*GRABBING YOU* HEY. HEY LOOK AT ME. SHURO DOESN'T HATE LAIOS FOR THE SAME THINGS HE LOVES FALIN FOR OKAY? OKAY? IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME YOU KNOW THAT ALRIGHT. IT'S IMPORTANT YOU KNOW LAIOS AND FALIN AREN'T THE SAME JUST GENDER SWAPPED ALRIGHT? Shuro hates (hates a strong word for it honestly but it's the simplest to use) Laios because he himself was raised to know and rely on subtle social cues and etiquettes that Laios doesn't pick up on while doing the opposite: being very outspoken and unknowingly making things awkward in some situations. THATS WHAT SHURO HATES. We see that Falin while still very weird in her own right is much more conscious of peoples feelings and social cues which Shuro appreciates. SHURO DOESN'T HATE LAIOS FOR LIKING MONSTERS AND WEIRD THINGS AND LOVE FALIN FOR THE SAME HE HATES LAIOS BECAUSE HE DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THE ONLY WAY SHURO KNOWS HOW TO COMMUNICATE BOUNDARIES AND SHURO IS BAFFLED BY IT CONSTANTLY.

kabru: "how can I stop laios from feeding me monsters. there are no possible options here"

Let's not forget to give Laios credit for once again going against the expectations of the Fighter Protagonist. The usual expectation would be "Gah! Why did you stab my sister? I know you had to but! Ah! I'm having complicated emotions that I'm not supposed to have according to my writing so I'm going to brood and take my anger out on you!", but instead he's like "Here, I have some theories about why you stabbing my sister didn't work. I'll draw you a diagram, let's workshop this."

"If ufos existed we'd have crystal clear pictures of them, everyone has a smartphone with a quality camera literally in their pocket"
Have you considered that maybe ufos only show themselves to people who leak magic the gathering cards???

Honestly? My main piece of advice for writing well-rounded characters is to make them a little bit lame. No real living person is 100% cool and suave 100% of the time. Everyone's a little awkward sometimes, or gets too excited about something goofy, or has a silly fear, or laughs about stupid things. Being a bit of a loser is an incurable part of the human condition. Utilize that in your writing.

Deeply dispiriting post: testimony from a DOJ antitrust action reveals the entire book publishing industry is celebrity memoirs, established franchise authors like James Patterson, children's books, Bibles, and back catalogues (e.g. Lord of the Rings). Publishing new authors is not even a rounding error; you get the sense it's only done anymore out of a vague sense of obligation, and the moment one of the Big Five decides on the defect strategy, and stops doing that to save a few more bucks, it will end entirely.

I feel like something that really works for Dungeon Meshi is that all the characters are good at their jobs from the beginning. At the start of the show/manga the Touden party is one of the best parties in the business.
They got wiped in the first episode/chapter, but they got wiped on the 6th floor where we don't see another party on a floor lower than the 5th, castle town, even then the only group we meet is Shiro's who was part of the original party and super skilled. Shiro is an expert swordsman who went to the dungeon to test himself, he was the best fighter in the party and the ace to deal killing blows to dragons. Namari is a dwarf who is likely a better fighter than Senshi and takes better care of her equipment. Laios is a good fighter, maybe not the best, but he is good an super knowledgeable. Falin and Marcille are two top class mages, Marcille might be inexperienced as a practical caster, but by the time the series starts she is very powerful. Chilchuck is the leader/creator of the half-foot union, he is good at his job and has survived since he was a wide eyed kid to a grizzled old man who looks like a kid to other races. they were stacked at the start of the series and it makes sense why they are well known in adventurers circles.
They aren't newbies who are blessed with plot armor and being the main characters of the story. They are very powerful and experienced adventurers who just happen to meet the most powerful monster in the dungeon on empty stomachs. Even once the series starts, they're at a disadvantage not because they're lacking skills, just they lose two of the parties best fighters. Marcille, the parties mage, is easily able to knock out/kill a running mushroom that was giving a party of noobs a thrashing.
I get why a lot of stories start with young inexperienced kids, but sometimes its nice to read stories that star older heroes who are good at their jobs instead of something like a rookie red ranger situation. Especially now that I'm older

hey mark, i just wanted to say that Plot is an absolute slam dunk 10/10 A+ mechanic for me, personally, and one i definitely hope to see again in future. setting up huge blow-out turns, synergizing with play-from-exile or cast-multiple-things type effects, it's all so much fun. it seems, from my perspective, like such a versatile little mechanic and i hope it has more in stock. please give out high-fives to everyone involved in plotting such a wicked mechanic!
High fived myself, and will the rest of the vision design team that made it. It is my favorite mechanic of the set (with spree a close second).

Being autistic is weird because I think I'd be entirely entirely immune to the maddening effects of witnessing an Elder God but learning that barnacles are arthropods rather than molluscs nearly gave me an existential crisis

If you take pithy character descriptions of Chainsaw Man's female cast, you can easily portray Fujimoto as a mangaka who despises women and piles negative traits onto every single one of them relentlessly. Then you actually read CSM and it's blatantly obvious FJM thinks every single thing deeply wrong with these women are the best parts about them.
