Quote
The results of the Chavez government’s economic policies have been a 50% drop in the poverty rate, from 49% of the households in early 1998 to 24% in late 2009. Similarly, the extreme poverty rate dropped more than two-thirds, from 21% of households in 1998 to 6% in late 2009. While most of this drop in poverty is attributable to social policies that benefit the poor, much of it is also traceable to a dramatic drop in unemployment, which fell by nearly half, from 14.5% in early 1999 to around 7% in late 2010. Some countries that pursue neo-liberal economic policies have also achieved lower poverty rates, but usually at the expense of greater inequality. In Venezuela, though, inequality, as measured by the “Gini coefficient,” dropped from 0.49 in 1998 to 0.39 in 2010, one of the lowest levels in Latin America.
An Assessment of Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution at Twelve Years (via foucaultthehaters)
what’s gonna happen now. Venezuela is lucky it’s got a commodity that makes the world work. And they sell some to Cuba at a deeply discounted price. What’s gonna happen to Cuba now.

Not our usual kind of post, but important nonetheless! RIP Hugo

Candy McKenzie - Breakfast in bed
Trojan Repress
In 1977, a raw, young singer from Kilburn, North West London flew to Jamaica to work with a man considered by many to be finest producer Jamaica has ever produced: Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. Despite having previously sung with Keith Hudson and Bob Marley in London, Candy McKenzie was ill prepared for her Black Ark experience, with the cramped, basically equipped studio a world away from those in which she had previously plied her trade.

Augustus Pablo. I slept on his stuff for so many years until one day he just clicked, ever since he's basically the artist/producer I judge all others against!
