“Yeah,” Emmett said lowly, glancing at his son, “His mom was killed in the shooting.”
“Did he, uh, did he lose someone?” Connor asked carefully, trying to figure out how to approach the situation.

“Yeah, he won’t get out of the car. He’s too upset.”
“Having some problems there, man?”

“So you’re saying I should just leave him in the car for his mother’s memorial service?” Emmett asked with raised eyebrows, moving so Max couldn’t hear.
“Dude, leave the kid alone. If he doesn’t wanna come out, there’s obviously a good reason.”

Emmett glanced over at Connor with a sigh. He stood up, rubbing his head, “He won’t get out.”
Connor frowned as he spotted the crying kid and rolled over to see if he could help. “Everything alright?” he questioned.

Emmett smirked, thinking for a moment, “Well, I think a tickle war will be the perfect solution to my problem. Thanks.”
Elijah nodded a few times with a smirk. “It always works with my cousins.”

“Tickling?” Emmett grinned slightly, “That sounds... interesting... but it might work.”
“Oh, tickling.” Elijah said without any hesitation, completely straightface. “And loss of allowance.”

“Alright, third grade math. And the kid normally is good with homework... at least, that’s what his mom used to tell me.”
“Depends on the kind of homework. And the kind of kid, but mostly the kind of homework.”

Yeah, I’m not used to that. That was his mom’s job.
“That’s not true. Every child loves their parents even when they have to do things they don’t want to. Part of being a parent is knowing that you have to make them do the things because it will help them in the long run.”

“And that’ll work?” Emmett said slowly, “Ice cream and a few dollars?”
“Too much.” Alek said, shaking his head slightly. “Start with just the ice cream. Maybe a couple dollars if that doesn’t work. You can’t give him that much every time he won’t do something.”

“Whoa, that’s going a bit far, isn’t it? My dad did that with me, and I hated him. I mean, there has to be a fun way to get him to do his homework.”
“You gotta put your foot down, man. Don’t beg, don’t bribe…take away privileges if you have to.”

“Yeah, I think he liked me more when I was only around on weekends.”
“He does like you. I’m sure of it. Every kid loves their parents no matter what.”

Emmett grimaced. He didn’t like the idea of having to be the serious parent, “Yeah, I think I’ll just skip to the bribery... less of a risk of him hating me. How does twenty dollars and ice cream sound?”
Alek’s eyes widened a little, he knew that the little boy seemed to like his sister but he hadn’t realized the extent. “I don’t really know, except .. just try to sit with him and help him do it? Sit him at a table and tell him he can’t do anything else until it’s done? Bribery usually works if Karolin’s being difficult about it, so I don’t really know.”
