time as This doe stake a lot of inspiration from Elden ring and the souls games so it can work in a game like that. I would also be able to use my models and diorama s as potential bigatures for larger scenes which would be good.
I am also going to add some of Fraser-Allen's works here and a link to his Art station -

Adam Savage
I am going back to Adam Savage just to mainly talk about a collaboration with Weta Workshop on a personal labyrinth project and to talk about his youtube channel as I have found it insanely useful for multiple projects with how he teaches new modellers different techniques in an easy way that's logical with how his videos ae structured.
His videos are structured in logical order which might sound obvious but I have see some videos that do stuffing a weird order that confuses me so having a channel that is logical is really helpful to look at.
With his Collaboration the work that the Weta Workshop modellers has done an amazing job at recreating his own little (well massive) labyrinth with a modular town at the end of it. that's insane to have a modular town that looks that could alongside some insanely detailed tree triceratops (treeceratops I suppose) which actually really impresses and inspires me.

Bigatures and Lord of the Rings
Bigatures are an interesting concept, smaller scale Dioramas that are used in films and tv to film the scenes and to make it look like it is a real place. the best example I can think of for this is Lord of the Rings and the Many Bigatures that they used within the filming to create some amazing films.
I personally believe that this is a very effective method of filming as a combination of CGI and modelling would mean that you can firstly light it however you want with the CGI and you can easily add and take away bits as it is a physical model. they also make for great memorabilia.
My favourite bigature from lard of the rings that I have seen has to be the trebuchets as they actually work and the modellers get to have fun flinging around projectiles testing there own product which I love about the modelling industry as its not just all about getting the job done its about having fun all the way through as well.
Models also bring a lot of physicality and wonder to films in my opinion because at the end of the process of filming they aren't just a file stored on the computer, they are a physical object that aspiring modellers can use for inspiration (like me) or other fully fledged modellers can use them again for different projects so in a sense they are sustainable.
I will add link to the Lord of the Rings video I wanted as well -

How to Build Ultra Realistic and Epic Fantasy Diorama - eBi Crafted
This is another video From eBi Crafted and this one was a little longer but that's because he was doing an amazingly detailed Diorama that I could have very easily copied for my own work with how good it was physically and with how it could fit in my story (if you changed a couple of bits and pieces).
With this Video I have also learned a couple of new things I could have done as well that just make sense. The first bit being that I could have made my Diorama more 3D and a hell of a lot more creepier by having the entrance way in from the the creature all the way behind it which I think would have had a much creepier effect although it would have been harder to make.
I also have realised that I could have used polystyrene instead of foam as the bulk materials for m church as the college had a lot of it I just didn't think to use it and it would have made my project a lot easier to carry wit it being lighter.
There are a few more smaller bits like little details like using real mud for a mud texture and incorporating depth into my Diorama (which I have talked about) but all in all I think I learned a lot for the future of my modelling based off of this YouTube and many more to improve my Diorama making skills for the future.

How to Build Realistic Diorama Medieval Castle Tower and Gate - eBi Crafter
This Video was really relaxing and well paced I feel. It was about 10 minutes longer than the previous video which I was dubious of at first but in the end I really enjoyed watching him create a castle out of such simple materials.
For this he mainly just used a clever combination of hot glue, cardboard and foam with some grass and moss accessories to create a fairly realistic looking Diorama which I am impressed with.
With this video I have learned that I should have made a mock-up trial using cardboard before diving straight into my Diorama because then I could have played around more with my design and how I wanted to make it the creepiest but most accurate design that I could.
I also learned that I could have left it more modular until closer to the end so that It was easier to manage like I had intended to initially but I decided against it as I was put under a time pressure to make sure that I got it done so I dived straight into it.
Overall this video has taught me a lot more about planning a diorama than actually building one as a lot of the skill she uses are skills I have already used its just the simplicity of his project that has made me realise that I can easily mock up more designs in easier to use materials to get a better end product.

