You can be a hero, too! Boku no Hero Academia TCG - Your character on a card
Hello there, dear reader! If you’re new to this blog you might not know this, but I am a big fan of the Boku no Hero Academia TCG. I love looking at all the different cards, thinking about different decks to build, and how great it would be to have an English version released one day. But sadly, no such thing seems to be planned as of yet.
Which is where I come into play! Have a look at this:
Tumblr media
This is a character of a good friend of mine, in card from! While the template I use isn’t the cleanest (and I am terrible at cleaning things up), it still looks like a decent enough card, right?
If you want to see your own character made into a card, today’s your lucky day! If you manage to send me both a drawing of your character as well as a short description of them, I’ll turn them into a card for you! Please note, however, that if there are too many people sending in characters, it might take a bit longer to get to your character specifically. I’ll try for sure, though, and that’s a promise!
The characters I turn into cards will be presented in a post on this blog in the future, and if there are enough of them, there will be several posts covering everybody’s characters.
THERE IS NO END DATE! Send in your request whenever you can! I’ll be happy to do you a favour, and hope to generate a bit more interest for this great game this way.
And before I forget it! If you like the artstyle of the sample character above, boy have I got good news for you! The artist has a blog of his own, and all you have to do to find it is click on the source link of this post. Please show him your love! He’s great!

Boku no Hero Academia TCG Character Spotlight - Iida Tenya
The most thrilling saga continues, as FlamecladConqueror takes a look at the fastest boy in the BNHA TCG! Today, our topic is Iida Tenya, the stoic class rep who loves following the rules and played all Sonic the Hedgehog games to 100% completion (supposedly).
Tumblr media
HA-01-013 Iida Tenya
Dashing in as the first Iida card we’re looking at today, we have an Ultra Rare from set 1. Don’t let his low Power fool you, as this boy has the potential to deal devastating blows to your opponent! By trashing the top 5 cards of your deck, Iida’s Power increases by 3 and he readies himself after the battle - granted that one of the trashed cards was an EX card. Allowing for multiple attacks is Iida’s specialty, and a wonderful mechanical representation of his strongest asset, his speed.
Tumblr media
HA-01-014 Iida Tenya
Another front runner type of character card, this Iida allows you to draw a card as he enters the battle area, as long as he’s the only Student character you control. Makes sense that he’d be the first to arrive at the scene of the crime, right?
Tumblr media
HA-01-015 Iida Tenya
Finishing up Iida’s appearances in set 1, we get a version of him that can trash an opponent with Power 5 or less at the cost of 2 Doryoku. Arguably one of the weaker Iida cards, but not the worst of cards to fill out your deck with, as he provides cheap conditional removal.
Tumblr media
HA-02-010 Iida Tenya
Emergency Exit Iida is a great partner for tag attacks, allowing himself to get ready after tag attacking with another student. If you need some extra Power to get over a strong enemy, Iida provides that and can then deal with whatever’s left on the field by himself - a low Power stat of 4 means you might want to support him, though, just as he supported your first attack.
Tumblr media
HA-02-011 Iida Tenya
For those of you who don’t remember the USJ incident: Iida dashed off to get help from the pro heroes, because the villain invasion proved to be a bit much for the students of U.A. to handle themselves. And this Iida? He does just that! If he gets trashed after battle in your opponent’s turn, you get to add a Hero card from your trash (character or EX) to your hand. What a reliable class rep!
Tumblr media
HA-03-011 Iida Tenya
This Iida from the cavalry battle of the U.A. sports festival receives a boost of +5 Power and +1 Critical if he’s on the field with one of his team-mates, Todoroki Shouto or Kaminari Denki. A flavourful ability, and a nudge towards a team based deck.
Tumblr media
HA-03-012 Iida Tenya
Aside from readying himself, Iida can provide that luxury to other students with this card, paying 2 Doryoku after a tag attack to allow the Student character he attacked with to get ready for another battle.
Tumblr media
HA-03-010 Iida Tenya
And finally, we take a look at Iida’s first awakened version! The support ability allows you to ready a Student character at the cost of 2 Doryoku, making this a purely offensive support option. With his regular ability, as long as you have 4 damage or more, Iida readies himself after battling and opponent’s character he sent to the trash in that battle, at no further cost. Rush them down, Iida! Gotta go fast!
The straight man Iida proves that raw strength alone isn’t the only way to victory, as determination carries him forward at top speed. Watch out for his consecutive attacks, or else you’ll end up in the trash like the villains he fights! As always, I hope you enjoyed this post, and look forward to more in the future.

