Taking a break from animals for a moment.
This story is about my friend Mary. We have been friends for 17 years. In high school, I saw some of the effects of her hereditary disease HAE, her hands or feet swelling to four times their normal size, a painful and disabling process. She would limp or have to be carried around school. She couldn’t write. Once, her intestines swelled and she was hospitalized, near death.
Treatments for her disease were extremely limited. There are more options now and she has been without an attack for years, but only because she has access to treatment several times weekly. Without these treatments? Attacks every 2-3 days. A swelling of her throat or intestines can prove fatal.
Mary is one of my dearest, oldest friends; an incredibly kind and passionate person. There are millions of Marys out there. People who are loved, people who need help. The Affordable Care Act has been a lifeline to so many. Is it perfect? NO. For many it has still remained unaffordable. But that’s why we need to fix it, to replace it, to repair it while keeping in place those protections that have helped people like Mary. No preexisting conditions resulting in exclusion. No lifetime care caps.
Please, if access to healthcare matters to you, if there is someone in your life with chronic illness, with disability, who needs medication or surgery… please share this and pass it on. For people like Mary. For people like her husband, her child, her friends. For everyone who needs these protections, and who will die without them.
