i know a lot of people are going to think the takeaway from TTPD is that we know nothing to begin with and that’s how she wants it, but am i crazy to think the opposite? that she’s begging people to understand her and see her and know her? love her even when she isn’t what she seems? relate to her even when she’s messy and wrong and guilty? it’s like she’s bleeding on the page, even when it’s scary and bad and weird and embarrassing, all for us. always for us.

i look in people’s windows may be her shortest song but i think it’s one of the most relatable ones. “i’m afflicted by the not knowing / i look in people’s windows in case you’re at their table, what if your eyes looked up and met mine one more time?” - how many times have i wondered what would happen if i saw someone again. how many times have i searched stranger’s faces for a glimpse of someone i once knew. how many times have I looked around once-familiar places in case i saw them. things end but you sometimes wish u could just see them one more time.. and what would happen? and that’s why im obsessed with this song!!!

Gosh there’s just so much in being able to genuinely say, these were my stories and now they’re yours. one doesn’t always get that kind of closure or ability to move on and people can spend years or a lifetime struggling with truly putting huge things behind them and not just begrudgingly trudging forward each day. I’m happy she has found a way to achieve it, boy she really means it when she says songwriting is her coping mechanism for working through life
