El Coco is a boogeyman found in the folklore of many Hispanic countries. The name comes from the Spanish and Portuguese word for “skull.”
Like many boogeymen, El Coco is used by parents to frighten disobedient children. Lullabies are sung claiming that if children misbehave, El Coco will steal them away and eat them.
No consensus exists on El Coco’s physical appearance. It is said to change into many horrible forms, most often a large shadowy mass.
