DIVERSITY INITIATIVE
The ABC Disney Diversity Program has a proven track record of cracking open the door to Hollywood for talented minority writers.  In this program writers become employees of Disney -ABC Television Group, earning a salary of $50,000 per year plus benefits.  The program is designed to expose deserving writers to key executives, producers and literary representatives in an effort to develop a writer’s career.  Additionally, participants have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a current programming or development executive and create spec scripts for the current broadcast season.  The ultimate goal is to prepare writers for full-time staff positions in the television division.
NBC Diversity Initiative for Writer
NBC boasts of cultivating diversity within its writing staffs on Primetime Series.  But the network takes it a step further by funding diverse staff writer positions for all scripted NBC primetime series.  The NBC Diversity Initiative for Writers feeds the pool of staff writers.  The initiative provides writers the opportunity to have their work read and evaluated with the hope that it will open the door to a future relationship with NBC.
The Nickelodeon Writing Fellowship was developed to broaden the network’s outreach efforts.  It is designed to attract and develop staff writers with diverse backgrounds and experiences.  There is a  salaried position for up to one year offering hands-on experience writing spec scripts and pitching story ideas in both live action and animation television.  This fellowship allows writers an opportunity to nurture relationships with creators, network executives, line producers, head writers, showrunners and story editors.
When Robert Dinero launched the Tribeca Film Festival, inclusion was key.  Tribeca All Access (TAA) fuels that philosophy by providing both established and emerging filmmakers with unprecedented access to industry professionals.  It offers fledgling filmmakers an opportunity to establish contacts, gain knowledge and develop  the confidence needed to make their films.  TAA gives grants, one-on-one meetings with industry representatives, career development workshops and informational panels to ten exceptional filmmakers from under-represented communities.
The Urbanworld Film Festival partnered with BET to launch a search for the top screenwriters of color. BET  is offering hopefuls an  opportunity to present TV length film scripts to be considered for airing.  These scripts must present an original idea for a potential TV series and be between 35 and 45 pages in length. The writer of the best script will receive a grand prize of $5,000.
DIRECTING
Disney/ABC Directing Program
Launched in 2001, the Disney/ABC Directing Program focuses on increasing the number of episodic directing opportunities on ABC series for women and minorities and is one of the longest running programs of its kind in the entertainment industry. The Los Angeles-based program affords selected participants the opportunity to shadow veteran episodic directors. Participants will be paid $1,000 per week to shadow a DGA director on an episode from prep to post. The duration of the individual’s participation is at the discretion of ABC executives, executive producers and/or episodic directors.
The submission period for the Directing Program opens the first Monday in October of odd calendar years and closes the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. When the submission period is open, applications are available on the Disney/ABC Directing Program website.
Fox Global Directors Initiative
The Fox Global Directors Initiative (FDI), established in July 2014, will bring 20 selected participants to Fox Studios in Los Angeles, CA to take part in a four-to-six week directors lab, where they will attend interactive lab sessions with showrunners, directors, and creative executives from various Fox productions. Out of the 20 participants, five will then be invited to become FDI Fellows and will receive a mentor within the Fox organization, a fellowship stipend, a grant to develop and direct a three to five minute short, and the opportunity to be considered for a deal with a Fox entertainment business.
FDI is by nomination only. Nominations can be made by agencies, management companies, and a select number of organizations.
HBOAccess Program
HBOAccess is a program that provides project development, mentorship, and master classes to diverse directors. Selected candidates will be paired with an HBO development executive who will serve as his/her mentor throughout a four-week session in June, and HBO will provide a series of Master Classes taught by HBO executives and creative talent.  At the end of the four-week session, filmmakers will be given a budget to create short form content for HBO to be shot in late summer.
Upon completion of the development process, each project will be considered for production as a 10-15 minute film or a series of webisodes to air on various HBO platforms including, but not limited to HBOGo, HBO service, HBO’s Youtube channel, HBO.com, film festivals, charity screenings, and other outlets.

NBC Universal Directing Fellowship
The NBC Universal Directing Fellowship program is designed to take directors accomplished in their respective fields (features, commercials and/or music videos) and have them work alongside episodic television directors. While in the program, directors are assigned to shadow up to three episodes of one (or more) NBCU scripted show from production prep to post. The director is responsible for working alongside the show's director(s) in every aspect of a director's responsibilities.

Sony Pictures Television Diverse Directors Program
The SPT Diverse Directors Program, established in May 2014, will bring 20 semi-finalists to the Sony Lot in Culver City, CA to take part in an intensive episodic directing workshop and attend networking events with industry professionals.  Three finalists will then be invited to shadow episodic directors on various series and will be provided a weekly stipend when actively shadowing.  Participants may be invited back to direct an episode of a scripted SPT series the following season.

Warner Bros. Director Workshop
The Warner Bros. Directors’ Workshop is designed to give aspiring and diverse directors the chance to break into primetime TV. Launched in 2014, the workshop aims to prepare directors from other disciplines — feature films, music video, commercials — for the transition to episodic TV.  A 12-week master class teaches the skills essential for excelling through pre-production, shooting, and post-production. Additional optional components include cinematography workshops, acting classes and the opportunity to shadow directors on an episode of a WBTV show.

