CAUSA SUI at Stoned From The Underground Festival 2006 by Andreas. From what I heard, their singer left after the second album to travel to India ... tbh I wasn't much impressed at first because they were announced as somewhat "Hendrix-influenced" and I didn't quite agree ;) while after checking them out at home, they reminded me a lot more of Monster Magnet which is cool either way, they've found their own style soon after with the many jam albums which made them quite popular in the scene.

It seems that WIGHT don't like their original debut cover anymore? They changed it on the re-releases and by the way, not even Discogs shows the correct cover, which is this one. Fun fact: I was the layouter behind this early Kozmik Artifactz/Bilocation release ;)
Wight were always among my favorite german groups in the scene but there have always been many good bands in Germany. We used to have a long link list of stoner groups on the Generated X website, maybe I should at least name them all in a future post here?

BAD ACID was a cool print fanzine with extensive DVD content in the early 2000s, edited by Dave Gedge from the UK with a staff of writers and layouters from around the globe. The genres included far more than just the stoner and psychedelic family, pretty much all underground guitar music, and bits of electronica as well.
You could spend a year on the DVD content of one issue alone! The magazine only ran for about 10 issues, but if you extrapolate that to "regular magazine size", it would be at least three times the amount of content. I was one of the layouters for some issues and made the cover for TAB 7. Other cover artists included Malleus and Arik Roper.
By the way, the cover here is Tab 7, but the two sample pages are from Tab 6, which was still black and white, later there were also colored pages and at some point the whole issue was just packed into one huge DVD, if I remember correctly. A few more images after the break ...

HAINLOOSE at Stoned from the Underground 2006 by Andreas. They were a cool band from Munich in the vain of late 90s Corrosion Of Conformity with their own personality. Their second album "Burden State" was really cool. I just stumbled across this video, never saw this before. Nice to see that not everything gets lost, although the band has nothing official on bandcamp or anywhere else it seems. A few more pics from the past can be found here, incl. gigposters. HAINLOSE was a Hard Rock / Stoner Rock band from Munich / Germany founded in 2000.

Band history:
The story´s beginning somewhere in year 2000, when singer and guitar player Haris founded his first band KINCH. The band was mainly influenced by the bands such like Fu Manchu, Kyuss and QOTSA. Under this name, the band released a split-CD on Freebird Records in Holland and did a contribution to the compilation Gimme Stoner Rock-released on Pimp Records later that year. Few gigs followed (e.g. together with K2B in Jena, Rosenkeller), but just after a short time the band split up and disappeared for quite a while.
Almost one year passed until the new line-up was found, marking the new era of the band. The band came up with the new name Hainloose, taking the new spirit and putting it into new material, which suddenly sounded even more powerful and raw. While still sticking to the stoner sound, the band opened borders for some new impulses, brought in by the musical taste of the new members (Motorpsycho, Pothead, Depeche Mode, Soundgarden, AC/DC, Stray Cats, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc.). All these different influences resulted into a typical Hainloose sound, based on groovy, 70´s influenced riffs carrying big portions of blues and southern rock feeling which along with the very recognizable vocals make the band unique.
2003 the time was right for the band´s first full-length release Rosula. Around the same time, a new label was founded in Munich by a good friend (Stefan Koglek, guitarist and singer of the band Colour Haze), and the album was released on Elektrohasch Records. The album quite surprised the scene and got lots of positive feedback which helped the band get opportunity to play some bigger gigs (several open airs, tour with Los Natas through Europe, tour with Label mates UGH! etc.).
During the autumn 2005, the band started working on a new material. By the end of the year everything was ready for the band to hit the studio in order to record Rosula´s follow-up-Burden State. After six months of production, the album again got released on Munichs Label ELEKTROHASCH Records at June 2006. With the second album the band definitely gained recognition in the stoner scene which opened doors to play on this years´ Stoned From The Underground festival in Erfurt, which is considered to be the biggest stoner festival in Germany.

Kyuss by Kozik, it hardly gets more "stoner" than that ;) This one pretty much was the first artsy gigposter I've ever come across, in a 90s Visions Magazine. While I was living in the depths of rural Germany this may not be the biggest surprise, but I was always fascinated with how much detail a person would put into just one concert advertisement!

