"eat." punctuation comes in the form of a loud thud!, the sound of a flowery dinner plate laden with spaghetti and meatballs connecting with solid mahogany. she'd poked and prodded @guttersniper down towards a table in the back corner of the restaurant, closer to the office than to the kitchen and main space, which grace has unoficially dubbed to be the coziest of sections here at tonnarello's (in reality, it's just the farthest from the prying eyes of the staff.)

the lump in her cardigan pocket turns out to be a can of coke, a little warmer than the serving suggestion suggests, but it's slid across the table all the same. "i'll be offended if you don't, kiddo." nonchalant shrug sees her shoulders, already dramatically padded and clad in bright red plaid, rise and fall.

"you've just missed my mother-in-law," she plants a glass of red down on the table right in front of @midcenturies, a little fuller than it ought to be, but it matches the one held in her claw-grip near identically. "consider yourself lucky." she's not stupid enough to badmouth the senior signora manzoni to anyone in her circle, but sometimes it's just so damn hard to keep it all in, to beat it down like she does everything else.

"even in my own home, the woman tries to banish me from the kitchen." it's a gripe that cuts deep and dates back to olden times, to put it simply, and not one that grace is bound to forget any time soon. "anyway," she heaves a sigh, and times it pefectly with her drop into the dining room chair, leather squeaking with all the movement. "there's cannolis in there if you want them. or maybe the kids would like 'em."

"reverend. what a pleasant surprise." a little lacking in her usual sincerity, but then, maybe that's just what happens when he seems to drop in on her unexpectedly so very often. (here. at the funeral home. there's been the odd time after mass that their paths have crossed and she isn't entirely sure if it's coincidence or not.)

the house is in order, at least. no broken vases, no conveniently placed framed photos, no new rugs. it's a pleasant side effect of vince being away for the week, chaperoning a school trip up to albany, out of her hair and her space. nora wonders if @midcenturies is somehow aware of the fact; either way, it's for the best. the few times they've encountered each other have not exactly gone swimmingly for anyone involved. "would you, ah, like to come in?"

matthew's gospel. it's one of momma's favourites, something she'd recognise in a heartbeat. tugs on the old heartstrings, even if only for a minute or two.

another atheistic cliche. elijah fights the temptation to say so.

he gestures just beyond the tent to where members of the ministry are doling out milk, bread, and bowls of potato soup. his is not a rich band of disciples, it's true, and the portions they offer are meager. but judging from the eagerness of the those in line and scattered among the grass eating, it’s more nutrition than has been seen in these parts for some time.

she's mid-sentence (mid-ramble is, in all honesty, more accurate) when she's so rudely interrupted, and it throws her for a loop. her gaze moves from leera, down to her own self, clad near entirely in earth tone corduroys, very briefly down to her boots, which are sufficiently scuffed, and then back up at leera, brow cocked almost quizzically. "––clothes?" a stellar answer. the exact type of answer, in fact, one should give to someone with as daunting an aura as the one standing in front of her now. [ really, eleanor, excellent decision! ] "is there something about my attire that offends you, miss daymont?" it's hard to keep the amusement from leaking into her voice, so she makes no effort to, even if she doesn't find this scenario to be particularly funny.

hand rummages around the depths of her coat pocket for a minute before pulling out an uncharacteristically ornate cigarette case – not hers, by any means, but it's got four left, so it's still of some worth to her. lighter is pulled after a second rummage; similarly, not hers. "what, as in the deadly sin?" click, spark, puff. "i'd call it being a good performer. nothing too prideful about that at all."

it might be worthwhile to question whether tim is the best person to answer that question and soothe that worry, but she's not about to go around advertising her bad qualities any further. "do y'ever miss it? church basement?"

nettie hums in agreement. "far cry from daddy's church basement, too. sometimes i think i miss it — the church basement — but then i peek around the curtain at all them people, and my heart jumps right up into my throat, like its giddy or something."

she eyes tim, almost worried. "you think that's pride talking?"

like a balloon, she deflates on the exhale, posture sagging into a slouch. "but that's just the thing." the last few dregs of her own wine are downed, liquid courage in its finest form.

"i'm so upset all the time, too, so i'm just going around angry and sad and jealous and–– and being really, really awful company." self-awareness seems to come out of nowhere with a gut-punch. well, closer to a gentle slap, really. she's not that introspective a person. "i never have been very good at bottling anything up."

beatríz feels the same way. perhaps the difference between them is that she knows well how to conceal it.

she watches ginny intently, a glass of red wine at her lips. "i didn't mean to upset you."

"no– maybe." chin lifts defiantly as though she is anywhere close to confident in her ability, and not merely flailing semi-successfully through life (and also time. and space.) "yes. ... what if it is?"
