Loki’s costume at the end of S2E6 was perfect.

Yes, every part of it, down to those slippers.

And here’s my unsolicited (and delayed) thoughts on the matter.

First, let’s talk about his robe. Not only was it utterly beautiful, down to the draping and the deep, rich shade of green (and I mean come on, would we expect anything less?), its style was incredibly symbolic.

If you look at previous Loki ensembles, especially the ones that include a horned helmet, there is an air of grandeur and finery about them. The exquisitely stitched, buttery leather; the shiny gold trimmings and metal armor accents; the dramatic, billowing capes and overcoats. Even the silhouette of these looks is broad and structured — one might even say severe. Everything about these past looks screams “Look at me; I’m important” and reinforces Tony’s own observation in The Avengers that Loki is a “full-tilt diva” — he longs for the respect and attention that he deserves (and has been denied almost all of his life) and that longing is reflected in his clothing. They are reminiscent of the royal palace in which he was raised. They allow him to be battle-ready, because he’s had to fight and claw for every scrap of love and attention he’s managed to get. They represent a broken prince. A warrior cloaked in royalty. A would-be-king.

Now, compare that to his robe in Loki S2E6. It isn’t flashy. It has a soft silhouette. The shade of green is deeper and richer than we’ve seen; more earthy. An earthy shade of green which, in my opinion, is a nod to Yggdrasil, the cosmic tree that he will weave the branches of the multiverse into. The gold trimming across the front is subtle and understated - I even missed it at first and didn’t realize there was any gold trimming on the robe at all until I got a closer look later. It is simple. The draping is reminiscent of the robes worn by Buddhist monks. His robe reflects a Loki that has more wisdom and humility, and who has realized that being a good king — a proper god — means he will spend his life in service to others. It is the robe of a man who is confident and self-assured and knows exactly what kind of god he needs to be.

Now let’s talk about the slippers. I noticed that they got quite a bit of flack immediately after the finale aired. And I get it — they’re an odd choice, especially when we are so accustomed to the dramatic boots and finely-crafted and statement-making dress shoes he typically dons. For similar reasons as the robe, they are symbolic and fitting for Loki’s development into a wiser, more humble character. Don’t get me wrong, these loafers are still impeccably stylish, and no doubt they are of the finest craftsmanship, because this is still Loki we are talking about here. But they have a purpose, and that purpose is to get him to his final destination. These simple slippers barely even protect Loki’s feet, showing us a kind of vulnerability that we’re unaccustomed to seeing from Loki. He isn’t guarded in this moment; he’s open, connected to his purpose, and sure of himself. The shoes aren’t for battle; they aren’t meant to impress. They are meant to serve.

Now, about what is, quite possibly, my favorite feature of the costume. The horns. These iconic horns which we’ve associated with Loki from the very beginning take on an entirely reimagined look in the finale. First of all, they are bigger than any set we’ve seen resting upon Loki’s brow. So big, in fact, that they weren’t actually a physical part of the costume Tom Hiddleston wore. So big that they would likely hinder his performance if he actually had to bear their weight on his head.

In addition to their size, the horns are made of the same temporal-infused material from which both HWR’s talisman and the citadel at the end of time are constructed. Gone are the opulent golden horns that glisten and shine with the grandeur of royal finery. These horns are dark and heavy. They symbolize the unfathomable weight of the burden that Loki bears in his godly endeavor to save the multiverse. The golden temporal material that runs throughout the horns like veins is reminiscent, to me, of Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending broken things with gold. And in a way, Loki is a broken thing that has been healed and mended throughout his personal journey of self-acceptance and friendship, and is now more beautiful than he ever has been. More humble. More selfless. More godly.

In addition to the horns, the cape, too, is the largest we’ve seen Loki wear. And while at first, this dramatically oversized cape may seem to stand in opposition to the humility that the rest of the outfit encapsulates, it works. It works because, like the horns, it is symbolic of the burden Loki has chosen to bear. This cape would be unbearably heavy; it would make even the most basic movement difficult. And on top of its sheer size, his cape even becomes torn into strips that are woven into the timelines themselves, literally securing his burden — his service to the multiverse — around his neck.

