i will literally defend to the death women talking about getting an "ick" about male partners. yeah it’s kind of a dumb term but it serves its purpose. it’s my view that what’s talked about as "getting the ick" is actually looking back, rather than being looked at, often for the first time in a relationship. when you’re not caught up in the performance and charm of your relationship, when you’re a little disengaged, when you’re just looking at the guy. and you start to think … am i attracted to him? have i ever been attracted to him? and so yeah sometimes it’ll be tiny innocuous things. i don’t care if watching her boyfriend order dessert in a restaurant or carry a water bottle or eat messily or cry is the sudden tipping point when she takes a step back, really looks at the guy, and goes "what am i doing? i don’t even like him" like good for her for realizing and getting out. listen to your gut.

there is literally no possible explanation for this quote other than joe wright having a massive embarrassing crush on matthew macfayden which i can’t say i understand but i guess on the basis of lesbian-gay solidarity i support. that said i’m shaming him for letting his dick influence his professional decisions. he looked like a kicked terrier drowned in milk in that film which may make him sufficiently non-threatening to a desperately horny female audience but is fundamentally inconsistent with the source material and a disservice to women. you could have just asked him to dick you down, but i suppose the rituals are intricate.

I'm a firm believer of "write a 100k fic for the one scene you can't get out of your head"
I also firmly believe your readers should never be able to tell which scene it was.

hate to say it, but part of ending the stigma around sexual assault means not assuming every woman blames herself. yes, female socialization encourages it, but that doesn’t make it a given, and the goal of all of these campaigns is to eventually diminish the proportion of women who do blame themselves. it is entirely possible, and increasingly common, for women to experience sexual assault and not feel shame or guilt, which we should be happy about. but instead, there are only so many times you can hear “you know it’s not your fault, right?” before it sounds like “it was your fault”. and there’s only so many times you can hear “don’t blame yourself” before it sounds like “you should blame yourself”. because it feels good to say, doesn’t it? sure, you don’t believe she’s guilty, but you do believe she should feel guilty, so that you can disabuse her of the notion. just something to consider.

when i was in elementary school, girls had to wear jumper dresses or skorts (skirts with the built in soft shorts) and like.. this did not bother me personally in the least. even once they dropped that rule a couple years later i still only wore the jumpers and skorts. but my best friend at that age was miserable. she hated dresses and hated skirts and hated that she couldn’t dress like the boys got to and even though i, personally, could not comprehend why anyone would want to wear khakis (famously the most evil fabric known to man) when they could wear a perfectly comfortable skort, i could still commiserate and understand that it was unfair that she couldn’t wear shorts like the boys. it was still a shit rule, even if i, personally, did not feel restricted by it and didn’t change my behavior once the rules were loosened.
so when i see women who are like "who cares that patriarchal femininity is oppressive and women are required to comply or face consequences — this doesn’t matter because i, personally, do not long for the alternative choices which are withheld from me" i’m like girl i could grasp this at age seven. c’mon now.

"phew, what a relief that what’s unfairly expected of me aligns with what i personally like! who cares about all those other women suffering the consequences anyway?"
Nobody is saying that patriarchal beauty standards dont exist and shouldn't be acknowledged jfc. I understand that I have been socialized to wear things like makeup and men have been socialized to expect that I put effort in. It is not a profound concept. That being said, I love makeup. I can do it in a way that makes me feel powerful and tbh I really don't give a shit about how femininity is "demanded of me" and how I'm brainwashed by patriarchy in my damn day to day you pretentious gnat.
Okay, but like, I’m pretty invested in talking about femininity is demanded of me so you know, I’ll keep talking about it.