AFI CONSERVATORY OUTREACH: YOUNG WOMEN IN FILM
Two years ago, our Fellows thought to start a partnership with a local High School in which our Fellows would teach storytelling and filmmaking to a few young women who were interested. The program (which included Fellow-led workshops and lectures) lasted about 5 weeks and the end result was that they were able to shoot their own stories and present them in a final screening to their peers.
This year, with the help of DWW and the Institute. The Office of Fellow Affairs is expanding on this great opportunity and have partnered with the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation (thank you to DWW!) who has helped us find another school to participate! We’ve turned this into a seven-week, hands-on program where high schoolers are writing, directing, shooting, editing, and premiering their own short films!
Many thanks to all the Fellows and Alumni who supported and contributed to this great program!

Fellow Affairs Resources
Immigrants and Immigration: A Guide for Entertainment Professionals is a resource for writers, producers, directors, and creators in the entertainment industry who are crafting narratives about the immigrant experience in our country today. With immigration policies and topics of importance constantly changing, the immigration landscape can be difficult to navigate.
The guide is a 19-page brief that defines key terms (“blanket waiver,” “mixed-status family”) and breaks down current key issues in immigration law, including the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the U visa for victims of violent crimes.
The full guide can be downloaded here at: https://defineamerican.com/ent/guide/

A Message on the Repeal of DACA
AFI Fact Sheet Regarding Rescission of DACA
The Drumpf Administration announced on September 5, 2017, that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has been rescinded and no new applications will be approved.
Limited renewals of DACA status will be allowed as detailed below. However, unless the protections afforded by DACA are restored in a timely way by Congress, many members of our community will be significantly impacted by this decision.
The following fact sheet is designed to help you understand what the DACA repeal means and how it affects you.
DACA APPLICATIONS AND RENEWALS
DACA initial requests and associated applications for Employment Authorization Documents that have been accepted by DHS before September 5, 2017, will be processed on a case-by-case basis. New DACA applications filed on or after this date will be rejected.
If your DACA status or associated Employee Authorization Documents expire prior to March 5, 2018, and you wish to renew them for another two-year term, you must submit a renewal application to DHS by October 5, 2017. Renewal applications will be processed and evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If your application is renewed, it will remain in place until it expires.
If your DACA status or Employee Authorization Document expires on or after March 6, 2018, you will not be allowed to renew your application; however, your DACA status and Employee Authorization Document will remain valid until their expiration date.
ENROLLMENT, TUITION AND FINANCIAL AID
AFI enrollment and tuition policies are not based on DACA status and will not be impacted if DACA is repealed. For more information about financial aid programs, click here.
TRAVEL
Previously a DACA recipient who sought to temporarily leave and re-enter the United States for humanitarian, educational, or employment purposes was required to apply for advance parole. This is no longer the case and no new applications for advance parole will be approved following DHS’s September 5, 2017, DACA repeal.
If you are out of the country on advance parole, DHS advises that you should be allowed to return so long as you strictly comply with the validity period on the previously approved application.
Be further advised, however, that the September 5, 2017 DHS action on DACA states that U.S. Customs and Immigration retain the authority “it has always had and exercised in determining the admissibility of any person presenting at the border and the eligibility of such persons for parole.”
If you require assistance, you should consult with legal counsel. A list of nonprofit organizations that provide free legal services to immigrants residing in California can be found here.
SUPPORT
Support services are available and are ready to assist students in need. For available AFI support services, please contact Fellow Affairs at [email protected]
If you are in need of legal support services, many nonprofit organizations in your area provide legal services free of charge to immigrants residing in California. A comprehensive list of these legal providers can be found here. AFI also has worked with immigration attorneys and will be more than happy to bring an immigration attorney on campus to answer questions you may have.
If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