Lastly, I want to talk about the way this outfit manifested. There’s been a common thread throughout this discussion about the humility and selflessness that this ensemble puts on display. And while that’s true, we’re talking about a relative level of humility and selflessness, when compared to Loki’s previous tendencies. This is still Loki we’re talking about here. He’s got a flair for the dramatic. He’s nothing if not intentional about the way he presents himself. And the way he marched down that gangway like it was his own personal runway, while his clothing fell away in shreds and tatters to reveal this completely fresh but familiar look, was completely on-brand for him. It was theatrical. It was glorious.

His outfit at the end featured accessories that were heavy and larger than life. Those parts were a burden.

It wasn’t short on the style and drama that we’re so accustomed to seeing from Loki. It was glorious.

And every part of it, down to his humble shoes, was fit for purpose.

One look at this finale costume and you know, without doubt, that Loki is burdened with glorious purpose.

Chilling Love

Summary: Your ice powers eventually reveal Loki’s Jotun form

Words: 2112

Genre: Good ol’ fluff

A/N: I don’t know why but I’ve been really Loki deprived LOL. Am I the only one who feels this way? Also if you want to be tagged for future imagines please let me know! Feedback is appreciated!

“Y/N, can you be a sweetheart and freeze this ice tray?” Tony requested, giving you a smug smirk.

You rolled your eyes, taking the last bite of your breakfast as everyone in the kitchen gave a chuckle.

“Very funny Tony!” You exclaimed with much sarcasm.

“C’mon Tony, give it a rest.” Steve grinned, before bringing his cup of coffee to his lips as he leaned against the kitchen counter.

“No, I’m serious, there’s no ice left in the freezer,” Tony retorted while gesturing to the freezer beside him, “I just want my orange juice chilled. Is it that hard to ask?”

With a huff, you walked over to the counter. Placing your hand above the water-filled ice tray you let your powers go to work. A misty and icy energy emitted from your hand and within seconds the water was completely frozen into ice. Grabbing a few pieces of ice, Tony plopped them into his glass of orange juice.

“A thank you would suffice.” You grumbled.

“Thank you for making my orange juice 20 degrees colder than usual.” He sneered.

You rolled your eyes for the umpteenth time that morning. You swear that your eyes will rotate all the way to the back of your head someday. Reaching up, you touched the back of Tony’s neck with a frosty hand, making him jump and squeal,

“Fuck sakes your hand is freezing!” He yelped.

Everyone erupted with laughter as you snickered at Tony’s reaction. In the corner of the living room area, little did you know a certain dark-haired demigod was watching the entire scenario, his smirk covered by the book he was currently reading.

Due to your ability to freeze objects, you were a cold person. Literally. Because of your powers, your body was colder than an average person’s and that meant your skin was chilling to the touch, your hands especially. Which also meant you could have a little fun with the temperature of your cold exterior.

“Language!” Steve emphasized, shaking his head with a chuckle.

“I swear if you say ‘language’ one more time…” Tony muttered as he glared at Steve, “Y/N, can you put Capsicle back on ice please?”

The room broke out in laughter once more, the loudest coming from Thor, while a few groans could be heard in the background. Suddenly, a hand on your shoulder diverted your attention,

“Ready for our morning training session, my pet?”

You didn’t even need to turn around to know who was talking to you.

“Yup. There’s just one thing I need to do before we go.” You replied with a playful grin.

Reaching over the counter, you grabbed Tony’s glass of orange juice and froze it within seconds, turning it into a large cylindered ice block.

“See you guys later!” You called over your shoulder with a laugh.

Loki smiled widely at you as the two of you headed to the training room.

Tony frowned at his now solid orange juice, “I think someone has been hanging out with the god of mischief for too long.”

