Exdergi + Poetry Scores @ CI 2011

Exdergi (Istanbul, TR) & Poetry Scores (St. Louis, USA) @ Contemporary Istanbul 2011
This year, during the Contemporary Istanbul art fair held between the 24th-27th of November 2011, Exdergi will be hosting the screenings of Poetry Scores’ surrealist silent zombie film “Blind Cat Black” based on the poems of Turkish poet Ece Ayhan. Exdergi will also introduce the artistic collaborations between St. Louis based arts organization Poetry Scores and Istanbul based contemporary art project initiative led by Ipek Tuna and Ali Riza Esin.
Exdergi?
Exdergi is an online magazine on contemporary art, culture and literature. Published quarterly in pdf format, the magazine is designed and edited by Ali Riza Esin and managed by Ipek Tuna. Exdergi is a non-profit publication supported by volunteers such as writers, poets, artists, scholars, academicians, etc. all known and respected in their area of expertise as well as giving opportunities and providing space to amateurs to express themselves. Exdergi recently joined the Alternative Media Festival organized by the daily Yeşil Gazete of Green Party in Turkey and is invited by SALT gallery to 90 project held during the Becoming Istanbul event.
Poetry Scores?
Poetry Scores is an arts organization in the United States that translates poetry into other contemporary media, such as music, visual art and film. Aiming to enrich via various mediums the relations between American and international poetry, one project was Blind Cat Black; Murat Nemet-Nejat’s English translation of Turkish poet Ece Ayhan’s poems. Setting the poems to music, releasing a CD and hosting an Art Invitational, Poetry Scores also made a surrealist silent movie to the poems. Starting a new Sister City program where artists and art institutions of both sides commit to working more closely, Poetry Scores recently declared kinship to Istanbul.
Contemporary Istanbul?
The sixth edition of Contemporary Istanbul will take place from 24th to 27th of November 2011. As the most extensive modern and contemporary art event in Turkey, Contemporary Istanbul aims to promote the cultural and artistic life of Turkey. For four days, Contemporary Istanbul is hosting national and international galleries, artists from all over the world, collectors, museum directors, curators, art critics, members of press and art lovers at Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Center (ICEC) and Istanbul Convention Center. And in addition to the main event, Contemporary Istanbul is organizing through the year several side events and art projects such as conferences, exhibitions with the aim of contributing to the country's contemporary art development.
Collaborations and Sister City Program
Through Ipek Tuna’s efforts (and others), Poetry Scores’ musical score to Blind Cat Black has become fairly well known in the Istanbul creative community, and our movie Blind Cat Black has now been screened in Istanbul, Ankara and Canakkale, the poet Ece Ayhan’s home town. Ipek Tuna now has introduced us to the artist Tunca Subaşı; co-founder of Sanatorium Artist Initiative, who is working with us on our second movie based on an American poem, Go South for Animal Index by Stefene Russell and is making art for our 2011 Art Invitational. This productive working relationship, and others like it with artists in other cities, has inspired Poetry Scores to start a new Sister City program, where we officially declare kinship to a city and commit ourselves to working more closely with artists and institutions in that city. At our 2011 Art Invitational in November, we will announce this program and recognize Istanbul as our first Sister City. Ipek Tuna already has agreed to chair a translation committee to translate into Turkish the English-language poems we score, starting with Go South for Animal Index. As we finish movies to these poems, we will then edit subtitled Turkish editions and release these movies in Istanbul, again starting with Go South for Animal Index, which we aim to premiere in St. Louis and Istanbul in July 2012.
Moving forward, we anticipate working with artists in Istanbul to stage Art Invitationals in Istanbul, with musicians in Istanbul to score poems, and with actors in Istanbul to work on movies. We expect this Sister City relationship to produce much new creative work shared between artists in various media working in Istanbul and our creative core in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.
