Four Loves Challenge: The Golden Bird
The Golden Bird is a fairy tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. The translation I listened to is available in audio format here (it's the first fairy tale in this compilation) and available for reading here. @inklings-challenge
Synopsis: The youngest son of a gardener is sent to find a golden bird for the king after his two older brothers failed to do so. He shows compassion to a fox whom his brothers disdained, and the fox helps him on his quest.
The fox tells him to carry away the bird in a wooden cage and not in the golden cage beside it. The youth fails to heed the fox's words. He is caught and sentenced to death unless he can find a golden horse.
The fox tells him not to replace the horse's old, leather saddle with a golden one. But the youth thinks the horse deserves the golden saddle. He is caught and sentenced to death unless he can find a princess.
The fox tells him that when he meets the princess, he should not let her bid her father farewell. But the youth is moved by her tears and lets her. The king forbids him from leaving with her unless he digs away a certain hill. He works for her for seven days, making little progress. Then the fox comes to his aid.
From this point onward, the young man follows the fox's instructions. Thus, he's able to run away with the princess, the horse, and the bird.
Then the fox asks the young man to kill him. He refuses. Despite this the fox gives him some more good counsel, telling him not to ransom anyone from the gallows, and to sit by no river.
The young man then comes across two men at the gallows and learns they're his brothers. Despite their cruelty, he ransoms them. He then sits with them by a nearly dry riverbed, and they push him in and steal the bird, the horse, and the princess.
They take them to the palace and take credit for the youngest brother's deeds. The bird does not sing, the horse does not eat, and the princess weeps.
The fox comes to the young man's aid again and tells him to disguise himself as a poor man to enter the palace. As soon as he does, the bird begins to sing, the horse begins to eat, and the princess ceases weeping. After the king's death, he is made his heir.
Sometime later, the fox meets him again and asks him to kill him. Moved by the fox's tears he does so. Then the fox turns into a man and is revealed to be the princess's long-lost brother.
Types of Love:
I think this fairy tale can be categorized under all four types.
Philia: For the compassion of the young man towards the fox. For the fondness of the bird, the horse, and the princess towards the young man. And, for the fox's faithfulness toward the young man despite his many errors.
Eros: For the love between the young man and the princess.
Storge: For the fox's love for his sister.
Agape: For the fox's willingness to give up his life to be reunited with his family.