Todoroki Shouto - A Deckbuilding Guide
To commemorate yesterday’s post, today we’re looking at the options available to those of us curious about a deck that focuses on Todoroki Shouto. Not only is he one of strongest character in class 1-A, he’s also among the top contenders in the TCG! So without any further ado, let’s get right into it!
Tumblr media
[Insert dated Katy Perry reference here]
Todoroki’s main gimmick in this game to lower the opponent’s Power, which allows even weaker characters to score hits and deal some damage. As such, there is a wide variety of options available when choosing suitable partners for Todoroki’s decks. And since Todoroki himself is fairly straightforward in this game, today we’ll skip his card and just focus on the rest of the deck.
Tumblr media
Wheeeeeey.
One of the most interesting partners for Todoroki would be Kaminari Denki. Not only can you make use of him for the ability of HA-03-017 Todoroki Shouto, but HA-03-026 Kaminari Denki makes for an excellent partner who can clear the field of any threat for you. Another very strong partner would be Iida Tenya, who again can fuel Todoroki’s abilitiy, and also allow for consecutive attacks from a powered-up Todoroki!
Tumblr media
Time for teamwork!
HAX-02 also brought us a great card in the form of HAX-02-004 Todoroki & Yaoyorozu. Momo has always been a great choice for support, and her non-support cards have great abilities to generate card advantage, offer protection or recover resources from your trash, but they suffer from a lower Power stat. With the above card, you have a good reason to include Momo cards to trigger its ability, and Todoroki is one of the few characters in this game who can enable low Power characters to really shine on the battlefield. Oh, and of course you get bonus points for shipping these two, because they’re adorable together!
Tumblr media
Music makes the world go ‘round.
Just like Deku, Todoroki consumes a vast amount of Doryoku, so any card that helps you fuel your Doryoku gauge is beneficial in his decks. Thankfully, unlike Deku you won’t even have to worry about the lower Power of most of these characters, as Todoroki’s ability nullifies the issue entirely! HA-01-042 Jirou Kyouka stands out here as a great option, since her ability to add the top two cards of your deck to your gauge triggers on a single attack, which neatly fits into the flow of combat on your turn and gives you Doryoku to use on the opponent’s turn for defensive measures.
Tumblr media
SHOUTOOOOOOOO!
With partners and support out of the way, what kinds of EX cards would you be looking for?
Similar to Deku, you don’t want a lot of Doryoku consumption in your abilities. You could even carry over your selection of EX cards from one of the two decks to the other, without making any (or too many) changes. One thing I want to highlight here is a card from HA-03, HA-03-055.
Tumblr media
Zoom zoom zoom
If you went with Iida as one of your partners, you will absolutely love this card! With an Iida in your battle area, you give +1 Critical to one of your characters when this card attacks, and with a Todoroki in the battle area you also trash every opponent with Power 2 or lower.
And with this, our deck should be ready to go. Gather up your Doryoku, stop your opponent’s attacks and let your low Power partners score some hits to achieve victory! This character archetype feels very control-oriented, while also packing a decent punch. If that’s your kind of deck, I can only recommend Todoroki and the various options available to him. Make use of powerful abilities on low Power characters, and surprise your opponent with how dangerous they can be. I hope you enjoyed this post, and look forward to future installments!

Boku no Hero Academia TCG Character Spotlight - Todoroki Shouto
Another day, another post! We continue our series of character spotlights with one of the stronger characters in class 1-A, Todoroki Shouto. A boy with a troubled past, aiming to become a hero, to prove something to himself and his father! How do his personality and quirk translate into the game? Time to figure this one out!
Tumblr media
HA-01-017 Todoroki Shouto
Beginning with the early stages of Todoroki, our first card focuses on the cold side of his quirk. During the battle phase, at a cost of 5 Doryoku, you return all opposing characters to the hand. Like a blizzard he blows away those who oppose him, and just like the season of winter he is cold and harsh. But can he warm up to others...?
Tumblr media
HA-01-019 Todoroki Shouto
Coming in the same set as the first card, this boy gets a very simple +3 Power boost when he attacks alone. A solitary soldier on the battlefield of modern society, shouldering the burden of being a hero on his own.
Tumblr media
HA-02-013 Todoroki Shouto
In set 2, we get a powerful Todoroki who can freeze opponents in place, lowering the Power of opposing characters to 0 during the battle phase at the cost of 3 Doryoku. And a frozen enemy is easy to defeat!
Tumblr media
HA-02-014 Todoroki Shouto
Another single attacker, this Todoroki has higher base Power than the set 1 version, and lowers an opponent’s Power by 3 rather than increasing his own. I really like the flavour they went for with Todoroki’s ice ability, making it very simple but easy to visualize as you play the game.
Tumblr media
HA-03-014 Todoroki Shouto
With set 3 bringing us character from the sports festival arc of season 2, it’s only natural that Todoroki’s team gets a strong leader, and here he is. If you exhaust an Iida Tenya or Kaminari Denki in your battle area during the standby phase, you lower all opposing character’s Power by 5 and increase Todoroki’s critical by 1. This teamwork allows for a devastating attack!
Tumblr media
HA-03-015 Todoroki Shouto
Very similar to the card from set 2, this Todoroki’s ability also sets the opposing characters’ Power to 0, costing 1 less Doryoku but at the expense of only being usable when he attacks.
Tumblr media
HA-03-013 Todoroki Shouto
And just like the other characters we’ve looked at so far, Todoroki got an awakened version in set 3. When he supports, you set the Power of all opposing characters to 0 at the very low cost of 0 Doryoku, and during the standby phase, while you have 4 damage or more, you can trash a card from your hand to set the opposing characters’ Power to 0 and gain +1 Critical. This card incorporates the abilities of earlier versions of Todoroki into a strong and versatile package, becoming the current pinnacle of his ice powers.
And that’s it! Todoroki’s cards are a lot less varied than those of other characters, but I see no issue with that. The heavy focus on one of his core strengths defines his playstyle and makes it very easy to figure out how to incorporate him into your decks. Thanks to Midoriya’s influence, Todoroki has accepted his fiery side as well, meaning we might get to see some new tricks soon.
SPEAKING OF WHICH! Season 3 will premier soon, and that can only mean one thing - a new set of cards! At least I very much hope so. And if it does happen, you can be sure that I’ll translate the whole set again, so please stay on the lookout for news here! Have a PLUS ULTRA day, dear reader!