“They’re absolutely perfect for each other. They’re both cold-hearted.” Sam chirped from the couch.

“Well, I think they’re cute together.” Nat admired as she watched you grab Loki’s hand, making him run down the hall with you, “I love seeing them so attached at the hip.”

“As ironic as it may be, I do believe that Y/N warms up my dear brother’s heart,” Thor beamed, “It’s been decades since I’ve seen Loki smile like that. Her wits bring out the jovial side of him that I’ve missed for so long.”

“Let’s just hope they don’t do anything else besides chilling.” Sam snorted.

And as if one cue, multiple eyes rolled at Sam’s comment.

You grunted as you threw a fist towards Loki’s face. With swift movements, he quickly blocked your punch with his arm before throwing a punch back. You ducked under his hit before swinging your leg for a fast kick. Loki hurriedly took a few steps back, dodging your kick. He lunged at you with another punch, making you bring your arms up to protect your face. His fist came in contact with your arm lightly, the force barely hurting you. Everything suddenly became a blur to you as Loki speedily gripped your forearms, bringing them behind you to restrict you in place. He pulled you close, making your back bump into his chest.

“You’re pulling a lot of your punches today.” You teased while panting.

Loki’s breath fanned against the side of your neck, his breathing just as heavy as yours, “I don’t want to ruin your beautiful face, love.”

Your cheeks were slightly heated from the vigorous training, but oh boy did they just get warmer just now.

After releasing his grip on your arms, you were about to turn around when you felt one of his arms snake around your waist. Your breath hitched in your throat as you felt Loki’s chin rest on your shoulder gently. You felt your heart race as his chest was pressed against your back again.

The relationship you have with Loki was difficult to describe. If someone were to walk in the two of you at that very moment, they would immediately assume that the two of you were an item. However, you and Loki weren’t dating. You both have strong chemistry with each other and acts of affection were normal day to day occurrences between you two. Neither of you have decided to act upon pushing your relationship further, but you could understand as to why Loki doesn’t want to advance yet. Your current relationship was comfortable.

Slowly turning around, you reached up to wrap your arms around his neck to hug him back. Loki tightened his embrace around your waist, bringing you closer to him as he rested his chin on your shoulder once more. Gentle moments like these made your heart full and you couldn’t help but appreciate Loki even more. Being in each other’s presence was a safe space and Loki wasn’t scared of being vulnerable around you. With you, he was able to let down his walls and be himself without anyone to judge.

As the both of you pulled away, Loki made an uncomfortable expression as he circled his wrist round and round. He held his wrist in his other hand, trying to massage the muscle.

“Loki are you okay?” You asked with concern.

“I’m alright, love.” He said as he continued to do wrist circles.

“I went too hard during training today didn’t I? I’m sorry.” You apologized.

Loki furrowed his brows, “Don’t be ridiculous, this isn’t your fault. I should have been more careful.”

Reaching forward, you lightly grasped his arm and hand to examine his wrist. You noticed the slight swelling of his wrist, concluding what was wrong with it.

“You sprained it during combat practice,” You stated as you touched his wrist with a very light touch, “I’ll go get you some ice.”

“You could use your powers.” He joked.

You chuckled, “Don’t go anywhere alright? The infirmary has tons of ice packs there-”

“No, I’m serious.”

You tilted your head in puzzlement.

“Freeze my wrist.”

Your eyes widened as you glanced at his wrist.

“Are you crazy?!?” You exclaimed, “I’ll give you an ice burn! An overexposure to my powers will damage your skin!”

Loki gulped as he kneaded his swelling wrist. With a snap of his fingers, Loki had transported the two of you away from the training room. You blinked as you took in your surroundings. Realization seeped in quick as you recognized that you were standing in the middle of Loki’s room.

Slowly reaching out, Loki grabbed your hand and guided it to his sprained wrist.

“Your powers will not hurt me, love. Trust me.”

