She couldn't have done this entirely without help. Abigail, one of her maidens, had aided her with the clothing, simple in fabric and cut; so very different from anything she would have been allowed to wear as queen. Corina was supposed to cover her absence while she was away, just in case anyone asked. Tiffin herself had, quite carefully, taken note of guards and routes and paths in which she would be able to leave the Keep unbothered, the best time to leave and return inconspicuously.
No one would pay much attention to a commoner leaving, she expected; which was why it was paramount to avoid those who might recognize her too easily. Grateful as Tiffin was for protection, it defeated the purpose of leaving disguised, should she be accompanied by a retinue of any sort. Those responsible for her safety would see it as a needless risk; most others would think her foolish to want to be seen as anything other than the queen. Both would miss the central point: neither special treatment nor concealment of real problems was of interest to her. She wanted to see things as they were, from as close to it as she could get. One day would not be enough… but, slowly, over time, she may yet find an effective way to learn of her people's plights firsthand.
It goes well enough, initially. Nevertheless, all her preparation does not prevent her from startling when a decidedly unexpected friend announces his presence. Tiffin stops in her tracks as he speaks, breath held in the split second it takes for her mind to catch up and realization to dawn that Matthias does not try to stop her - even if she is well aware it is not a choice he offers, not in truth, when offering his company.
She would have taken it, anyway.
Not because she cares for the safety he offers, nor to have a spy by her side just in case. She does appreciate Matthias' effort to keep them safe; she appreciates the company purely for its own sake, regardless. Light laughter comes only as a quiet chuckle - an effort not to draw attention, still - and she smiles brightly at him.
"I should have known you'd catch me," The young queen does not seem bothered at all by it. When she continues, though, a bit of cheekiness cannot entirely be avoided. "Why, I wasn't too worried about my safety, master spy. Is the city not safe for its people? That would seem to me like a severe oversight."
"In fact," Gaze turns away from him, then, no longer taken by surprise or worry, she glances towards the city instead. Though there is no heaviness in her tone, the shift is palpable; she no longer speaks in jest or irony. "I was hoping this venture would give me more insight into just what may be the most overlooked problems of our people. Some of them, at least - that they may reach the king and be dealt with if possible. I thought the Trade District would be a fine place to start. What say you?"
@thasdorah / @elllerian liked for a starter !
Mathias has known from the very beginning what his life's mission is: Serve and protect the crown at all costs. It's an easy, no-nonsense concept to understand, and one he has trained tirelessly to fulfill. With the new era in progress, what with Stormwind's rebuilding, Varian crowned king, and Mathias finally regarded as a capable agent, he could feel the change in the wind.
But, there's also the more human side of him; he'd watched what are effectively his peers grow up alongside him, all living parallel lives, and has witnessed firsthand that the actual characters of those he protects themselves are... far less predictable than the objective statement. Tiffin Ellerian, being what he's mostly referring to.
Ah, Tiffin, always somehow finding some way to get into some manner of trouble that Mathias couldn't possibly keep up with, or prevent altogether.
He clicks his tongue, watching what is most certainly a specific Ellerian-Wrynn sneak out in inconspicuous garb. He probably should have expected this would be something she'd get up to, but alas...
“ You know, if you're going to be sneaking around like that, ” Shaw speaks up, revealing himself from the shadows he'd tucked away in. He was shrouded in a large cloak himself, dressed in nondescript plainclothes as well. “ You might be safer bringing a spy with you, just in case. ”
Translation: I'm coming with you.

thinking of tiffin, already being queen, sneaking out of the keep in the plainest clothing to go into the city proper and interact with people without them knowing who she is. thinking of this being used as an escape, yes, but also a means to just be around the people she's supposed to rule and see them and their lives and their struggles for what they are (so she can use what power she has as queen to make things better). thinking that even as queen, even when people likely wouldn't expect her to mix with the commonfolk, she absolutely would and would treat them with all respect.
thinking of her going to westfall too, and visiting edwin. thinking about the fact her friends, common or nobility, are never treated differently. thinking about how if anyone suggested she shouldn't, or that she 'doesn't need' friends like him anymore, she would be so angry and outraged.