Bakugou Katsuki - A Deckbuilding Guide
Since writing up yesterday’s post about deckbuilding in the BNHA TCG was so much fun to write, I decided to do a guide today! We’ll be looking at one of the stronger deck archetypes, one that’s seen a lot of success since the very first set of the game debuted: Bakugou!
Tumblr media
Awww look at his smile :)
Bakugou is a powerful individual, blessed with a highly destructive quirk and sharp wits. Since the damn of this game, he’s been one of the strongest characters available, and set the gold standard for removal. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, that many people build Bakugou decks to compete with at tournaments. The deck is comparatively easy to play, and very flexible in how it is built.
One thing that all Bakugou decks have in common is, of course the Lord of Explodokills. His ability to trash opponents at a very reasonable cost makes him efficient, and his generally high Power stat means he poses a threat to most characters, supported or not.
Tumblr media
Removal doesn’t get cheaper than this.
Since the deck can rely on Bakugou to remove threats and deal reliable damage, you are very free in who to pair him with. Universally useful partners for all Bakugou decks would be characters that help you refill your hand, since the cost for most of Bakugou’s removal is trashing characters from your hand. Dedicated support for the archetype comes in the form of HA-02-022 Kirishima Eijirou and HA-03-021 Kirishima Eijirou, both of which get stronger with a Bakugou on the field. The former has a lower base Power, but can refill your Doryoku gauge on single attacks, while the latter gets a +3 Power boost as long as Bakugou is on the field, but nothing else.
Tumblr media
What a good friend he is.
Thankfully, there are other strong Kirishima cards, and the awakened version of Kirishima is immune to the effects of your opponent’s cards while you have 4 or more damage, making him incredibly hard to get rid of. Kirishima is an ideal partner for Bakugou, bringing with him both consistency and strength.
If you choose to go the Kirishima route of deckbuilding, you might want to take a look at Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu. HAX-02-034 Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu offers pure value when paired with Kirishima, and makes for an excellent emergency fighter for when the Bakugous are unavailable. His awakened form also has a very powerful ability, giving you yet another option to experiment with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hard boys unite!
And speaking of the HAX-02 set, there now is another interesting way to play Bakugou! HAX-02-001, Midoriya & Bakugou, is a card that takes your consistency to 11, allowing you to either trade Midoriya for Bakugou, or Bakugou for Midoriya. And since awakened versions of both characters exist, this card can get you whichever of the two is more beneficial to you in any given situation. The inclusion of Midoriya in a Bakugou deck also gives you access to his specific support cards, like HAX-01-001 Uraraka Ochako or HA-03-024 Tokoyami Fumikage. Both of these are other forms of removal than straight up trashing the opponent’s characters, adding another element of offense to the deck.
And we’ve reached the end of today’s post. The Bakugou archetype boasts explosive power and flexible construction, letting you surprise the opponent with the various partner options available to you. No other deck in the game has such an easy time getting rid of your opponent’s field, and the future looks bright for our little battle maniac.
I hope you enjoyed this post! Stay tuned for more in the future, and thank you very much for reading this far.

Deckbuilding in the Boku no Hero Academia TCG
Tumblr media
Hello, my dearest readers! Today I’m the mood to write up something a little different from what’s usually being posted here. As nice as it is to translate cards and look at how they form a connection between character and mechanics, I can’t help but want to create decks for this game. With the amount of different characters and playstyles available, there are lots of ways to go about building a deck. So what do you need to keep in mind when you build one? It’s my aim to teach you exactly that with this post, so let’s jump right in!
The BNHA TCG lets you take control of various characters from the series, and pits your deck of students, heroes or villains against your opponent’s. The most critical of areas on the playing field is the Battle Area, where you place your characters to attack the opponent with.
As a rule of thumb, your deck should focus on 2-3 characters you want to have in your Battle Area. These will be your main attackers, the ones you want to draw into to make sure your Battle Area is never empty. Usually these are characters with high power, protection-based abilities, or the ability to increase your own power or decrease the opponent’s. The majority of your Character Cards should be these Main Characters. Since you have 32 slots for characters, I’d recommend around 20 to be your MCs, but some decks can get away with more or less. If some of your MCs have an awakened form, you might want more of those characters’ base forms in the deck to consistently awaken them.
Tumblr media
This could be your main character.
Of course battles can’t always be won just by these characters, so you need some to support them. Your Supporting Characters make up the rest of your 32 character cards. You’ll often use these for supporting your MCs when they attack for a power boost, but characters with beneficial abilities in the Battle Area, such as letting you draw cards or trashing opponents, can also be used as SCs. If your MCs are all about fighting, but lack the consistency to make your deck function, you’ll want SCs that help you with getting more cards and other resources like Doryoku.
Tumblr media
Your students will love the draw power!
EX cards are also a vital part of your deck, and you have 8 slots for them. Look at your character lineup and try to find weaknesses you can cover with EX cards. If your deck lacks removal options, you’ll want to look at EX cards that can trash your opponent’s characters, or return them to the deck/hand. Decks that frequently run out of cards to play want EX cards that let them draw, and decks with a heavy reliance on their Doryoku gauge don’t want their EX cards to eat into those resources.
Tumblr media
PLUS ULTRA! Smash those nasty enemies away to attack freely!
Consistency is key in every single TCG there is. What good are your cards if you can’t get them when you need them? So once your initial idea of a deck is ready, test it against other decks. See what cards work well together, and which ones you might have to cut. Note down the areas that need work, and look at cards that can improve your performance. If you get into a situation where you think “Man, I really need this one card to win here!”, include more copies of that card. The maximum amount of copies allowed per card is 4, so make use of those 4! This only counts for the exact same cards - you can have 4 copies of a single Midoriya Izuku card in your deck, and 4 copies of a different Midoriya Izuku card, too.
This concludes today’s very basic post on deckbuilding. In the future, I’ll make posts about different types of decks and how to build them, so if you have any favourite characters you want to see a deck of, let me know! I hope this post was of use to you, and you look forward to the next.

