personal commentary: amidst all the “hair color does not matter” takes, i have to admit that at this point i’m personally not yet ready to let go of my attachment to the characters’ original hair and eye colors. i’m sure i’ll get over it in time cos (1) i’m old lmao (2) the image i have in my head of the book characters can coexist with the series’ interpretation and adaptation (3) the kids seem to exude the right energy and the author has been very adamant about this (4) i understand if they decide not to do any bleaching/dying procedures on the kids’ hair because, well, they’re kids! and the concern that bleach might damage leah’s hair is definitely valid (trust me i know cos i bleach my hair a lot), but it’ll be way easier and less damaging to dye walker’s hair black so i hope they still consider that option at least... (also re: the eyes, i’m still hoping they find a way to translate the original eye colors from book,to screen as long as it’s safe for the kids, so that’s assuming they don’t have any adverse reactions to contact lenses like daniel radcliffe did while playing harry potter or it’ll be done through editing or something idk)

initially, i wasn’t really sold on the new cast announcements. or at least one. and thatttttt was annabeth

the reason why was because she’s the one character i liked that i felt like i looked like, and that was strong and smart and someone i could actually use as a role model and connect with! like hey!!! that looks like me!!! i can be Her!!!!

what im realizing is im grown now. im a whole ass adult. and now it’s time for a whole new generation of girls to have someone strong and smart that they can look up to and see themselves in. Leah Jeffries is gonna kill it and inspire a new generation of kids who can see themselves in a character that defies so many negative stereotypes of women. some other kids get the same joy i did and get to say “that’s me!!! That can be me!!!” while they’re looking at annabeth on the screen and I’m so happy for them

change is hard for some people, especially when you’ve had a certain image in your head for 10+ years. i think… hesitancy is to be expected? but just know, Leah Jeffries is gonna kick ass.

side note; if you’re mad solely because of her race being different but you’re not mad about Grover’s race being different or Percy being blonde, then idk what to tell u that’s just problematic all together lMFAO

I don't understand the desperation to make the show's version of Annabeth blonde when it wouldn't make sense. Like, the "dumb blonde" trope only applies to white people with naturally blonde hair. In my opinion, her being black fits the point Riordan was trying to make about Annabeth being underestimated due to her appearance just as well, and more fitting for the time period we're in. Like, I have never heard someone bring up the dumb blonde trope in 2022, but black girls are still seen as less intelligent than their white counterparts.

Also, the gray eyes are unnecessary because it never really made sense for Athena to affect her appearance when the gods have no DNA.
