Elspeth Barnes’ apartment:

How long of a commute is it for them to work every day from home?: 10 minute drive, 25 minute walk

Number of bedrooms?: 2
Number of bathrooms?: 2
Number of square footage?: 1725 sqft
What kind of amenities does it have?: Air conditioning, heat, water, free parking (one spot)
How much do they pay per month for it?: Elspeth pays, on average, $1639 a month.

Favourite part about the house?: Elspeth loves her rooftop deck and will spend most nights up there.

“You sure? No celebrities on your list that you’d have sex with if given the chance?” Or whatever people fantasized about. “What the hell are you drinking, anyway?” The blonde’s reaction had caused a small grimace to settle, while she contentedly drank her champagne. But she shared the mutual background of relying on herself as Elspeth had–in a more violent way, in the end. A daughter. Kali couldn’t do it. “I don’t.” She said, taking a drink, recalling the countless time she’d been asked in the past when she’d married and produce spawn. “Don’t think I have any sort of maternal drive in my body.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“No, actually. I really only wanna fuck my boyfriend,” she responded; besides Toby and a handful of others, she’d never really had any ‘dream guy’ or celebrity crush. She’d never really had the luxury of having crushes when she was a child. Elspeth and her siblings were merely trying to survive. Eyeing the cup, Elspeth turned to Kali and chuckled softly. “I honestly don’t even know anymore -- it’s all tasting the same. To emphasize I also have no maternal bone, I have no idea where my daughter even is in this event. So. Smart move not having kids.”

“Yeah,” he chirped, fiddling with his fingers as he sat at the bar, a smile pulling delicately as his lips. “Out of context, yeah, I can see the confusion. I’ve seen pretty much everything except that Antman and the Wasp one, but I can do my best to fill you in if you have an questions about it! Bit of amateur Marvel savant if I do say so myself.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It was so much -- I only know Iron Man, but I saw his movie like ten years ago,” she mumbled out, looking over at the company. While she didn’t necessarily care about the plot about the movies, Elspeth was happy to entertain this conversation. It was fun and harmless and it would keep her mind off of things. “So why do him and Captain America hate each other?”

“I fuckin’ try…I do.” Bas says with a sigh “There’s just a lot of shit going on for me and for Gio.” Giovanni going through puberty was such a harsh thing on the kid and Basil does wish that he could just help him through it, though Gio would much rather go to Gwen about things like that rather than his dad. Well, Gio constantly ran to Gwen. Sometimes he felt like he didn’t know his own son at times. It was a fight most days to get a good conversation out of the boy, but when there was something that they could bond over, it usually went well. Basil prided himself on spending time with his son when he could, it was just hit or miss sometimes.
“I know there was some movie theaters offering a run down of all the movies that lead up to this. That would have been nice to have.” Basil shrugs his shoulders and looks at Elspeth. “Well…maybe you should ask her? Watch it with her sometime?” His heart pained a little when she admitted that she didn’t know her daughter’s favorite movie. He felt for any parent struggling to bond with their kid. “I mean,…like,…every kid is different and somethings you can’t really enjoy together. Gio fuckin likes this thing called Fortnite and I for the life of me can’t play video games like that. Give me Super Mario or Galaga.”
“That’s good,” Elspeth mused, voice still detached and emotionless, but the conversation did get her thinking. When she’d had Hannabeth, she was in no way equipped to be a mother. But she figured she could do it, even with no involvement from the father. He’d been married to someone else, he hadn’t wanted anything to do with Elspeth once she was pregnant. But that suited her fine; she was just using him for sex. And he wasn’t even good. Elspeth thought it would have been easy. Hannabeth was so different than her though -- she wanted hugs from her mom. And coddling. She wanted things Elspeth had never had as a child, and honestly didn’t know how to give.
“I’m more of a behind the scenes parent -- like, I would do anything for Hannabeth, but I can’t let her know that I would,” Elspeth explained calmly, same tone as if explaining the sky was blue. There was no reason or rhyme for what she did in her rearing of her daughter, save for two things. Two things that Elspeth, sober, would never admit to anyone she cared about. Good thing she was drunk and he was essentially a stranger. “It saves her from thinking she can count on anyone. I don’t want her to depend on anyone, because people all suck. All of them, myself included.” A pause, she nodded before continuing. “Plus, I don’t know how to relate to anyone. Fuck, look at how I treated you the first time we met.” Ordering another shot, Elspeth looked at the wood of the bar. That was enough opening up. “What the hell is Fortnite?”