BNHA TCG Character Spotlight - The bad guys! Part 2
We will continue our look at villain characters in the BNHA TCG today, and the characters today are Kurogiri, Dabi and Toga. I wish there was more variety in the villains, but that’s not too big of a deal, since season 3 (airing in April) will include a lot of new villains, meaning more villains in the game!
Tumblr media
HA-02-047 Kurogiri
The first Kurogiri is a card that makes use of the villain’s main purpose from the USJ attack - teleporting in his allies. During your standby phase, you pay 2 Doryoku to put a villain from your trash into your battle area. Not only does that give you access to already defeated characters, it also lets you bring out two characters when maybe you only have a playable Kurogiri in hand! He can surprise the opponent with the sudden appearance of a Noumu or Shigaraki, and or even any of the other villains.
Tumblr media
HA-02-048 Kurogiri
This time it’s a support-focused Kurogiri, who enables the main gimmick of villains so far. On supporting another character, the top two cards of your opponent’s deck trashed. This comes as another nasty surprise, as Kurogiri jumps into the fray out of nowhere and sends enemy resources far away.
Tumblr media
HA-P-062 Toga Himiko
Currently only available as a promotional card, Toga was given out at last year’s Jump Festa. She’s a nasty card, trashing every player’s entire Doryoku gauge as she enters the battle area, and getting +1 Power for each card trashed that way. She can become a nearly unstoppable force, but be careful not to drain your own resources when you might need them the next turn! This is a wonderful way of showing off her troublesome, childish attitude.
Tumblr media
HA-P-061 Dabi Last, but most certainly not least for today, we have a Dabi promotional card, also given out at last year’s Jump Festa. At the cost of putting the top card of your deck into your damage area, he lowers the Power of every other character in the battle area to 0, during either player’s battle phase. If used correctly, this can save you from taking further damage, but the cost of the ability makes it dangerous to use continuously.
And with that, we’re finished with the main villains, at least for now. Future sets will no doubt include more villains, and I would love to look at those once they come out, too. The archetype is quite different from any other in the game, actively denying the opponent’s resources with almost every play, and aiming to win via attrition more than pure strength. It’s a control deck, and a fun one to use at that!
I hope you enjoyed this article, and stay tuned for what’s coming next week.

BNHA TCG Character Spotlight - The bad guys! Part 1
Welcome dear readers to the fourth instalment of our character spotlight, where the connections between character traits and game mechanics will be presented to you by yours truly (that’s me!).
This time we’re going to delve into the depths of villainy, taking a look at two characters who’ve caused quite some problems for our beloved cast. I’m talking about the main antagonist, Shigaraki Tomura, and his massive “friend” Noumu. So what do they have to offer? Read on and find out.
Tumblr media
HA-02-043 Shigaraki Tomura
Shigaraki makes his first appearance in the second set of the game, which focuses on the villain attack at USJ. This is the debut set of villains, and it clearly defines their playstyle, centered around denying your opponent their resources. This is a very villainous way to play the game, and Shigaraki does it quite well. During your standby phase, by trashing a villain from your hand, your opponent’s student characters in the battle area get trashed. Shigaraki’s overwhelming presence, and the surprise of his attack, really had an impact on the students.
Tumblr media
HA-02-044 Shigaraki Tomura
And here we have another from of resource denial, in the form of milling. For those unaware, milling refers to sending cards from the deck to the trash (or graveyard, discard pile, etc. in other games). When this Shigaraki is played alonside another villain in your battle area, the top 3 cards of your opponent’s deck end up in the trash. This is a very powerful ability, and one of the key features of villains in this game.
Tumblr media
HA-02-045 Noumu
The villain alliance’s brute force beatstick makes an appearance in set 2 that is sure to leave its mark. Noumu in the series is a powerful monstrosity with destructive force in the top percentage. In the card game, this translates to a massive +9 Critical on a single attack while he’s together on the field with another villain. While 9 Critical does greatly increase the likelihood of your opponent getting a lucky damage cancel, it also greatly increases the likelihood of either outright defeating your opponent in one strike or at least trashing a great number of their cards.
Tumblr media
HA-03-051 Shigaraki Tomura
Set 3 brings us an awakened Shigaraki, and he’s quite dangerous. His support ability is denial-focused again, simply trashing a card from your opponent’s hand. His regular ability, active while you have 4 damage or more as well your opponent having 1 or fewer cards in hand, boost all of your battle are characters by +3 Power and +1 Critical. As long as you manage to set the scene for him, he’ll unleash a devastating attack together with his underlings. Fitting for the man hell-bent on killing the Symbol of Peace.
Tumblr media
HA-03-052 Shigaraki Tomura
Released in the same set as awakened Shigaraki, this one here can trash an opponent’s battle are character when he enters the field, as long as your opponent’s hand is at 1 or fewer cards. The villains like to attack where it hurts, and when they see an opening, a weakness to exploit, they go all in on it.
Tumblr media
HA-03-053 Noumu
And the final card for today, Noumu from set 3 just doesn’t stop hurting. If he manages to hurt the opponent with a single attacks, he rubs salt in the wound by also having them discard a card from their hand. This is cruel, emotionless monster of a man we’re talking about here, who doesn’t know the meaning of mercy. All he knows is how to kill, and this card kills it for sure.
And there you have it, the villains of the BNHA TCG! Or, well, part of them. Talking about them all in one post would be a bit much, so next time there will be more of them. And as a special treat, two of next week’s card will be promos. I hope you enjoyed this, and look forward to next time!

