Another interesting part of The Balad of Songbirds and Snakes is its themes of innocence, freedom, and childhood when you put it in conversation with the main Hunger Games trilogy. We know that Katniss Everdeen is considered pure and I would argue Katniss is also very innocent throughout the series, despite, well, everything. Katniss gets to hold on to a part of childhood that Lucy Gray just doesn't. Katniss (before the cave) has never been kissed, has never had a boyfriend, and has never done anything like that. Katniss is still a girl, although she is forced to grow up in other ways. She is in charge of Prim, responsible for both Prim and her mother's survival. She must engage in illegal trading, and she must leave the District to hunt, an offense punishable by death. Yet in many ways Lucy Gray has had a harder life. Lucy Gray was ripped away from one way of life and forced into another, she was thrust into adulthood -- as Coriolanus is told she is 16 going on 35. Lucy Gray drinks, she alludes to doing things with men for money, she has children to worry about, she has a past lover, and so much more. Lucy Gray has been through too much too quickly. YET in many ways, Lucy Gray has enjoyed so much more freedom. There is no fence stopping her from going into the woods, she can earn her keep with music, she knows life outside of District Twelve, and I think there's more but I've forgotten. This is fascinating to me.