“Babe –” It comes out as a sigh, though he’s not too disappointed. While interviewing Mark Ruffalo is a high point of Toby’s career … he kind of fucking hated everything that came out of the man’s mouth. Her interruption is a blessing in disguise; “Yeah, yeah baby. We can head out. You getting tired?” She looks wasted; Toby’s had almost as much as her, but he’s going strong. The pros of being a high-functioning alcoholic.
Tumblr media
“Sorry -- “ she apologizes, waving halfheartedly to whoever she pushed without even looking at them. Elspeth wasn’t sorry; she’d spent a majority of the night forced to make fucking small talk and she’d fucking had it. She didn’t care about celebrities, she didn’t care about this city, she’d only gone because she had a ticket and Toby had to go for work. What was she supposed to do? Binge old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries and sit on her couch. She wound her arms around his neck and sighed, looking up at him. “Kind of -- I’m just bored. Plus I can’t find Hannabeth -- “ Mother of the year. She knew Hannabeth was smart enough not to just go off with someone, but still. “Can we just find her and go home? These celebrities suck anyway.”

“Excuse me -- “ Elspeth blurted out, pushing the other person out of the way to better reach her boyfriend. It was only after this occurred that she figured it was probably a celebrity having an interview. And while she slightly regretted ruining an opportunity for Toby, she also was drunk and very much had had it sitting at the bar and being depressed. Keeping her eyes on her boyfriend, she sighed. “Can we go home now?”

He’s a nerd so he’s perhaps, overly enthusiastic about this. He’s been discreetly watching Elspeth out of the corner of his eyes. She’s getting buzzed and he knows it simply by the way her behavior has changed. Caleb exhales and infers that this woman must not be having the most enjoyable time ( it’s a shame really ). Clearing his throat, he takes a sip of his own beverage, relishing in the slight burn the alcohol leaves as it travels downwards. A warm sensation gathers in his stomach as a result. “Yeah, I did.” he answers the question with a small grin. “It was very well made. And don’t worry, I totally get it that this superhero genre isn’t for everyone.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I wasn’t worried, I was just confused,” she explains, sighing as she flicks at the side of her empty shot glass. She should have kept a better eye on Hannabeth, the whole reason she’d brought her was to try and bond. Be a ‘good mom’. Now she had no one to talk to, was buzzed, and still had no better idea of what the hell she’d just watched or why she should care. She hadn’t seen an Avengers movie since the first Iron man ten years ago, so this night was sort of turning into a bust. The only sort of upside was some D-list actor had tried to pick her up, and she’d turned him down flat. So, that was kind of cool.
“What do you do for a living that got you here? Or’d you buy your way in?” It’s a rude question, but she has nothing left in her to try and play off as politeness.

Calm, cool, and collected–Kali never understood the frenzy when it came to being in the presence of a celebrity, fantasizing or knowing everything about them without ever actually meeting. That craving for stardom, yearning for attention from someone in a position of power–laughable. Though Kali had to wonder if any were associated with the crime life in Atlanta, finding it amusing at the countless scenarios they must get away with. The person next to her spoke, and Kali recognized the blonde out of her peripheral, eyes trained forward and observing the party. “No.” She said flatly, taking a sip of her Manhattan. “I’ve never been one for superhero movies, or superheroes in general. The person you should depend on is yourself.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I don’t get the hype -- “ she agreed, her own words flat and emotionless as she downed the rest of her piss warm water. She sneered at the beverage, mouth twisting in disgust as she pushed the glass away. Gross. Elspeth turned her head to see if she could try and make eyes with Toby or Hannabeth but they were lost somewhere in the crowd. It was probably for the best -- she was feeling the alcohol, and the last thing she needed were people who made her feel emotions. Kalina was good for that -- for just letting her relax. Detach. “All I’ve ever relied on was myself, and I’m sure you have to. I raised my daughter to know that no one’s going to come and save you.” A pause. “Do you have kids?”

Elspeth was one of the first people Basil recognized at the bar when he made his way over from the theater. He had only recognized her from their last encounter which wasn’t that very savory. She was very rude and stand-off-ish. He didn’t like her at all. However, the two of them seemed to have the same plan for the night, drink as much as possible and get the hell out of there. However, Basil still had to be socialble and not make a damn fool out of himself while there were reporters and paparazzi around.
“My kid always asks me to watch these movies with him…-” He says, trying to conceal a burp as best as he could before continuing, “-…it was alright, not the greatest movie in my opinion.” He shrugs his shoulder and reaches for the beer in front of him. “It was too damn long though. Three hours,…fuck…that’s three hours I’m never going to get back.”
Elspeth nodded; he was a good dad. A character note to keep in the back of her mind. “You’re a better parent than me -- “ Elspeth admitted, not in a way to garner sympathy or pity but just to state a fact. She and Basil had certainly gotten off on the wrong foot, from the dotted memory she had of their first interaction. So, it made sense to try and compliment him, especially if it was based on truth. It was simple then.
“I don’t even know what my daughter’s favourite movie is -- definitely not that,” she sighed, ordering herself a water to try and accommodate the alcohol swishing around inside of her. “It was so fucking long. So fucking long and nothing even happened for like, two of those three hours. It was just fucking call backs to movies I’ve never seen.”