You shook your head, “Loki I-“

“Please,” He said with pleading eyes, “Do it for me.”

You searched his eyes, trying to find any hint of doubt that was hiding in his mind. With a reluctant sigh you eyed Loki as you very hesitantly used your powers. As your hand hovered over his wrist, the energy of your power gradually increased. You carefully watched the level of your power as you were super anxious about hurting him. Suddenly, Loki’s wrist began to turn blue, the hue spreading down his hand and forearm. You gasped, immediately stopping your powers as you covered your mouth in shock.

“L-Loki I knew I shouldn’t have done that! I’m sorry-“

“Look it’s fine!”

Lifting up his arm, you watched as the blue colour slowly disappeared, gradually turning back to his normal skin tone.

“See? You didn’t hurt me.” Loki calmly stated.

You opened your mouth, trying to formulate the logic behind what you just saw but no sounds came out.

Loki rocked back and forth on the balls of his heels, noting how stunned you were.

“…There’s something that I haven’t told you before.” He said in a low voice.

“Loki what-“

He grabbed your hand gently, making you stop your sentence midway.

“I suppose the time has come for me to show you who I really am.” He said, his eyes scanning your face while letting out the breath he was holding in. You furrowed your brows, unsure as to what Loki meant.

“Close your eyes.”

You shook your head lightly before doing you were told, slowly closing your eyelids. A few seconds had passed when you suddenly felt the temperature of Loki’s hand drop. Your heart began to race. The uncertainty was making you anxious.

“Alright. Open them, love.”

Gently opening your eyes, you gasped at the sight in front of you. Loki’s pale skin was now a chilling blue hue. Your jaw dropped as your eyes scanned his face, observing the patterns that were engraved on his face. His red eyes caught your gaze for a moment before he looked down towards the floor. Your eyes trailed down his neck before you followed down his arm to the blue hand you were currently holding.

Loki cleared his throat as he began to explain everything, from how it all began with him born on Jotunheim, to his frost giant form that he has concealed from everyone. As he was describing his Jotun form, you couldn’t help but stare at him. You were simply awestruck by his appearance.

“If you’re appalled by this form, I apologize. I… I just wanted to be honest with you.” He said as he was about to pull his hand away from yours.

Your grip tightened as you shook your head.

“Are you serious Loki? You look absolutely stunning.” You breathed.

Slowly, you reached up to cup the sides of his face, your thumbs and fingers gently tracing over the patterns on his face.

“You’re not disgusted?” He asked as he gripped your hands that were resting by his jawline.

“Loki your Jotun form is gorgeous,” You breathed, “I love the colour of your skin, I love how your enchanting your eyes are, I love how much you have grown ever since I’ve met you and I’m so proud of how far you’ve become. I love you.”

Your breath hitched as you accidentally let your feelings slip. Your eyes widened as you let your hands fall from his face. You began to nervously play with your fingers.

“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have-“

Your words were cut off by a pair of chilling lips covering yours. Your eyes widened as you felt Loki’s lips slowly move against yours. As the initial shock wore off, you gradually closed your eyes as you kissed him back. Your hands found themselves pressed against his chest as his arms wrapped around your waist, pulling you closer. His lips moved down towards your jaw, kissing lower and lower until he kissed your neck. You sighed as he eventually found your sweet spot, kissing it over and over.

Releasing his lips from your skin, he pressed his forehead against yours as the both of you were regaining your breaths.

“You have no idea how long I dreamt of you saying those words,” Loki whispered, “I love you so much.”

You smiled as you pecked his lips. Loki’s smile mirrored yours as he began to place kisses all over your face. He placed tender kisses everywhere, from your cheeks, your forehead, your nose, then back to your lips.

You chuckled as you pulled away, “It’s so ironic.”

“What do you mean my love?” Loki asked as his hands comfortably rested on your hips.

“We’re both technically cold inside and out. But right now, I can’t help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside.”

Loki laughed, “Me too my love. Me too.”
