The Font that i used throughout my dust jackets is called Copasetic.
I had researched numerous film noir typefaces and this was the one that stood out to me. I thought it really resembled that era and would tie in great with my design.
I found it on Dafont.
The other typeface that i used was Franklin gothic book. This can be found on most mac or pc's.

This one also gave me some trouble.
I had previously tried to photograph a coin whilst spinning, that proved harder than it looked.
The image that i used in my original design was muddy and from feedback i learned that it was unrecognisable.
So i photographed some coins, went online found an image of the coin in the book and using photoshop manipulated it onto my image.
Im very pleased with the outsome and really think this is so much stronger than the previous.

Probably my favourite of the whole lot.
I really think the image is strong and conveys a messege.
The lighting worked out really well also.
I like how the type appears to be on the glass.

This cover was probably the one giving me most trouble.
I was lost as to what to put on it..
until i decided i would try a randsom letter since the story itself revolves around bribary and blackmail.
I rally liked how it turned out in the end, and since im no photographer im quite proud of my images.

Im really happy with how this has turned out, and its completly different to the previous version i had.
Dont worry the guns not real..
Again its kind of abstract but thats the feel i was going for.
I messed around with a few different ways of type and this one just stuck. I think it works well.

Final Design for Farewell my Lovely
I really like this one, its simple but i like the imagery and i believe its strong.
I wanted all  of my dust jackets to be similar with its use of objects and some use of abstract imagery.
This one i didnt change so much, i fixed the type and layed it out in a cleaner way.

The high window... a bit abstract right?
well the story goes like this..Marlowe hasto recover a missingBrasher Doubloona rare and valuable coin.
So in my head i wanted a spinning coin on my cover..
How difficult that was to photograoh!
So i improvised and used photoshop with some of the best from the bunch

Finally my idea for farewell my lovely.
The story is about a missing rare necklace.
So i took these photos in hopes that something would stand out for my cover.
I really like them and think that theres a few that would certainly work out well

Some photos for my idea i had for The little sister.
In the book a man is stabbed to death with an ice pick..
This is my enterpretation.
I made up my own concoction to look like blood ( will alter in photoshop)
I got what looked like a ice pick and took some grusome close ups
i actually think they worked out well, now to see how they work on my cover

Some more photographs i took using my camera..
I really like the monochrome effect as i think they are in keeping with the "film noir/ neo noir" feel i want for my design.
These were taken with flash.
I found out in my research that in the novel The big sleepa character is killed by poison and he drops his glass which still has the poison in it.
So i went with this idea, i used a few methods but these are the best from the bunch of photos i took, i really like the close up ones more.

These are some images i took using my canon eos 550d
I wanted a sillouette feel to them so i used no flash and had a light pointed in certain directions so that the shadow would cast over different parts of the face.
I really liked how most of the turned out and am considering using them in the cover design for Playback.
He looks like a guy who would blackmail you or beat the living $*** out of you.

Some images that i was working on that i was thinking of incorporating into my dust jackets
Tumblr media
I made these images using a bamboo tablet and photoshop painting tools. Its my first real try at a digital painting, and they are rough, but i like that effect about them, these stories have a rough and gritty feel to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More images using my tablet, i really thought that the idea of silhouette art was a good idea, because it fits in with the film noir/ neo noir feel to the books, im not sure how i would go about laying the images out on the cover, with the type, or if they would look too boring and if the imagery itself is in relevance with the books themselves.

Article-Film Noir: 30 Dark And Cold Digital Artworks
I found this article online and thought some of the imagery and art used is so cool. It gave me some more ideas towards the direction i want my dust jackets to go in. The neo/film noir style is really sticking in my brain, and i want that rough, criminal raw feel to them. I also really liked most of the Monochrome and black and white images. To me that is what this style is all about.
Film noir is one of the most easily recognizable types of films which is widely known for their black and white visuals, their use of shadows and silhouettes, the hard-boiled characters, the anti-heroes and their deceiving leading ladies.

Spiced with the usual array of violence, guns, booze and a lot of cigarettes, film noir is also one of the most stylish forms of cinema in the world. Sadly, Noirs aren’t made that often anymore, although several neo-noir films have been released over the past few decades.
We know how awesome it is, therefore we are willing to share to you a collection of 30 very cool digital artworks inspired from film noir. Enjoy the cold darkness that silences everything else in the world.

Kenny Mencher
I really liked the idea of maybe incorporating watercolour or oil paints into my cover design so i researched some artists and found this guy:
Kenney Mencher is an Americanpainter. He is currently Associate Professor of Art and Art History as well as the director and curator of the Louie-Meager Art Gallery at Ohlone College in Fremont,California, and he has previously taught at institutions including the University of Chicago andTexas A&M University.
Mencher depicts scenes filled with ambiguous stories, allowing the viewers to join in the creation process. Common themes include people whispering, half-full (or half-empty) drinking glasses, the visual exploration of clichés,film noir themes, sequential narratives, and thematic apperception tests.
He  cites film noir and television as major influences on his work. Mencher often uses his wife, friends, family pets, and students as inspiration and models for his paintings, and they in turn may suggest storylines and poses for the work in progress.
Here are two book covers he did that i think fit in somewhat with the style of the Raymond Chandler novels.

A lot of the art uses the themes associated with film and neo noir, Cynical main character, Sexy female lead, Dark story, greed, money, and jealousy
