𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗬 #𝟭
February 6th, 2001
It was finally here; his sixth birthday. The boy had been diligently marking off the days on his calendar for the past couple of weeks in anticipation of his special day. Kicking his little feet with excitement, Jongup quickly hopped out of his seat when the bus pulled up to his stop, waving to the driver as he got off. Clutching the straps of his book bag in his hands, he ran as fast as he could toward his house.
“Mommy! I’m home!” He called out for his mother as he entered their small house, the smell of banana bread wafting to his nose. She had promised to make the sweet treat for his birthday and it seemed like this time she finally followed through on her promise. Scurrying around the house in search of his mother, Jongup pouted when he couldn’t find her.
Maybe she’s already waiting for him at the park? Another promise she had made for his birthday. Dropping his book bag off in his room, the boy skipped out the door, running off towards the nearby park with a smile plastered on his face. Arriving at the park, much to his disappointment, his mother was no where to be found. Hanging his head, he walked over to the swing set and sat down, waiting for his mother who would surely be coming soon.
“Shit shit shit!” Jongup’s mother cursed as she entered the house, dropping the small grocery bag onto the counter as she scrambled to take the burning banana bread out of the oven. Tossing it onto the stovetop in frustration, she held her face in her hands, tears threatening to spill over.
“I can’t take much more of this,” she muttered to herself, heaving as she began to sob. Being a single mother was starting to take a toll on her, especially when she never wanted to have children in the first place.
Ringing echoed throughout the kitchen as the telephone went off causing her to stumble over to it, letting a small sniffle out before answering. “Hello?” She answered hesitantly, quickly changing tone when she heard the voice on the other line. “You missed me already?” The woman smiled, twirling the cord around her finger.
“Now? I don’t see why not... as long as I’m back in time for when my son get’s back from school.” She didn’t even bother looking up at the clock to notice that her son was already off of school. Instead, she hurried into her bedroom to reapply her makeup and rushed out the door. Another man, another bill paid.
As Jongup waited for his mother, a local shopowners dog wandered up to the boy, dropping a ball at his feet. Picking the small green ball up, he tossed it for the dog to fetch, a small smile creeping back onto the boy’s face. The two played, enjoying each other’s company until it became dark outside.
“Sparky! Here boy!” The elderly shopowner called out for his dog, whistling to get his attention. Resting his head on Jongup’s knee, he allowed the boy to pet him a few times before running off to his owner. “Hey you! Son! You should hurry home before your parents worry about you!”
Realizing his mother probably wasn’t going to show up, Jongup scooted off the swing and made the short journey back home in the dark. The house was empty when he returned, seemingly a frightening concept to any small child but to him it was normal. Many nights he washed up and put himself to bed completely alone and hungry. However, tonight he did have the banana bread that his mother made especially for him.
Pulling over a kitchen chair, the boy climbed up and grabbed the bread tin with his small hands, bringing it over to the table. “Happy birthday to me... happy birthday to me...” Jongup sang softly to himself, clasping his small hands together to make a wish before blowing out the imaginary candle. With a fork in his hand, he dug into the burnt banana bread, faking a smile as he chewed.
