“You don’t look like a walking tragedy to me.”
There’s a sarcastic note to Mary’s words that’s a little too sharp for comfort; she sets the newspaper back down on the countertop, gives the girl – twenty-two! twelve years her junior! – another look up and down, then extinguishes her cigarette into the printed counterpart on the front page.
“What are you going to do when they get bored of you, huh?” She bares her teeth in something that’s barely a smile – too aggressive, almost predatory. “Or is that why you came all the way to Gotham?”
there is no rest for a survivor, that’s a misconception. the aftermath isn’t really ‘after’, it’s just more bullshit. different, but just as awful. getting analyzed by every media piece she stumbles across is daunting as running through the woods from a killer. the trees have to stop at some point, but the newspapers keep on printing.
“i’m not pure enough to be a walking tragedy,” jennifer notes as she finds a seat; “if you keep reading, i bet they’ll mention all the parties i attended in college,” is she bitter? well, of course, but that’s better than giving anyone the satisfaction of seeing her break.
“i’d love for them to get bored. nobody wants to hire a model whose face reminds people of death,” jennifer’s laughing, but there’s no amusement behind her eyes.