The Ultimate Dagobah Swamp Diorama - Kathy Milatt
This video that I got asked to look at is actually quite fun to watch and gives off a different feeling to some of the other videos that I have watched from Laser creation for example. I say this because she has quite short but informative video of her Diorama Process that are about half the time of any other I have watched which makes it enjoyable to watch.
I did also pick up a few new things that I could have tried with my project firstly being to make some rotten trees using foil as a base for them as a rotten tree would have been a great idea to really set the mood of my diorama even if it was just one looming over in the corner potentially reaching out towards my creature.
Another thing I want to try that I got from this video is the hanging brown almost vine like moss hanging off of luke's X-Wing as it does look dead and I feel like it would work well if I made my character slumped against the wall so that I could have moss hanging off of it.
Overall I really enjoyed watching this video and might go back to her channel in the future for further projects as I have found her quite useful to look at.

TOP 5 Amazing Dioramas - Laser Creation
This is another video From Laser Creation that I am looking at which highlights his top 5 videos in terms of views which all are really interesting to look at. I did notice that they did also use fairly similar techniques so I am only going to be focusing on the bits that I feel like I should have done and that would have improved my Diorama.
The first bit being resin water. In the first video it depicts a Russian tank fallen through the ice of a river and the water actually looks like water rather than the green PVA that I used to try and emulate scummy water.
The next thing I realised was in the cliff diorama with how he weathered the cliff as he used a lot of green to try and make the cliff seem a lot older and overgrown which I should have done, at least slightly more than I did or as in a more necroed way to really get the feeling of death out there.
The next thing I realised was when I was watching him make his Windmill Diorama and that was I should have added more smaller details like weapons and armours scattered about as I have realised that the devil sin the smaller details that people don't necessarily notice right away but they still are there in the background making the main physical piece more interesting than just a church with a horrific creature in front of it.

U.S. Navy Seal remains in combat Diorama scale 1:35 (laser Creation)
As I needed to look into more dioramas and how they are created ad how I could learn from them I am going back to laser creation again to look at his Navy seal Diorama which is off a very typical American house which is quite nicely made.
Throughout the video The creator is using a fair amount of techniques that I have already used, but he has also used some techniques that I wish I had uses, these are mainly in the grass and garden area as the house is mainly just prefab pieces he has put together and has modified with other laser cut pieces which doesn't apply too much to how I made my diorama apart form the weathering and painting but that was fairly similar to what I did anyway.
The first thing I noticed is that he watered down the glue before applying it to the base for the dirt first which would have been such a good idea as I painstakingly painted thick glue on when I could have simply just poured on glue so that was a mistake on my behalf.
After that he sifted grass onto the dirt which I feel like I should have done just to get some greenery into such depressing Diorama. the bit that I am kicking myself for though that this video reminded me of was shrubbery and hot-glueing them down as that would have helped immensely with making the church look broken and overrun.
The addition of small bricks to make small circles around the well or to make the well more realistic would have also been a good addition if I had thought of them initially.

Sculptures (5)
The next sculpture I am going to look at is more of an effigy in my opinion rather than a creature which is why I am looking at it as in most cults or darker religions effigies are heavily used and I feel like that within my world effigies would have been heavily used as a way to see doubt into peoples minds about the opposing religion.
Tumblr media
The first thing that makes me think it is more of an effigy is the large almost sword like blade/ stick in the middle which look a like it would be perfect for stabbing into the ground or into people depending on the message sent.
The humanoid looking arms are also interesting to look at but they have an underlying tone of creepiness as you realise that they look suspiciously like human arms that means that they could actually be human arms used to send a message or as a sacrifice to their won gods for favour and power. I just love all the power the creators give us by not giving a defined backstory for this sculpture which is 100 percent something I want to try with my work. I do want to have some railroading when it comes to peoples imaginations though as there is a story in place that I quite like and that gives context for the diorama and sculpture so I will be vague where I can so that viewers imagination can fill in their own story so that they will hopefully be more engaged with my project and feel like they are included. I also live how angular and sleek it is for a god that was designed to be brute and viscous a bit of irony there.
I also want to comment on how the artist has used a very metallic and almost futuristic design, but has counteracted that by making the metal dirty and slightly rusted which I think is a nice touch. this metallic and almost construct like design does also relate to the eldritch angel of nightmares which further ties all of these different designs together into something I can use as a base for my story and design.
The final Sculpture that I want to look at is a sort of continuation of this effigy idea and leans more towards cults and such with cult leaders which is pretty much what the next sculpture is.
Tumblr media
I love this design in its entirety as it shows how willing humankind is to blindly follow a powerful deity because of the promise of power. I especially like the spiked ring behind the person as the spikes almost look as if they are going into the person which could be a creepily symbolic thing that this cult for my gods could do which I feel like is a really cool idea.
I also really like how the creator has made this in a black and white/grey scale format as it does make it look like this has been found in a scroll or a book which is fitting for my story as everyone is dead so there would be records just left to collect dust and fade over time.
I will say that this design does give me vibes of the cultist brawler from Darkest Dungeon (which I will add an image of for reference) but I find that fine s I have reference Darkest dungeon and the the cult side of things there a fair amount during this project.
Tumblr media
I know that this isn't a sculpture necessarily I just wanted to include it because of the story element I could grab from it as Cults are a decent part of my story so having a design I can reliably go back to in conjunction with all these other amazing sculptures will be really useful for my creatures design.