in any verse tiffin survives beyond her canonical death, I think she’d be very supportive of those looking for justice for what happened to them. gilneas fell to the forsaken and genn lost his son (she doesn’t know and dreads ever knowing what it would be like to lose a child but even the thought of it hurts, and her kingdom fell when she was a girl; even if it didn’t cause her to hate all the orcs, she’s certainly felt anger and resent). innocent people died and theramore was obliterated, after everything jaina did for peace she just lost so much, and in a way that wasn't even war but outright trying to exterminate the city she built. tyrande lost not only her land but had to see something deeply sacred to her and her people burn, people who suffered horrible deaths.
and I just think she’d feel very deeply for each and all of them. it doesn’t make her hate the horde and think they all have to die, that’s not ever her approach to things, but i think she's deeply aware moving forward while ignoring what happened before isn’t building peace. the way tiffin would see it, that would just be an interlude until tension boiled over and the next war started. you have to face what happened and people have to be held accountable or the old hatreds will resurface at some point. without any sort of justice, those who suffered won’t heal. but there are ways to make justice less about punishment and more about reform, and I feel this is mostly where she’d stand when it comes to people paying for their crimes.
I don’t think she’s oblivious to the alliance having their share of wrongs to right either. they have enslaved people and destroyed cities and killed innocents too. and that’s also something they’d have to face if peace is ever to be achieved, because acting like they’re morally superior won’t get anyone anywhere.

this is the asoiaf fan in me being too loud, but arya early on in the story and the part where sansa is exasperated that her sister befriends anyone + margaery taking the time to personally talk to people and hear about their problems and buy from local merchants and bakers and such and go to orphanages and all the stuff the tyrells do for pr except i think as much as her family would be trying to benefit from it she just genuinely cares and wants to be around these people and know them and their troubles as well as possible and firsthand if she's to be their queen
i think the ellerians, in general, were ambitious (not all of her brothers were, but certainly the last one alive who'd be head of the house after the wars; he wanted the connection to the throne and place in the house of nobles, and he'd have been the one to ensure varian fulfilled the promise to marry tiffin, since it was made by their parents originally). they probably didn't approve of her befriending commoners as a child, nor did her genuine care reflect her family's thoughts. which is all just a rant to say i don't think she ever wanted to be queen, but if she was going to be anyway, she'd always have been determined to use that power for the good of common people as much as possible. no, that didn't make her many friends among nobility and she wasn't popular with the house of nobles.

onyxia had to get rid of tiffin bc 1. she had no chance to fuck varian while tiffin lived 2. tiffin was from westfall and she would strangle katrana prestor herself for all her decisions to make things worse there
it's suggested the magic of her amulet was an influence but not outright control over people, that something had to be there in the first place for it to work, so it'd never work to make her ok with it

" 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐢 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞? " he had, of course. once in the morning when the sunlight streamed in through the stained glass windows, her beauty awash in arrays of citrus and gold. once in the afternoon just before he retired to the council's chambers to hear of the littany of burdens that befell stormwind since just last week. enough times where he was certain that she would grow weary of hearing it — but he meant it.
light knows he meant it.
in all of his years, no one had ever been quite as astonishing to him as his wife. even well before they had truly become accustomed to one another; her smile could render him breathless and he could swear to the heavens above that she was the only one who could ever bring him to his knees if she willed it. it is the evening now, a time that was only for them and their child who had not yet been born, but the swell of her belly grew by the day, just as the king's love for her and whoever their child may come to be did.
he outreaches, taking her by the cheek with a gentleness that was so often lost upon the warrior king. varian brings her closer into his arms, if only to press a kiss to her forehead, then to the tip of her nose, and finally concluding against her lips for a lingering moment of sheer devotion.
" before you say anything clever, i remember that i have ... but perhaps you could humor me a little this one time, hm? "
VARIAN LOVES HIS WIFE HOURS.

