Hello, I'm here to talk about HB3. You're probably wondering what HB3 is (since barely anyone's talking about it), to give a basic rundown on what this thing is, HB3 is a law that's similar to KOSA. Except it's for Florida exclusively. It aims to “protect” minors online by making them more unsafe. Like taking away safe spaces and crucial information.

If you live in Florida, don't give up or panic! iirc, it's having legal trouble due to it being unconstitutional. But Don't feel relieved yet, Kansas has done something similar (I'll probably talk about that later)

Now is there anything that we can do? Of course! But we can't call them since it already passed as a law (I think) the most we can do is protest and spread awareness. If you have friends or mutuals in Florida let them know!!

Okay so this morning I saw on the news "the government taking steps to protect children online" and I PANICKED cause I thought it was KOSA, but it wasn't KOSA! It was this thing called Know2Protect. I don't know all the details, but from what I heard on the news (CBS), Know2Protect is basically a program that's meant to TEACH children and adults how to protect themselves online (as opposed to KOSA, which wants to censor the internet). I'm not entirely certain about this thing, but! Know2Protect SOUNDS like it might be the answer to our problem! It's what we wanted, right? For the government to teach people how to protect themselves from online predators instead of censoring the internet?

reminder that the House is not voting on KOSA today! They’re literally just talking about the bill and if it will be a good idea or not iirc. Hearings are different from something being voted on!

Small reminder to stay calm even if the bill does get approved tomorrow.

Remember, the bill still has a very long way to go before it becomes an official law all around the U.S., and even if it does get to the president, there will be a very long 18 month time-frame where we can fight as much as we possibly can in order for it to be revoked (remember all of the other laws and bills in the past that got revoked because of protests).

Listen, I get that you're scared. I get that you're scared of losing everything that you've worked for, and that's okay. But thinking that it's all over by tomorrow if it gets approved is not a very good mindset to have. Remember, the reason why it hasn't gotten approved yet is because we've all been speaking out against it and refusing to back down even when it seems hopeless. Be optimistic. Be confident in everyone around you working with you in order to succeed in not letting these terrible bills pass.

It's not just KOSA you should be fighting against either. There are many bills like the recent FISA ACT and the Earn It Act that are also threats to our rights. Please advocate against those just as much as you've done for KOSA. Let's fight for our futures together as one.

Sadly, it is true that today, 04/10/2024, KOSA has been introduced to the House BUT! That doesn’t mean it’s game over just yet!

Proof:

Friendly reminder that there is much less support for KOSA in the House than the Senate. And even if it does pass the House—God forbid, it’s not over until the President signs it.

Here is the phone number for the Committee that’ll be holding the hearing on April 17th (Use the top number), and of course keep calling your Senators & House Representative.

I know this is scary for a lot of people, but we have to keep fighting. Please spread this around & don’t give up!

Okay, KOSA. This bill will shut one of the most important tools and resources that the queer youth and all queer in general use to find people like them. Find comfort, advice, safety.

Not just that. It will silence all of us who are fighting the suffering and genocide around the world, from Palestine to Papua. And also cut off funding and awareness.

KOSA has been officially introduced in the house as of April 10th, 2024. there is a calling day TODAY, (April 16th, 2024--which is when i made this post) to make it clear that there is opposition to these bills. if you need a script, this useful post by lokiinmediasideblog has scripts for both republican and democrat senators. i personally used this post, and it's beyond helpful. if you're interested on learning more, and/or unable to call your senators, the EFF has a useful page HERE, which imo is the most useful resource on the matter--and has a prefilled message that you can use in order to email your senators for those in the US. other good sites of information that have similar messages in order to email your reps and senators are Stop KOSA, and Bad Internet Bills.

i'm terrified of this. there's precedent for this bill to pass due to bipartisian support, and the fact that bills that align with KOSA have passed in florida, and kansas. even one message to your senator can go a long way. we cannot let this dangerous bill pass.