Elspeth’s feeling the buzz. Ten minutes into the after party and she’s downed four shots of tequila to cope with the fact she doesn’t want to be here. It was a good idea, doing something nice for Hannabeth and taking her out. Plus, Tobias was here, even if he was working. So, in theory, this should have been tolerable. But she’d managed to piss her daughter off relatively early into the evening, so now her solace was the bottom of a bottle. Sniffling slightly, she took a sip of her warm tap water and turned to the person nearest her. “ -- did you like that movie earlier? I’ve never seen an Avengers movie so ... I didn’t get it.”

He allowed the laugh to fall, Logan almost impressed by the pale-haired woman. “I ain’t havin’ a rough night—“ Rough life, maybe, but that was his own shit to deal with. Not that it stopped him lifting the drink to his lips, passing it off as humor. “You give off uh—I don’t give a fuck—kinda vibe.” And he took another sip, meeting her eyes. “Am I right?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Not even close,” she mumbled, leaning on the bar, shaking her head with a small smirk. It’s not that she didn’t give a fuck, it’s that she literally couldn’t. But she tried, for a select few people. She’d celebrated Christmas with her daughter every year until she’d told Elspeth to stop. A moment passed, and she continued. “It’s more the ‘I can’t be assed’ vibe. That’s what I try to go for, anyway. I hope you don’t profile people for a living.”

“Possibly one might be you cannot make a friend to save your life—“ Fredrik was amused by the conversation. Of course, he had many tropes—but none of them to be known. He had a job, a title of power to protect for his own selfish reasoning. “Another simply could be no one likes you, you give off an air of arrogance when really you lack the care needed at all.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“The second one -- that’s me,” she replied flatly, a small smile of satisfaction. Elspeth liked solving puzzles, putting things together. It’s why she excelled at being a cop, everything was just pieces waiting to be assembled. Fredrik saw that, and it was likely the reason she was kept on the force at all. “I have one friend. He’s also my boyfriend so, two birds with one stone. What about you? What’s one of your tropes?” A pause, remembering who she was talking to. “You can lie. I won’t care.”

“Wonderful. Hanni will be thrilled to hear that. Do holler if we can help out in any way. You know how much we love Hannabeth.”
The bodyguard—the new, lemur-faced one whose name she kept forgetting—sidestepped both women and held the door open. Sarah entered first.
“My toad leaves in September, actually.” She glanced over her shoulder. “Uni Göttingen.”
The playful smirk was genuine: it didn’t surprise her Elspeth had assumed wrong. Bless her heart, sometimes it felt like she struggled to remember even Hannabeth’s age.
“My folks got her an apartment in the city as a graduation gift.” They made their order and took the table in the far back, Sarah claiming the chair right under the AC vent. Elspeth would live, considering she had nothing but teensy shorts on—the kind Sarah had once hidden under flowery dresses and frilly skirts and revealed as soon as she and her girlfriends were far enough from Mama’s prying eyes.
Her nose wrinkled. How unfair was that? Even in heels she didn’t have Elspeth’s height, but she did have killer legs. Such a darned waste, to have to cover them up all the time.
She offered a vague shrug. “To be honest, I’ve no idea what I’ll do with her gone.” Figuratively, since Sarah’s schedule—to her horror—was stacked for the foreseeable future, but still. Hanna-Sofie was her first, only baby girl. “On the one hand, I’m proud she’s chosen my alma mater, but Göttingen feels less like Germany and more like The Galaxy Far, Far Away right now. ”
Tumblr media
She chuckled softly, slipping into her seat in the back. Anyone who glanced her way would wonder if she was some charity case the governor had taken on. With her shorts, braless underneath what she was pretty sure was Hannabeth’s shirt. She looked good though -- for a woman in her forties, Elspeth was more than aware she was attractive. Elspeth was very aware they looked like the odd couple. But that also fed into her need to stand out, she liked looking like she didn’t belong. And it seemed, at her core self, Sarah liked it too. Or so Elspeth assumed.
“That’s what Tobias and whatever nerd she’s dating are for, moving furniture and shit,” she laughed gently, scooting in closer to the table. It was the least they could do, help her move boxes. She didn’t have the money to get her a nice place like Sarah Jane did. Elspeth would have been embarrassed had she normal emotions. But no, instead she shrugged and pulled her napkin onto her lap. “I -- totally want to see this elaborate place. I’m sure it’s beautiful. You have impeccable taste so, I’m assuming it’s luxurious beyond human comprehension.”
A small playful smirk, Elspeth reached across the table and patted her friend’s hand. A gesture of sympathy; she didn’t know how else to communicate kindness. She never was upset when Hannabeth left, it was the natural order of things. Children were supposed to leave the home -- ... “Aw, she’ll be back before you know it. She’ll miss you too. I mean, Hannabeth hates me and she texted me the other day that she needed to come home right away. And .. -- your Hanni loves you.”
