I was talking to Jac about this last night but the weirdest thing about Newsies is the fact that they take real people and then make them fictional characters but like... wrong?
Because ok Newsies is a fictional account of a real event, it makes sense that it isn't historically accurate because it's not a historical source it's theatre, but why take random people's names and throw them into different situations?
Why did they make Spot Conlon (mentioned twice by the Sun) and make him the Brooklyn leader when Racetrack Higgins was the most prominent Brooklyn leader? And then take Racetrack Higgins and make him a random Manhattan newsie? Like I get not wanting to fictionalise a real person but why then take that real person and make him a completely different person?
Like you have Davey. He's inspired by Dave Simonds (don't come for me for my spelling there is no correct spelling of his name) but he's a very different person with a different last name and even a different nickname. There's a clear connection between him and this real historical figure but they've separated him enough to make it clear that he is just inspired by him
Then Jack is probably inspired by Jack Sullivan who was a leader in the early days but kinds faded out of relevance, and Annie Kelly (who was actually a grown woman btw idk if people know that). Again, a new character who is clearly inspired by real people but is seperate from them
But then Race and Blink both have real people's names but are??? Completely different???? Like if you're gonna include them at all why do it like that???? /gen what was the reasoning behind this????
(I do also find it a little odd upon further thought that they took the real disabled strike leader - Kid Blink is noted in multiple papers to be blind in one eye - and then replace him with an able bodied lead but I am probably not the right person to talk about that and it honestly deserves its own post)

So I think that the Jacobs family is actually more wealthy than we give them credit for. Now, I'm not saying that they're wealthy, they're still a working class family at the turn of the century, but they are perhaps more comfortable than we tend to portray them as (at least before Mayer's accident)
This is through a combination of every production of Newsies I've seen as well as historical context.
So for a bit of Newsies-based evidence before I dive into the historical context, the various iterations of this musical do imply that the Jacobs family are fairly comfortable. 92sies gives us an insight into their housing, which all things considered is fairly nice. They appear to have a multi-roomed flat to themselves which is not something many families would be able to afford. A lot of the poorest of working class families lived in single rooms in tenements, often sharing with other families or letting rooms out to other workers in order to make more money, so the fact that they have the entire thing to themselves suggests that they don't need that extra income. Had they needed to, they likely would have slept the entire family in the kitchen/living room space and rented the kids' room out. They also keep the apartment incredibly clean, even during what we can assume is an impromptu midweek visit during a time of financial crisis, which implies a degree of free time that many working class families didn't have. For many, weekends were for doing a full clean (because everyone likes living in clean spaces) but midweek many wouldn't have had the time or energy to maintain their space in the way that the Jacobs family does
Now, Les' "my very own bed and indoor terlet" does throw a bit of a spanner in the works of this. However, being able to have and maintain space does not mean they don't live in tenement housing. They almost certainly do live in tenement housing, they are still a working class family in NYC at the turn of the century, they are just likely to be on the upper end of the financial spectrum within those spaces
Furthermore, if we look at costumes we can see that both Jacobs boys tend to wear well fitting, clean clothing, especially when compared to the more ill fitting and dirty clothing of the newsies. This first of all implies that the Jacobs family are able to buy new clothing for their growing children when they need it, but also that they are able to buy clothing specifically for the kids at that point in their lives. They don't need to wear hand me downs or buy clothes too big to allow the kids to grow into them because they have enough financial security to know that when the time comes they will be able to buy new clothes. Once again on the cleanliness factor, they have enough time and resources to keep their clothes clean and nicely pressed whose clothes are generally more rumpled and generally do not look freshly laundered. Time is money and contemporary working class families typically squeezed as much as they could out of their time. The fact that the family (likely Esther lbr) has the time to spend on keeping their clothing laundered to the extend that they do implies that they don't need to use that time for other things
(and I think that makes Davey's costume change in livesies that bit more interesting, yes his clothes help him to fit in with the newsies but he is also wearing a darker colour that is less likely to get visibly dirty and patterns such as his plaid help to disguise wrinkles)
Ok on to more history. This all started because I was interested in why the Jacobs boys were talking about missing school despite it being the middle of July. By the way! From the 1870s NYC's summer holidays spanned most of July and August so considering the fact that the strike took place in the two weeks following the 18th of July 1899 there is literally no reason for Davey to be so stressed about missing school, there is no school happening for him to be missing.
Moving on, I think it's incredibly interesting that the Jacobs boys, especially Davey, were so new to the game. First, we have the fact that neither of them seem particularly well acquainted with the streets of NYC. The streets were the playgrounds, the workplace, and generally the centre of the lives of the city's working class children. Mothers often wanted their boys out of the house because tenements were so crowded and having them in the streets meant the mothers and daughters had more space to move around and get housework done. They typically also wanted their kids to get fresh air and time away from the damp and mold of tenement buildings (another point for nicer accommodation). The fact that Davey and Les are both so unfamiliar with the culture and kids of the streets is both bizarre and an indication that they likely spent most of their lives in a wealthier social sphere. I will say that Les seems more knowledgeable about the streets than Davey does, but it could just be that he's a better social chameleon than his brother because he is still shocked about some major things like the fact that some people don't have an amazing home life. Notable because things like parental deaths are more likely when those parents are working the dangerous jobs that rich people don't want to/don't have to work
Moving on to selling, it's honestly quite weird that Davey (we can assume) has never worked before. It's implied that he's around Jack's age which was pretty old for a working class kid to be entering the workforce. It was incredibly common for kids to sell the evening edition after school, the majority of newsies did not work full time. Yes, many kids did work to support their families by supplementing their parents' income, but many also worked for a little bit of spending money for themselves when their parents couldn't afford to give them a little bit of cash for candy and and cinema tickets and such. The kids who didn't work were the kids whose parents could afford to give them pocket money (a lot of wealthier parents didn't want their kids in professions like news selling, so gave them some of the money they might have earned to keep them off the streets). All that considered, it's really quite strange that the Jacobs brothers have never been involved in any of that.
Shoutout to Jac (@we-are-inevitable ) for listening to me ramble about this but they pointed out that the deviation of the norm this implies for the Jacobs brothers makes them needing to sell a much bigger deal than we may have initially thought. The Jacobs boys are navigating a whole new social sphere and a world they have never really interacted with while pushing their family through a financial crisis, and it would be fun to explore the implications of that more in depth