Interview mit Stefan Koglek
(Sänger/Gitarrist von Colour Haze, Mastermind von Elektrohasch Platten)
Sie haben einiges vorzuweisen, die Jungs von Colour Haze. Die seit 1994 immer erfolgreicher agierende Band aus München erobern seither die Clubs und Festivals (z.B. Burg Herzberg, Stoned From The Underground, Swamp Room Happening u.v.m.), haben mit der Gründung des Labels Elektrohasch einen sicheren Background für ihre Veröffentlichung erlangt und sind auch außerhalb der Bundesrepublik längst kein unbeschriebenes Blatt mehr. Für uns ist es sowohl eine Ehre als auch eine Freude, ein Interview mit Stefan, dem einzigen Gründungsmitglied, führen zu dürfen.
Frage: Wenn ich Colour Haze höre und an München denke kommen mir immer Amon Düül, die 60er und 70er Jahre und die ganzen Kommunengeschichten in den Kopf. Wie weit seid ihr davon entfernt oder kann man Parallelen ziehen?
Antwort: Davon sind wir eigentlich ziemlich weit entfernt und unbeeinflusst. Es gibt natürlich hier und da Kontakte zu alten Freaks aus der Szene, bis auf wenige rühmliche Ausnahmen sind das allerdings meist Leute die nur ihren alten Zeiten hinterherhängen, sich zu Neuem nicht mehr aufraffen oder begeistern können und daher eher uninteressant für uns sind. München hat natürlich, wie jede Stadt, eine ganz eigene Athmosphäre, die sicherlich ein wenig in unsere Musik hineinspielt, genauso wie ich z.B. meine Berliner Bands immer ihre Herrkunft anhören zu können....
Frage: Das neue Album ist wieder ein Schritt nach vorn in der Colour Haze Geschichte, ähnelt jedoch sehr den beiden Vorgängern! Was kommt als nächstes?
Antwort: Nun, sowas planen wir eigentlich gar nicht. Unsere Musik entsteht immer aus dem Augenblick und auch aus dem was uns musikalisch zur jeweiligen Zeit gerade beeinflusst. Dabei können wir natürlich nicht aus unserer Haut und so wird Colour Haze hoffe ich auch weiter nach Colour Haze klingen...
Frage: Ich finde es erstaunlich wie weit ihr konsequent über die Jahre gekommen seid, habt es natürlich verdient, und frage mich was kann man noch erreichen! Was gibt es für Zukunftspläne für Colour Haze und Elektrohasch?
Antwort: Mit Colour Haze machen wir bereits das, wovon wir am Anfangt nicht mal geträumt haben - wir sind international auf Tour und erreichen Leute weltweit. Das Touren kann natürlich noch ein bischen angenehmer und komfortabler werden (wir haben gerade einen neuen, größeren Bus gekauft ;-) und wenn wir irgendwann einen Status erreichen bei dem die Gagen endlich auch unsere gesamten Unkosten decken (Auto, Lightshow, Tontechnik aber auch Equipmentunterhalt und Proberraummiete, den Arbeitsausfall durch unbezahlten Urlaub auch nicht zu vergessen) dann haben wir schon fast alles erreicht...
Elektrohasch ist mein Lebensunterhalt und muß daher noch ein wenig wachsen. Derzeit investiere ich daher sehr viel in die Ausweitung des Programms aber auch meine internationale Vertriebswege müssen noch verbessert werden. In einigen Ländern, wie den USA, Benelux oder Deutschland läufts schon sehr gut, in anderen wie Italien ist`s zufriedenstellend, der Rest von Europa wird zwar bedient, kann aber noch besser werden und dann gibts da noch einige weiße Flecken...
Frage: Wird es eventuell ein Livealbum oder sogar eine Unplugged Session geben?
Antwort: Dazu bräuchten wir endlich mal eine gute Aufnahme eines guten Konzerts ;-). Zumindest vom diesjährigen Roadburn soll in Kanada eine DLP erscheinen auf der wir eine Seite bekommen sollen...
Frage: Kannst du mir die 5 Neuentdeckungen für dich aus der letzten Zeit verraten und was sind maßgebende Einflüsse für euch?
Antwort: Neuentdeckungen generell im Moment gerade die Musik von Moondog. Vielversprechende Bands aus der Szene sind momentan für mich Causa Sui,Monkey 3 und die Truckfighters sowie in Deutschland Spaceship Landing...
Maßgebende Einflüsse sind für mich so viele, dass es jetzt hier eigentlich den Rahmen sprengen würde, aber mal kurz: Jazz von Louis Armstrong über Wes Montgomery bis Coltrane, klassische Musik, moderne Klassik von Webern über Varese bis Moondog, alter Blues und Americana, psychedelischer Pop von den Beach Boys über die Byrds bis zu den Beatles, psychedelischer Rock von Cream bis King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix, 70er Hardrock ala Grand Funk, Mountain oder Mayblitz, 60er Soul bis hin zu Funkadelic, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield und vor allem Shuggie Otis, New Wave und Artverwandtes von Joe Jackson über The Cure bis hin zu Dead Can Dance, NoiseCore Bands wie Victims Family und No Means No, Zappa, spät 80er/früh 90er Rock wie z.B. Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Monster Magnet über Neurosis, Rollins Band bis Kyuss und an neuen Bands verschiedene Sachen von Motorpsycho über Ween bis Calexico und dann vor allem die uns derzeit umgebende Underground-Szene mit Bands wie Rotor, Hypnos69, Dozer, Josiah oder On Trial um nur ein paar zu nennen...
Und Mani und Philipp haben schon wieder ganz andere Einflüsse, von denen sich manches natürlich überlappt...
Frage: Zu Elektrohasch; wie kommen eigentlich neue Bands zum Label, bzw. wie entsteht eine Zusammenarbeit?
Antwort: Meist hat sich das über direktes Kennenlernen bei gemeinsamen Auftritten ergeben. Über Demos eher selten, da ist ungefähr eines von 50 interessant. Generell gilt, daß die Musik mir so gut gefallen muß, daß ich sie mir zuhause gerne immer mal wieder anhöre, dann muß die Band natürlich in einen gewissen Szenekontext passen - Rockstarträume und -allüren und Musikbusinessquatsch kann und will ich nicht bedienen. Und zuletzt muß es natürlich auch in den gegebenen äußeren Rahmen von Elektrohasch bezüglich Reviewkontakte und Vertriebsstrukturen passen, sprich ich muß die CD über meine Kanäle auch verkaufen können...
Frage: Wie gehst du mit Situationen um, die beispielsweise Gas Giant dem Label beschert haben?
Antwort: Letzten Endes hat man immer mit Künstlern zu tun und da läuft natürlich vieles auch mal ungeordnet und chaotisch - Abmachungen werden nicht eingehalten, die Kommunikation funktioniert nicht, usw. Dass nicht alles so klappt wie man sich´s vorstellt oder Leute auch mal auf einen wirren Film kommen und komische Vorstellungen entwickeln habe ich einkalkuliert, das gehört dazu. Deswegen lasse ich mich davon auch nicht weiter beeinflussen oder ärgern und bin den Leuten auch persönlich nicht wirklich böse - aber die entsprechenden Konsequenzen muß ich dann halt wie im Falle Gas Giant ziehen. Die Band hat ja sehr viele Leute vor den Kopf gestoßen, und denen fühle ich mich halt auch verpflichtet.
Letzte Frage: Welche Bands (ob mit oder ohne Label) hättest du mit Elektrohasch am liebsten unter Vertrag?
Antwort: Viele habe ich ja schon ;-). Am ehesten fallen mir jetzt Causa Sui und On Trial ein...