The callouses on his hands denounce years of sword practice of one prepared for the role of warrior no less than he was to be prepared for the role of king. In their chambers, he is neither. Both crown and sword are but fragments of all he is; here, he needs no more than be himself, armor and mantle set aside.
It takes her aback, sometimes, how completely Varian claimed her heart for himself. What follows is always gratitude — there are as many stories of matches like theirs that led to sorrow as there are leaves in a tree. Instead, they have this: each other, and a bond that duty alone could scarcely replicate.
Varian (this one, entirely hers, vulnerable as he cannot often allow himself to be) is more undoing in that gentle touch than the strength he was widely known to have. Tiffin melts easily upon contact, the amused curl of her smile softening further as blue eyes close; a complete surrender to his affection, basking in the loving contact of his lips as a cat would in sunlight.
To say she would never be accustomed to it would be a lie: she is, already; unable to imagine herself without him, unwilling to entertain the thought. Nevertheless, she knows it will never lose its wonder, to wake by his side, peaceful ere the troubles of the day can get to him, to hear his voice whenever the mood strikes him to offer her sweet words, to taste the devotion in the kisses he offers and to share quiet moments such as this, illuminated in candlelight and allowed the peaceful sanctuary of each other's embrace — there is an endless list with every little reason why this must be some sort of magic on its own, more than any elemental mastery could claim to be.
Long fingers settle on the back of his neck, brushing dark hair gently, as her other hand rests upon his chest. He brings them close, and she finds her place there easily, his arms around her a perfect fit. When the last kiss is broken and she looks up to meet his gaze, there is amusement in her eyes, light laughter following. "Hmm, I was beginning to worry about your forgetfulness."
Yet if the teasing cannot be entirely avoided, when she speaks again there is naught but sweetness in her words. "You can say it again, one more time or a thousand — I will never tire of hearing it, my love, so long as you are the one to say it."

❝I killed a buck today.❞ A successful hunt and his first one, and still young boy of golden hair twists the bottom of his tunic in his hands, for while his father had been overjoyed at his son's first kill, Anduin clearly did not share the sentiment. Pride was lost on him, a frustrating fact, and so soft child sought comfort in the one person he knew would understand. ❝But I thought of you, and of father, and wondered what would happen if it had a child, too.❞
REQUESTED ASKS. // ty guys for indulging me (◕‿◕✿)
Initial words would not give away what troubles him if not for distress all too easy to be seen; as is, they come more as explanation of his upset than introduction to subject at all, even before Anduin offers explanation of his own. Others would have taken pride on the deed, no hint of it on her son, and her hands are stained with all softness and sympathy for he, gentle child that he is, as they reach for his and lead Anduin to sit beside her on stone bench. There is neither dismissal nor demeaning to be found in mother’s presence, and she tries to offer what comfort can be offered, little though it may be when it comes to life and death and duties expected of him as a prince.
Tiffin had not grown up a princess, and yet so had she ofttimes clashed with what was expected and what was in her heart; would that he did not have to experience it all, yet even as she wish so did she knew he had to, for too much sheltering would not make his life better either.
How do you explain the need of something you do not agree with?
It was needless death when done so for sport, even if in the end leather would be used for clothing and meat for feasting; they did not need it. Many did, she knew, and for those she held no judgment at all, for survival and amusement were and always would be so fundamentally different as to cause the act in itself not to be the same either. But this was not done out of need; was but a way to introduce him to aspects of war, train skills as much as to make him used to the blood. He is too young to be learning to spill blood, her heart whispers, and Tiffin places an arm around her son, pulling him close; we were similarly young when war knocked down our kingdom’s doors, the logical part of her replies.
“The priests say we are all connected through the Light, from the tiniest being to the mightier beast,” Shifts ever so slightly to better look at him, delicate hands running through his hair in hope to be soothing. “I always thought there was truth to it…. but this also means that while all life is important, we all have our roles to play. Sometimes, that includes death, too… even if it also had a family.”
“I know it seems cruel, Anduin, but think of it like this,” Caresses his cheek and lifts his chin with utmost gentleness, blue eyes meeting. “the results of a hunt allow people to be fed, to feed their families, and so it keeps other mothers and fathers and children alive. It gives them strength and provides needed nurture. And one day… when it is our lives that come to an end, we will in turn strengthen the earth and that which grows in it, and another generation of deer will have food to survive and grow strong.”
“Killing should never have to come easy to anyone.” Did, at times, be it due to need or nature, but should not have to, ever. All life was worthy of respect, all of it precious in a multitude of ways; it is the most important thing she wishes him to understand: there is no shame in that he takes no pride in it. “Lives are important, all of them.”
There is no shame in not taking pride on it, no, and if others may see in it weakness, she sees only a heart too big for one so little. Pulls him into a proper embrace, a kiss pressed to the top of his head before Tiffin pulls away only enough to look at his face again. “I understand you wish you wouldn’t have to —- I wish so too. But I am very proud that if it can’t be avoided, you still do not see death as amusement, and that you care and respect the life you took, Anduin. Understand the need of what you did, but never forget that.”