BNHA TCG Character Spotlight - Kirishima Eijirou
Another week, another spotlight post, and today we’re taking a look at my personal favourite character of the series. Kirishima is a beacon of sunshine, an energetic young kid with passion and ambitions, and his heart in the right place. He’s also strong and sturdy, and has one of the most basic powers imaginable in the form of hardening his body. But does that mean he’s weak in the TCG? And do his cards reflect his character mechanically? Let’s find out!
Tumblr media
HAD-01-005 Kirishima Eijirou (also HA-01-028)
The first card of Kirishima, included in the first Midoriya Izuku starter deck, was a solid card at its time. At the expense of 1 Doryoku, he would gain +3 Power during the battle phase, meaning his effect can be used both offensivle and defensively. And here we already have it, a perfect way to represent this character’s quirk ingame. It’s a very flexible effect, at a low cost, and it shows you that hardened skin isn’t just good for taking hits, it also lets you dish out some pain.
Tumblr media
HA-01-026 Kirishima Eijirou
A Super Rare from the first set, this boy lets you draw 2 cards and then trash 1 from your hand during the standby phase, at a cost of 3 Doryoku. On the surface it doesn’t look like it has a direct connection to his character, but if you go beyond, you’ll quickly remember how Kirishima’s optimism and willingness to help his friends can push them forward, and that’s exactly what this card does for you.
Tumblr media
HA-02-022 Kirishima Eijirou
In the second set we got another Super Rare, and this Kirishima works best with Bakugou. If he’s attacking alone while Bakugou is on the field with him, he adds two cards to your Doryoku gauge and gains +3 Power. Bakugou and Kirishima have a good relationship with each other, and Kirishima isn’t put off by Bakugou’s rude attitude. He wants the guy to warm up to the others, and is willing to get into Bakugou’s blast radius (the height of comedy, folks) to achieve that.
Tumblr media
HAD-04-007 Kirishima Eijirou (also HA-03-021)
In set 3 we get Kirishima who loves working with Bakugou, and this time he’s both offensive and defensive. With a Bakugou on your field, his Power goes up to an amazing 9 during either player’s turn, making him not only a very strong attacker, but also tough and hard to get rid of. Kirishima was a key part of Bakugou’s cavalry team strategy, able to withstand not only the other students’ attacks, but also Bakugou’s own blasts.
Tumblr media
HA-03-020 Kirishima Eijirou
A slight variation of the first Kirishima card, this time you trash a student from your hand to draw a card and gain +3 Power during the battle phase. Once more he is both offense and defense, and even replaces the card you have to trash for his ability. Is this a sign of better mastery of his quirk? Character progression in MY TCG?!?!
Tumblr media
HA-03-019 Kirishima Eijirou
Finally, the card I wanted to talk about the most, the awakened Kirishima from set 3. With a base Power of 9, your opponent will have a hard time breaking through his defenses, and his awakened ability makes it even harder. As long as you have 4 damage or more, he’s unaffected by the effects of your opponent’s cards and gains an extra Critical! That’s the pinnacle of offense and defense, and it even works in both players’ turns. What about his supportive ability? Awakened Kirishima boosts the Power of both of your battle area characters by 3, acting as 2 supports in 1. And that push in Power can help you defeat a powerful foe, or withstand an oncoming attack from the enemy. I love this card, and you should, too!
This brings us to the unfortunate end of this week’s post. As you can see, if you aren’t Deku one of the “main” characters, you get a bit less love in this game with representation. But that does not mean your cards will be worse, as proven by Kirishima right here. A boy as hard as rock, who protects his friends and fights against the evils of our world - what’s not to like?
Tune in next week, when things might get a little bit...darker?! Oh my~