Sculpture (4)
The next sculpture I am going to be looking at is a sculpture of a creature yes, but it is more like a depiction of a god on a statue which I do think will be useful to look at especially since another project plan I could have done was to make a statue bust of on of these eldritch god like beings.
Tumblr media
A good thing to note that the creator has called this the angel of nightmare which is such a fitting name. With this sculpture I immediately saw a couple of things that I want to examine and relate to my project being the multiple sets of arms, the way that it looks like multiple bodies in one and the mechanical looking face and ring.
The first bit being the arms are an interesting point to look at as they all seem to be doing different things which could implay that they are from different beings and still retain some memorioes of what they have don ein a past life. these arms are also incredibly human and vary with muscle density which is an interesting point to also look at as it further reinforces the idea of this being an amalgomation of different bodies young or old which could work with my project as y creature is their to guard the bodies within the crypt for their god to conusme them and turn them into a philosophers stone for eternal life.
The tentacles are also odd as they seem to be mirroring each set of arms as the shortest ones all have a set of arms that they sort of link to. This design choice is actually pretty clever in my eyes as it does add another element f mystery to this eldritch being which I would love to incorporate into my creature which is why I have opted for the thin almost gut like strands bursting forth from my creature into the walls of the church.
The Giant ring in the background in conjunction with the almost mechanical aspects of the main body do imply that this is an eldritch being that was once a mechanical shell that has gained bodies over its limitless lifespan which adds to the mirage of mystery that the creator has created.
This level of mystery and inferring that the creator has left us to do is really engaging I feel so I am going to do my best to try and learn from this when I write my story and for when i create my creature.
The next sculpture I want to look at definitely moves back on towards creepy and unnatural which is why I am moving back to it as I have been mainly looking at humanoid creatures so a new creature will be good to look at.
Tumblr media
Immediately you can notice the multiple arms coming from its body which does reinforce the idea of it being insanely creepy and with its name being the soul juggler kinds of gives me a sort of tormented soul keeper gone evil vibe which I do really like.
With this sculpture I really like how the arms and appendages are incredibly thin and over stretched as that is what I want to do with my creatures legs as it does really reinforce the idea of creepiness within sculptures. The way they have done this with the arms mostly being bone with minimal amounts of muscle is an interesting design choice that does work for this sculpture, but for my sculpture I want it to be more destroyed and thin rather than naturally thin.
I do really like how they have incorporated the arms along the body and how they have connected the main arms to the front of the sculpture with them almost flowing into a thin and detailed chest area with a potentially open chest, I say potentially as from the images I can't really tell but I can see where the ribcage almost comes out of the chest so I am willing to believe that the chest is slightly open which is insanely cool and is also another inspiration or my creature with its open chest.

