Enjoying mostly contemporary or modern works of literature is like enjoying fashion trends without actually enjoying the clothes, fabrics, texture, and origin. It’s the same for all creative works, even music and painting. Your foundation for understanding the essence of the thing can’t solely be formed by what is produced in your lifetime.

Honestly the whole “the most successful people are those that lied and manipulated their way and success is linear with evil” is a very sexy story to tell and there’s some truth to it. …But also for every nasty successful person there’s like 1000 horrible monsters who are their own worst enemies, who only act normally due to laws, social norms and surveillance/fear of getting caught….so they never reach their potential to act out…..and there’s people who end up successful, or just relatively stable because they have touched so many people in positive ways. Idk if karma is real but I am definitely less cynical than most people.