BNHA TCG Character Spotlight - Bakugou Katsuki
It’s time for another post in which we take a closer look at specific characters in the Boku no Hero Academia TCG. Today’s character of choice is the main rival of the main character, Bakugou Katsuki. How well has this character been depicted in the game? How do the game mechanics tie into his personality? If you’re curious about this sort of stuff, read on to find out!
Tumblr media
HAD-02-001 Bakugou Katsuki
The first card of Bakugou we’ll be taking a look at is the second starter deck’s ace card, and boy is it a good one. His Power is higher than that of the main character, which is accurate (especially if you factor his control over his quirk, unlike Midoriya). The ability touches on a core aspect of Bakugou, his superiority complex. By sending one Bakugou Katsuki from your hand to the trash, you destroy an opponent’s character and gain +2 Power. It can’t be just any card you discard, it has to be a Bakugou. He doesn’t like relying on others or working with them, because as far as he’s concerned, he’s better than all of them.
Tumblr media
HA-01-009 Bakugou Katsuki
The Ultra Rare version from the first booster set sets aside the destroying of enemies in favor of pure strength. Send a Bakugou from your hand to the trash, get +5 Power and +1 Critical. The sheer destructive force of his quirk is represented in this ability, and it continues the trend of his “I don’t need any of your help” attitude that is prevalent in the early arcs of the story.
Tumblr media
HA-01-011 Bakugou Katsuki
An underwhelming card as far as Bakugou goes, but its main draw is that the cost is a simple 3 Doryoku to trash an opponent’s character. He can be played without any other Bakugou in your deck, making him splashable spot removal at a reasonable cost. And, well, explosions can kill people, so the design here works.
Tumblr media
HA-02-007 Bakugou Katsuki
The second set brings us another high power explosion boy, this time discarding a Bakugou to draw a card and gain +3 Power. He’s still strong, and he’s still pretty selfish. It’s almost as if there is no character development for this guy, is there? What a shame.
Tumblr media
HA-02-008 Bakugou Katsuki
This time we don’t need to discard a Bakugou to activate an ability - well, not any other Bakugous. Because this one right here activates by being discarded for the cost of your other Bakugou cards! And he lets you send an enemy with Power 4 or lower back to the hand. Bakugou works best with Bakugou, what a surprise.
Tumblr media
HAD-03-002 Bakugou Katsuki (it’s actually HAD-04-002)
Did someone complain about character development earlier? Because it looks like we got it! Yes, starting from set 3 onwards, Bakugou loses his attribute of selfishness and no longer requires to discard himself to activate abilities. You can discard any student now. How does that tie into his character? Well, at the sports festival he had to actually make use of others to advance, and he displayed expert knowledge regarding the strengths and weaknesses of his classmates, forming a powerful team. Trashing an opponent with Power 6 or less and increasing his own Power by 4 points is a Bakugou effect like you’d expect from him.
Tumblr media
HAD-04-001 Bakugou Katsuki
The first awakened form of Bakugou comes without any costs for his abilities, and both are surprisingly powerful. If you use him as a support, he draws you a card (essentially replacing himself), and lets you destroy the opponen’t support on top of that. And when he attacks while you have 4 or more damage, his Critical increases by 2, causing big damage. This is a fantastic card both offensively as well as defensively, and it plays to Bakugou’s strengths.
Tumblr media
HA-03-008 Bakugou Katsuki
Bakugou might have learned that accepting other people’s help can be useful, but that doesn’t mean he wants to rely on them, which this card here shows off pretty well. Its ability lets you send a student from your hand to the trash to return a Bakugou from your trash to your hand. I don’t think I have to explain just why this card is incredibly good in Bakugou decks.
Tumblr media
HA-03-007 Bakugou Katsuki
King Explosion Murder goes beyond in his awakened version from the third set, with two frightening abilities. For the low cost of 3 Doryoku on support, you trash an opponent’s character of your choice, and while you have 4 or more damage you can trash a card from your hand to trash an opponent’s character and deal 1 damage to them. While the starter deck version was a powerful attacker and counter-support, this card emphasizes offense, and can finish a game just by being played. A great way to utilize game mechanics to show off the wild, brutal nature of Bakugou.
And there you have it, folks! Our second character has been discussed, and this one was fun to write up. There was a bit less to talk about here than last time, but that doesn’t make him any less interesting. In fact, I think the perceived simplicity of his character is a great strength of his. Who will be next? Stay tuned for the upcoming post, and maybe your suggestion will influence it!

BNHA TCG Character Spotlight - Midoriya Izuku
Hello dear reader, and welcome to a new series of posts where I’ll shine the spotlight on all the various characters present in the Boku no Hero Academia TCG. I’ll show off their cards, talk about how well they represent the character, and how you would play this character in the game.
For the sake of simplicity, I’ll only be looking at the card from main sets in detail, including the start decks. That means cards from the Plus Ultra Packs, as well as promotional card, won’t be discussed here.
If you have any questions about the cards, feel free to ask away! And wishes on which character to show off next will, of course, be taken into consideration. Now, let’s get right down to business with the main character of the series, Midoriya Izuku!
Tumblr media
HAD-01-001 Midoriya Izuku
The first card of Midoriya Izuku, and cover card of the first starter deck. His stats are average for Deku at the time, and his ability is fairly basic. By expending 4 of your accumulated Doryoku, he powers up to 8 Power and 2 Critical on his attack. You’ll see a lot of his cards implementing Doryoku as their cost, which is very fitting for him as a character - he wasn’t born with his quirk, and through sheer effort he got to where he stands today.
Tumblr media
HA-01-001 Midoriya Izuku
The Ultra Rare variant of Deku from the very first booster set released is similar to his starter deck version, but bigger. Having his ability available in the battle phase makes it both offensive and defensive, and the boost of +5 Power and +1 Critical applies to both characters in your battle area. The cost has been adjusted for such a powerful effect, going up to 6 Doryoku. Again, it fits the theme of his character, though I feel a bit less than the starter deck version.
Tumblr media
HA-01-002 Midoriya Izuku
A card that didn’t look too appealing at first, due to its ability cost causing you to take 1 damage, but very flavourful. Especially early on, Deku keeps hurting himself when he makes use of his powerful quirk, and this card is a wonderful representation of it, trading some of your health for a massive boost in Power (from 4 up to 10) and an extra Critical when you attack. Since the release of awakened characters in the third set, this card is a potential tech option to help you accelerate into the range of 4 damage, while providing a solid attack.
Tumblr media
HA-02-001
Perhaps the most flavourful of Deku’s so far, this one was an Ultra Rare in set 2, which focused on the events taking place during the USJ villain attack. Remember the scene of Deku flicking away all those villains in the water? This is the card version. For a cost of 4 Doryoku, you send back all exhausted enemies to the deck and shuffle the deck. For every card sent back this way, Deku gets an extra Critical. It’s a tag attack ability, which again is flavourful, because without the help of both Tsuyu and Mineta, it wouldn’t have been possible for him to pull off this move.
Tumblr media
HA-02-002 Midoriya Izuku
A card offering us a look at a different aspect of Deku’s personality, focusing on his early helplessness. It’s a support ability, and lets you draw a card as well as increasing his Yujyo by 1, as long as there are 3 or more EX cards in your trash. It’s a cry for help, but also cause for him to do his best and support the fighters however he can.
Tumblr media
HAD-03-002 Midoriya Izuku
With set 3 focusing on the U.A. sports festival, and the characters having gotten stronger since their incident with the villains, it makes sense for Deku to be a bit stronger now. His ability this time takes place during the standby phase, and for the cost of 3 Doryoku lets you draw a card and boost his Power up to 10. It signifies his diligence when preparing to go up against others, making use of what he knows and his experience, to increase his chances of winning.
Tumblr media
HAD-03-001 Midoriya Izuku
The first awakened card of Deku, debuting in the third starter deck, shows us just how strong he can be in the face of adversity. As with all awakened characters, he comes with both a support and non-support ability, but what’s special about him is that he has a Yujyo stat above 0. His support ability fills your Doryoku gauge with the top three cards of your deck, which ties into both his character and his cards in the game. His other ability puts him at 12 Power and 2 Critical on attacking, as long as you have 4 damage or more. Making good use of what he’s learned so far, striving to become even better, this is a wonderful characterization of everybody’s favourite madman.
Tumblr media
HA-03-002 Midoriya Izuku
Similar to the support-focused Deku from HA-02, this Deku doesn’t get any stronger than he is. Instead, you pay 3 Doryoku when he’s played to add an All Might from your trash to your hand. The bond between teacher and student is very strong between these two, and Deku knows he can count on his idol’s help in tough times.
Tumblr media
HA-03-001 Midoriya Izuku
The final card we’ll be looking at today is the awakened Deku from the third booster set. Unlike the starter deck variant, he has no Yujyo to boost with, opting instead to let you draw a card and increasing a character’s Critical by 1 when you support with him, functionally replacing himself with the benefit of added damage. His other ability, also requiring 4 or more damage, has a cost of discarding a card from your hand, resulting in the trashing of your opponent’s battle area and an extra Critical for Deku himself when he attacks. This is a very offensive card, and goes to show just how powerful Deku has become since starting his journey towards becoming a professional hero.
So, how do you make use of Deku in the game? What becomes obvious once you take a look at his different cards is the common factor of his abilities costing Doryoku to activate, pushing you towards including cards that help with Doryoku management. There are several options to help fuel your Doryoku gauge, but it’s just as important to make sure your deck doesn’t run too thin, so make sure to play cards that can refill your deck, too! Since the older versions of Deku have fairly low base Power, you’ll need partners that can survive attacks and strong supports to defend with. Uraraka makes a good partner for Deku due to many of her cards sending enemies away from the battle area, and some having useful tag attack abilities.
This brings us to the end of today’s post! Did you enjoy it? If you have any questions, or wishes on who to look at next, make sure to let me know one way or another.