Sculptures (3)
The Next sculpture I want to examine and relate to my project is of a minotaur like creature kneeling with its arms bound behind itself with rope.
Tumblr media
With this sculpture I immediately clock the humanoid body shape with the bulls head likening it to a minotaur but not exactly as a minotaur is half bull half man, this only has the head of a bull. With this you could infer that this is also a form of punishment by changing a normal human into this beast buy changing the original head into this. I really like this story idea for this sculpture but whether or not it is true is up to the designers intent.
I do want to reference the roughness of the sculpture as well as the design choice to make the sculpture look like the creature is physically being melded to the ground. The first point about the roughness is that it still looks really good and detailed but it also seems like it has been done for perhaps a rough version which I like the idea of and was something I had wished to do with my project, being to make a rougher copy of my sculpture before going on and fully detailing t. it could also just be the artists style and that is entirely fine as well its just something I thought I would quickly examine.
The melding into the ground part is also an interesting design choice as it could be referencing multiple things like it is being pushed into the ground, or that it is just sinking which gives the viewer a larger variety of stories to play with as well which I really like and will try and incorporate into my project with my story as well as I want it to be engaging. I also want to try and play with this design choice of sinking parts of my creature into the ground as I really think it adds an element of mystery to a project which I really like.
The next Sculpture I want to look at is of a hyper realistic burst open chest exactly like my projects chest, but as I said this is insanely more detailed so I am going to examine the bits I would have loved to have added to my sculpture.
Tumblr media
The very very first thing I want to comment on is how the split travel up the neck and into the face which is a superb design choice that I wish I did as it is insanely creepy and make sense as if something is ripping open a chest cavity with that much force of course it would do more damage to the rest of the body, and as I just mentioned its creepiness is insane. With that out of the way I want to examine the way the artist has turned the ribs into almost bone like claws which can connotate the idea of the chest cavity moving in and grabbing something which is terrifying in its own nature. These 'bone claws' also remind me of teeth which could be a storyline of something possessing and changing the body by physically ripping it open and changing it which I think is insanely creepy and is another story Idea I want to play with with my creature.
I also want to take a look at the very stringy interior of the chest which I must say is insanely detailed and actually looks like the inside of a humanoids chest with the backbone and everything which is a real inspiration for my work. The level of detail that had to be put into something like this is amazing and it even looks real so it was well worth it in the end.

Sculptures (2)
The Next Sculpture that I want to look at is this very alien like sculpture which I wanted to look at mainly for the cool design and to look at the limbs and how long they are compared to the body of the creature as my creature does have that gangly theme with it.
Tumblr media
With this creature I immediately see that its arms are abnormally long for its body despite having legs which does reinforce the idea of long and gangly creepiness which I want to incorporate into my creatures design. I am also looking at the vaguely humanoid torso and arm shape which could mean that this was a humanoid figure horribly twisted into an alien like monstrosity like the void woken from Divinity Original Sin 2 which is also something I can use for the story of my creature as the original god like beings that infected it could be considered as aliens and have twisted it the being in ways that aren't human. I also really like the sort of mix match of different creatures used to create this creature which could link towards it being more of a chimera rather than a changed human form which I really like and is another sculpture Idea I could have played with if I had more time to create another sculpture.
The next Sculpture I am going to look at is like the first goblin that I looked at in the last post but as a full body and more ghoul and undead which I found really useful to look at given the theme of undeath that I gave my creature.
Tumblr media
This creature does give off vampiric vibes like the last one of these sculptures I looked at, but it seems a lot thinner and more malnourished in a way which is similar to what I want to do. the stretched skin towards the top of the arms and near the head and neck is also really interesting to look at as it looks like it is being peeled away from the ribcage which I really like and will probably use it for my own creature as it does look really well done and quite creepy. On the subject of the ribs I also really like how where the skin is stretching away you can clearly see all of the ribs giving the creature that sort of malnourished look I was talking about earlier.