Pushead cover for Thrasher in January 1998. Back then you could discover a lot of cool music in skate videos, I don't know why it all gets so monotonous and kinda *boring* nowadays, or perhaps that's only my impression because we grew up so differently in the 90s. I even discovered stoner bands in videos, like Fu Manchu in a 411 video spotcheck at legendary Burnside park.

Retro Rock has always existed, it's not just a 2010s to present thing. And there have always been talented bands that flew a bit too low under the radar, or maybe, the further away they are from the center of the scene, the festivals and the clubs, the harder it gets to get known. Italian bands for example seem to have a hard time, and here I have EMMABLU (listen here and in concert) as an example of both: talent and being extremely underrated.
Okay, maybe it would have helped if they sang in English instead of Italian, but I think that's what makes their own style. Although they have long since disbanded, I still like them a lot, they are like a modern equivalent of Balletto Di Bronzo and the Progressive Italian 70s. Their drummer also played with Da Captain Trips and Midryasi and then suddenly disappeared. I would love to hear what he's up to these days. Ciao Fabio, grazie per la musica!

Oozing Goo was quite a unique band, somehow Psychedelic Rock but also more, with jazz-trained keyboarder Louis Rastig who was also leader of this young group from Berlin. Check out their EP on youtube, and also this clip of a live show. In their later career they performed with two drummers at once, one of them Sash from Berlin stoner-group Operators, and guitarist Max Appeal who still plays in jam psych outfit Pyrior.

Glimpses into the original stonerrock.com and I may talk more about this in the future ;) Actually I wished I would remember all the old website-adresses and magazines, and even more that this trusty waybackmachine had saved every little graphic. Also Roadburn had a quite amazing website back in the day with stories written by the musicians themselves, Acid King, Ed Mundell of The Atomic Bitchwax and so many more … oh, the memories!