GRANTS: STUDENT PRODUCTION GRANTS
Past Recipients:
https://www.caucusfoundation.org/recipients/grant_recip_past.html Grants are now open to all students enrolled in an accredited school: Purpose of the Grants: To assist worthy students in completing their student thesis film, TV program, video or interactive projects. The award will provide completion money after other means of fundraising have been exhausted. This program is intended to combat the lack of diversity in content and creative people in our industry.
Rationale for the Grants: The Caucus recognizes its responsibility to take action to promote diversity behind the camera in our industry. We look to the accredited film, television, media programs at our universities and colleges as the source of the talented writers, directors and producers of the future. While scholarships are becoming more and more plentiful, support for students in completing their portfolio project is scarce. These projects serve as a calling card for entry in the industry. Further, the selection and identification process will, of itself, validate and recognize young talent and provide a source of mentors as they make the transition from student to industry professional. Eligibility: Applicants must be registered in an accredited undergraduate or graduate degree program that requires the student to complete a thesis project in film, television program, video or interactive project for their degree and must be either the producer or director of the film. Applicant must also be a US Citizen. The student must be enrolled at an accredited University, College or Conservatory at time of submission or has graduated within three months of the due date of application.
Submissions: May be a structured film as currently understood, or TV Program of any genre i.e. game show, reality program, situation comedy, variety program, documentary or any commonly produced form in contemporary broadcasting including webisodes.
Criteria for selection for an Award: Demonstrated financial need. Students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be given extra consideration. The creative strength of the project as determined by the selection committee. The completeness and feasibility of the production plan. The completeness and reliability of the financing plan. Additional weight will be given to students who have demonstrated diligence in fundraising from other sources including in-kind contributions.Foreign language films must have English subtitles.Amount of Award: The award can range from $1,000 to a maximum of $10,000 based on the completion needs of the individual project. However, no one grant can amount to more than 40% of the amount awarded at that session.
Timing of Awards: Awards will be made twice a year: January 15th for Round 1 and June 1st for Round 2.
Application Procedure: Students must submit all materials by January 15th for Round 1 and June 1st for Round 2.  Apply online at http://goo.gl/forms/qkDISJPfFE. Information necessary to apply online will be:
ApplicationStoryline Synopsis or Program Idea (2-3 sentences)A Final Script, TV Production Script or Treament for DocumentaryFinal BudgetCurrent Expenditure & Costs to complete budgetFinancing PlanShooting/Post ScheduleCrew list and Student Status of eachRough Cut on a video file (H.264 format). Since the grant is to assist in completion monies for your film, a rough cut is required.
Applicant Statement of IntentionProof of Financial need University, College or ConservatoryFaculty/Mentor Letter of Support on letterheadTransfer of Funds: Funds or in-kind services will be transferred to the student based upon certification by the teacher/mentor that agreed upon markers have been reached (i.e. start of principal photography, completion of photography, locked cut or delivery of answer print or program status, pre-production, post production, editing, sweetening, mix).
Prints: Award winners must supply the Caucus Foundation with three DVDs of the completed/final project AND a video file (H.264 format) which the Caucus will be able to screen at Caucus or Caucus Foundation events.
Credit: The Caucus for Producers, Writers & Directors Foundation and any other Endowment/Named Fund will have a credit on the film as a financial supporter in size and prominence compatible with its contribution to the total funding. Application Information: http://goo.gl/forms/qkDISJPfFE
Compression Guidelines for Rough Cuts: Codec: H.264: Caucus accepts most major video codecs, but for best results we recommend using H.264. If you're uploading High Definition (HD) video, choose the High Profile H.264 setting instead of Main Profile. Advanced H.264 settings: To make your uploads extra smooth, choose the following advanced settings whenever possible. Closed GOPCABAC (to reduce your file size)Codecs that will not work: G2M2, G2M3, Canopus HQFrame rate: 24, 25, or 30 FPS (Constant): frame rates of 24 (or 23.976), 25, and 30 (or 29.97). It's best to encode your final video at the same frame rate as your footage. If there is an option for key frames, choose the same value you used for frame rate. Important: Always choose "constant" frame rate instead of "variable" frame rate.Bit rate: 2,000 - 5,000 kbit/s (SD) / 5,000 - 10,000 kbit/s (720p HD) : Bit rate (aka data rate) controls both the visual quality of the video and its file size. In most video editors, this is measured in kilobits per second (kbit/s). When you have the option, choose a "variable" bit rate and set the target to at least 2,000 kbit/s for standard definition (SD) video or 5,000 kbit/s for HD.Resolution: 640 pixels wide (SD) or 1280 pixels wide (HD): Common resolutions for SD video include 640 x 480 px (4:3 aspect ratio) and 640 x 360 px (16:9 aspect ratio). The most common setting for HD video is 1280 x 720 px (16:9 aspect ratio). 1920 x 1080 px is the most common resolution for 1080p video.
Audio Settings: Audio Codec: AAC-LC (Advanced Audio Codec) For best results, we recommend using AAC-LC (low complexity) for the audio codec. Data rate: 320 kbit/s For best results, encode your audio at constant rate of 320 kbit/s.
Sample rate: 48 kHz For best results, set your audio sample rate to 48 kHz. If your working setting is already less than or equal to 48 kHz, leave it as is. Inquiries: For speed of response we strongly urge that questions or inquiries be directed to the Foundation at [email protected].

When we were looking into the history of cats and film, we were surprised to learn that  “cats have been popping up and [being] used quite regularly (and consistently) throughout film history. It's interesting to see how filmmakers have (at times) struggled with and creatively innovated ways to capture and portray cats in their films." Who knew cat videos started back in 1894 with Thomas Edison?
BBAWC and Brooklyn Cat Cafe have worked to rescue and adopt over 1000 cats from the cafe since opening in May of 2016. As Brooklyn's first Cat Cafe and the only cat cafe run and operated by a non-profit in New York City, we are proud of the outreach and education we provide to animal lovers and those interested in helping animals in our community.
Help us celebrate the wide range of portrayals of cats in film with all activities raising money to help Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition (BBAWC) and the Brooklyn Cat Cafe's animal rescue efforts. The festival will kick off with an award gala and screening on April 13th.