Rarity in TCGs
Hey there people! You might remember me as the guy who posted a bunch of translations for the Boku no Hero Academia TCG and then suddenly went quiet for a bit. That’s because...there was nothing new to talk about.
But today, that changes! Or not, depending on your perspective, because our topic is something that’s been going on for several years in many different games. Those of you who play TCGs will know that most of these games, if not all of them, have their cards appear at different rarities. But what does that mean for us, as players?
I’ll begin this by saying that I am in no way opposed to the idea of better cards being restricted to higher rarities. In fact I think it’s reasonable for companies to make their best product a bit more difficult to obtain, to drive sales and maintain a steady stream of revenue from people purchasing their product in hopes of getting those good cards.
But sometimes, things just don’t feel fair. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Buying booster packs at our local card store, only to be disappointed by what we pull out of them. So we save up our pocket money for the next trip, and guess what - yup, yet another disappointment. We’re just not getting any of the good cards. Why is that though?
With cards coming at different rarities, the higher a rarity is, the rarer it is to get a certain card (that much is obvious). What can make this unnecessarily more infuriating, though, is when there’s a big pool of cards to pull from those high rarities, and some of those cards aren’t even that good to begin with.
You are also much more likely to pull certain rarities if you buy sealed displays of booster packs, rather than random packs. That’s because there’s a set distribution rate of different rarities based on a by-box basis, meaning you’re guaranteed to get (at least) X number of cards of any given rarity in each box. If you buy random boosters, however, there’s no guarantee. You’ll end up with whatever there was in them.
In Yu-Gi-Oh!, for example, you’ve got the rarities of Common, Rare, Super Rare, Ultra Rare and Secret Rare. Since a change last year, every pack is guaranteed to come with 7 Commons, 1 Rare and 1 Super Rare. If you’re lucky, you’ll have an Ultra Rare OR Secret Rare replace the Super Rare of your pack. Back before that change, your only guarantee was a Rare, and anything better would replace a Common in the pack.
In addition to this change, they also increased the rates at which you could pull Ultra Rares and Secret Rares from booster packs. To compensate for this change, they got rid of a special rarity that looked really sweet, but ultimately served no purpose other than looking pretty. All in all not a bad change, right?
But Yu-Gi-Oh! is known for having cards at questionable rarities. One of the biggest offenders for most players is when a card that came at a low rarity, usually Common or Rare, in the OCG (Official Card Game - that’s the game in Japan, for example) gets turned into a higher rarity, usually Ultra Rare or Secret Rare, in the TCG. The card is exactly the same as it was in the OCG, same effect, same power level, but the rarity got artificially inflated to drive sales.
Another thing TCGs like to do is introduce more rarities as the game goes on, and I’ll use the Boku no Hero Academia TCG as an example here. It started out with the rarities Normal, Rare, Super Rare and Ultra Rare, and those rarities were present in sets HA-01, HA-02 and HAX-01. With the release of set HA-03, a new rarity, Plus Ultra Rare, was added. What did that change?
Simply put, the strongest cards now are no longer of the Ultra Rare rarity, but instead are of Plus Ultra Rare rarity. The appearance rate of below-PU cards has been increased, and you’re still getting one PU card per box. Thankfully enough, there’s a limited quantity of PU cards in a set (so far there have been 4 in each of the two sets since the rarity’s introduction), but other TCGs aren’t as generous with their highest rarities.
To make matters worse, TCGs have a powerful tool available at their disposal, allowing them to control the appearance rate of certain cards they deem good enough to make them box-sellers on their own, and that tool is called short printing.
Again, Yu-Gi-Oh! is (or has been? I haven’t bought sealed product in ages) notorious for this. One instance I remember fondly is the set The Secret Forces, which was comprised of only Super Rare and Secret Rare cards, with a pack containing 5 cards, 4 Super Rares and 1 Secret Rare. You’d think your chances of pulling a certain Secret Rare were the same across the board, right? But no, powerful cards like The Nekroz of Trishula got short printed, making them much more difficult to pull from a pack than other cards of the same rarity, with people reporting pulling less than 3 of that card in total from several displays.
By artificially lowering the print run of certain cards, they’ll become even rarer than their same-rarity companions, driving up prices on the secondary market. Companies could care less about the secondary market as long as their product sells, but for the players this practice means extremely high prices if they wish to keep up with the game on a competitive level.
I’ll cut things short here because I feel like talking any more about the topic is gonna end with me ranting about things, but let me state one more time: Having different rarities is in itself not a bad thing. What makes it bad is the companies behind the games using their rarity systems to milk money out of their players. Not every game does this, but those that do make their playerbase sad enough that I feel like it is a topic that should be brought up every now and then.
I’m not entirely sure if this kind of post is gonna be appreciated, but it felt nice to just write down some of my thoughts on a topic, so it’ll probably happen again in the future. Until then, I wish all of you who’ve read this far a good time.

