Altsasu: one year later
On October 15th 2016, there was a bar fight in Altsasu. Some young people from the village ended up having a brawl with 2 Guardia Civiles and their girlfriends.
Before we go anywhere further, just know that Euskadi - and we know Altsasu belongs to Nafarroa, but it’s very close to it - is the #1 place in the EU with most policial presence, and that Guardia Civiles earn 600€ extra for working in Euskadi & Nafarroa because of the “danger of terrorism”. This means Guardia Civiles from all over Spain are eager to come here, like in this case: one of the Guardia Civiles was from València and the other one from Córdoba.
At first, it was almost the whole town of Altsasu who beat them: between 40-50 people. Then, the number went down to 30. Later, there were only between 20-25 people beating the Guardia Civiles. In the incident report made by the own Guardia Civil, just 8 people were mentioned - 6 of them voluntarily went to declare and tell their version - and an organized lynching was immediately dismissed.
In fact, both the bar owner and two waitresses declared that the fight didn’t take place inside the bar, but outside, where they found the injured men.
But what did that “brutal aggression” that “shall not remain upunished” according to President Rajoy do to the Guardia Civiles? Minor injuries, a broken ankle and a hurt lip.
Since the young people of Altsasu knew the “victims” were Guardia Civiles - which is actually not surprising in a little town - the Minister of Inner Affairs considered it was “not a kale borroka incident, but a crime of hatred” as it is now included in the new Penal Code. After this statement by the Government, COVITE (Association of terrorism victims) accussed the young people of Altsasu of terrorism and crimes of hatred.
Do you see how fast this is growing? You ain’t seen nothing yet!
The beaten Guardia Civiles became heroes and recieved medals and all, and even people got arrested for making jokes about them on Facebook.
The 8 arrested people declared in the National Audience, that saw no case and sent it back to the Navarrese Audience, that ended up seeing no crime of terrorism. Ah, but that’s not the result the Government expected, so the case was brought back again to the National Audience, where public prosecutor asks for 375 years in prison (all punishments combined) and won’t let the accused bring any witness. Let’s keep in mind that for a broken ankle and a hurt lip, they’re asking for 10 [individual] years more in prison than for killing and burning children, and 38 [individual] years more than for raping and killing a young woman.
Besides, the accused claim that the judge who will judge them is married to a Guardia Civil. Unbiased for sure.
Tomorrow a demonstration to support them - they’ve been imprisoned all this time - will take place in Iruña.
We hope you share this with everyone you know because this is far from insane.
