in chapter 11 of the raven king (thanksgiving), neil says, ‘kevin was staring at andrew like he’d seen a ghost’. i’ve always kind of wondered what that meant, but now with the added perspective of tsc, and all the parallels between andrew & jean … maybe the ‘ghost’ kevin’s seeing here is jean’s. and the implications of that- jean says in tsc that ‘even kevin didn’t know the full story, only the jagged half-lie riko fed him’, so jean doesn’t think kevin knows the truth about the ‘rumors’. but what if he does? what if when kevin heard andrew say ‘don’t ask what’ and ‘you know better’, he finally realized: riko lied. and kevin should have known better than to believe him.

all of the jean/kevin implications are giving kevins "its easier to be straight" a whole different meaning. fml

it’s so interesting how Jean consistently calls Neil a child even tho they’re the same age. As if Jean believes Neil has the innocence that was stolen from him when he arrived at Evermore. And I can see how that’d make sense to Jean because Neil’s mother allowed him ignorance through withholding information. That by not telling Neil about the Moriyamas, he didn’t have to see himself as property, that he could learn to defy and run rather than submit to his fate. And while Neil was subjected to a different brand of cruelty, Jean can still feel a bit wistfully bitter about the boy who had someone care enough about him to defy the yakuza no matter the cost when he was given up so easily
