"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."
That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.
It does NOT mean
That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing
That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)
That you need to kill off characters (??? what)
That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones
That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to
The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.
The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.
"What's wrong?!" Okoye asks, rising from the dining chair.
"It's Kiyoshi," Zyanya gives Manaia to Fen. "He hasn't come back. He said he'd be home hours ago."
"Kiyoshi?" Fen exchanged a worried glance with Okoye and then to Zyanya. "I put baby sleep, okay? Sit." Fen walks out of the dining room with Manaia.
"Did he say where he was going?" Okoye pulls a chair out and reaches for Zyanya's hand guiding her to sit.
"His mother is moving back to Mt. Komorebi, and he has been assisting her with the relocation."
"I see, drink this while it's still warm," Okoye said as she set down a gray mug adorned with rhinos. It had been hers, but Zyanya had grown fond of it.
"Thank you, mama," Zyanya inhales deeply, "Peppermint, my favorite." Her thick, finely arched brows wrinkled. "Where is Baba?"
"He is—" Okoye catches herself and glances at the clock. It shows 10:30 PM, a time not out of the ordinary for Attuma, who often volunteered to help clean the facility. "Just a moment," Okoye gets her phone from the kitchen island and sends a text to Shuri. It was a long shot, but she needed to check some boxes off.
O: "Shuri, sister, do not be alarmed. Is Namor at home?"
After a minute or so, dots appeared in the portal.
Sh: "Sisi! I was just about to text you as well. His location indicated he was at the center two hours ago, and it appears to be his current location still."
O: Attuma's as well. I will handle it do not worry. Please get some rest.
"Mom?" Zyanya calls out softly. Okoye hadn't realized she was pacing, eyes fixed for any sign from her husband's icon.
"What is it, sweetie?" She threads her fingers through Zyanya's hair.
Taking a deep breath, Zyanya asks, "Do you think they're together? It seems like too much of a coincidence."
Okoye pauses to think, then requests to see Zyanya's phone. With slight hesitation, Zyanya obliges. "Show me Kiyoshi's last contact," Okoye instructs. Zyanya scrolls through her contacts and finds it. As she hands over the phone, curiosity about her mother's intentions grows within her.
"I remember seeing this on a show once; they pressed the contact's picture, and it displayed their location—if they had chosen to share it."
"I believe he has. Oh, my Bast! It never occurred to me to try that," Zyanya exclaims, covering her face in dismay. "How could I be so foolish?"Okoye strokes Zyanya's arm.
The screen finally loads baiting for the mother and daughter's attention. Kiyoshi's icon emerges beside a body of water. Zyanya, gripped by fear, looks at her mother. Okoye instantly identifies the place.
"The Lakehouse."
"Xolani, you will have to keep watch tonight."
"Why me, baba? I don't know the guy. Let Zuma do it."
"Your brother will kill him, and that will only complicate matters further than they already are."
"Baba, I can hear you!"
"Can we just put him in a room? He is already tied up." Xo pointed out.
"You still have not told me where they are."
"I will say this: the men of this family consider it a getaway."
"A getaway? Like a vacation home?"
"Yes, a vacation from their responsibilities." Okoye sucks her teeth.
Okoye opens the door. "You are now responsible for your grandmother and Manaia," she says. Zyanya nods in agreement, "It's best if you sleep on the couch; your chichi has been hiding sweets in her robe lately, which isn't good for her blood sugar."
"I won't let you down, Mother. I'll make sure to check Chichi's pockets," Zyanya responds firmly.

Rafa’s been asking you for weeks. Come smoke, carnale, come on. I have something to show you.
Soon, you told him. I’m busy with school, work, I have to pick my Abuela up from church—I’m the only one who can drive her, remember?
They weren’t made up excuses, even if he thought they might’ve been. You didn’t like it either, having no time for him, but it’s how it went. How it is. He dropped out of school, never made it to college. You did. It gives you different markers now, different structures to shape the friendship around. When you were classmates it was easy, natural: before class, in class, after class. Simple. There you were, there he was. Now, you have to pencil him in like any other obligation.
He isn’t an obligation. You try not to let him feel like one.
no matter how terrible my day is. i can always end my day in bed imagining fictional characters making out sloppy style and fucking raw. and that's beautiful. there's some good in this world mister frodo and it's worth fighting for
Any time somebody argues that you should avoid the use of obvious pop culture references and current slang in prose fiction in order to avoid "dating" the text, I'm reminded that our primary evidence for when several of Shakespeare's plays were written is that their dialogue quotes specific pieces of contemporary popular media, and that there's strong evidence many of the words he's credited by modern authorities with inventing are literally just contemporary youth slang. Like, if it's good enough for Shakespeare it's good enough for me, buddy!

Senior pets have a hard time getting adopted. The likelihood of adoption is only 25% compared to 60% for a younger dog. Unfortunately, this is often due to prejudice. I want to raise awareness with this comic (and also get back to my roots, which I haven't really managed to do yet). But I want to start uploading more regularly again. Thank you for your patience so far.