Sculptures (1)
For some more context for my creature I am going to look at 10 different sculptures and relate them to my sculpture and to examine them for techniques and details I can use for my own Sculpture.
The first Sculpture I am going to look at is of someone's depiction of a goblin which doesn't relate too well to my Project but I am looking at it more for the design and seeing how I could bring aspects of this sculpture into my own creature.
Tumblr media
In this sculpture, there is a heavy amount of black and blue almost necrotic veins spread along the body, combined with the skins almost rough and dark texture really gives off the feeling that this creature is a form of undead or is at least going to be undead at some point (in the case of some turning into a vampire). Despite this suspected death, the creature is sculpted so that it has very clearly defined muscles and pulled tight skin around these muscles and most notably around this creatures rib cage which is something I want to incorporate into my design as I want my creature to be quite thin and have stretched skin like the sculpture above.
The only difference between this sculpture and my sculpture is that this sculpture is clearly muscular which isn't what I want my creature to look like as I want my creature to look like it is falling apart and is being held together by the dredges of the parasitic magic that brought its existence in the first place. I was more looking at this sculpture as I really likes how detailed and undead it looked.
The skin colour being a darker tone mixed in with the greys, blues and blacks really reinforces this creepy feeling I get from looking at this sculpture which is something that I had wished I had done to my creature as I am certain that that added detail would have elevated it to new standards.
The next sculpture I want to look at is another humanoid looking creature, but this one had a much more demon like design to it which I want to look at because I was considering going back to my ways of demons and making my creature more demonic.
Tumblr media
When I first look at this image I immediately see the demonic nature of the design but I also notice the fact that some of the bones and such along the arms seem to be protruding up through the flesh as if they weren't there originally. this paired with the very obvious humanlike appearance indicates to me that this was once a more human like creature turned into a devil after death perhaps which is an interesting story point to look at for my creature.
The muscles along the chest are along the chest and arms are also something I would like to point out as they look very had and bone like almost as if armour was melded into the skin which is exactly what I want my creature to look like as the armour plates the original knight would have work would have been melded into its flesh as part of the transformation.
Overall, this sculpture is very interesting to look at from a story perspective as to me it seems like it wasn't originally a demon, which my creature wasn't originally a twisted eldritch beast so their are similarities there, the fact that my creature is also guarding these souls from moving to hell or heaven in my world could influence more forceful demonic changes of creatures and such like my creature. The physical design as well is also really useful to look into for the protruding extras and how the body looks either naturally armoured or has had some sort of armour incorporated or melded into it.

Indiana Jones and The last Crusade (Grail Knight) - Research
I do want to quickly stop in and look at Indiana Jones and The last crusade and most importantly at the Grail Knight that had vowed to guard the holy grail as it does relate a lot to my creature with how it has been tasked to endlessly guard a treasure trove of souls and bodies for their deceased gods.
The idea of being an eternal protector and having the mindset to forever protect something of legendary importance despite physical limitations is something I will definitely use for my creature in a more forced way, This grail Knight chose to stay and protect the holy grail whereas my infected knight was forced to stay there as a sort of punishment not that my creature would know that being dead and magically forced to protect this church like entrance to a crypt.
The lighting and such of the Actual holy grail scene is quite nice to look at as it is lit by quite soft but bright lights giving off an old church vibe with candles and such for prayers, this combined with the context of the holy grail is kind of the opposite of what I want to do with my project but that is what make sit the most relatable as I now have a useful reference to work off of so that I am differing heavily from that golden glow feel which I do not want for my project.

The Mummy Tom cruise - Research
Another Film I want to look at is the Mummy that Tom cruise starred in mainly to look at the settings and scenery used but to also look at the mummy itself and how it is shown and designed and how I can relate that to my project.
One of the First scenes I want to look at is the scene where the sarcophagus is held suspended in the air surrounded by statues of Anubis like creatures surrounding a small lake of sorts. With how dark the scenery is with the fact that's underground in conjunction with the singular piece of light coming from the entrance is spooky in its own nature. The part that I like the most about this scene is the statues surrounding I because at first glance you can't tell if they are protecting it from people, or protecting people form it which is an Idea I could use within my project, as I had initially thought of putting my creature on a circle of sorts that I then could have had creatures around it almost holding it in place if my story had turned out differently. I didn't end up doing this mainly because I wouldn't have enough time to do that many sculptures well at least.
Another scene I want to look at is the actual scene of the mummy trapped in a more modern facility. I wanted to look at this scene mainly for the contrast to the last scene I looked at and how it again could relate to my project if it was discovered in the future by another race of peoples. This scene also gets to show off the mummy in her fully fleshed out form which is interesting to look at. Initially from what I have seen she was a very frail and sunken but then turned into a fully fleshed out creature which I find odd and I think would have looked creepier if she had stayed more thin and haggardly like a zombie or a skeleton which is coincidently what I have gone for with my creature.
I have made my creature this way because of this oddness with this mummy creature as I want my creature to be believably dead in a way and not a creatures that came back to life with all of their strength back.
Tumblr media
(I am also going to add this fanart of one of the scenes in purely because I think it looks cool and it relates to this movie and can be a reference if I decide to do any pixel art for my project which I don't think I will do but it is a possibility).