APOLOGIES! Late translations of Boku no Hero Academia TCG set 3!
(A simple click on the source link will take you straight to the official card gallery for HA-03! You may also want to check out the card galleries for HAD-03 and HAD-04, for which the translations are also included in this post.)
All the hype about the new Plus Ultra Pack Vol.2 releasing this saturday (and a severe lack of organization on my part) has led to me forgetting to post my translations for the previous set on this blog. I couldn’t possible call myself the #1 source for English content about this game if I didn’t provide you with these translations!
Then again, I’m not that great of a source to begin with, haha! So to properly apologize for this massive delay in delivering translations, I’ll post the translations for all current promo cards later today, too! That’s another full set’s worth of cards for you to read. I hope this will make up for my incompetence.
The translations for HA-03 and the promos have been done close to the release of the 3rd set, when I first started translating these cards. As a direct result of that, they lack some of the “refinement” of my HAX-02 translations. A lot of the card text is shortened - instead of a card saying “This character gets +3 Power”, it will say “+3 Power”. I also didn’t include the stats (Power, Yujyo, Doryoku) in each card’s translation, because back then I only used them for my own purposes. I recommend having a separate tab open with the card gallery.
HAD-03 Midoriya Izuku Kakusei Ver.

IT’S HERE! The complete card gallery of Boku no Hero Academia TCG Plus Ultra Pack Vol.2!
It went live! If you click the source link, you’ll be taken directly to the official site’s card gallery of the new set. No more twitter reveals, because now everything has been revealed!
And everything has been translated by me. I do not guarantee these translations to be 100% accurate, because all the Japanese I know is a few card game terms. The rest comes from using Google translate and piecing things together. Translating these 60 new card took approximately 3 1/2 hours, which is a LOT faster than it took me to translate the previous set (I did that over several days, haha). I hope you’ll enjoy these, and if you spot any mistakes, please let me know so I can fix them! (I realized that I mistranslated the awakened Stain card that has been revealed, which has been fixed, hopefully, in the full set translations).

Card reveals for new Boku no Hero Academia TCG set, part 6 - DID SOMEONE SAY HARDBOIZ???
Check the source! For real! It’s time for the hardest, toughest, most manly team in the history of Boku no Hero Academia! KIRITETSU! HYPE! You’ll also notice that this post’s source is not from the official Twitter, but from a different user. This user makes blog posts about new card reveals and talks about the revealed cards, so check that out if you’re interested!
ANYWAYS!
Kirishima: [Your Turn][Opponent’s Turn] When next to “Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu”, all characters in your battle area are unaffected by your opponent’s card effects
Tetsutetsu: [Battle Phase](1 Doryoku) When next to “Kirishima Eijirou”, draw 1 card, this character gets Power +4.
It’s a really strong combination, and with a little help from strong supporters and EX cards (specifically the KiriTetsu card from set 3), you can wall off your opponent while you bash away at them with MANLY POWER!

Card Reveals for new Boku no Hero Academia TCG set, part 5 - Tag Team Edition
If you click on the source link, you’ll see today’s card reveals, which are two tag team cards!
The first team, Aoyama & Uraraka, has the following ability:
[Standby Phase] (Trash 1 “Uraraka Ochako” from your hand) This character gets Power +3, all other characters in the battle area can’t activate their abilities.
The second team, Iida & Ojiro, has this ability:
[Attack] (This character gets Power -3) Ready this character.
What do I think of these? Well the first card is really good. Having to discard an Uraraka instead of an Aoyama means the card is very playable, since her cards are usually much better than his. The second card, however, I don’t think is that great. Useful if you can clear the opponent’s battle area before they attack, but otherwise you’re looking at a Power 3 attacker.
