Have you heard of OnlyFans?

It is a social media platform like YouTube or Instagram.

However, access is not open to everyone. Only subscribers ("fans") can view photos and videos posted by OnlyFans content creators. Most plans cost around 10 USD (13.50 AUD) per month, with optional tips.

If you visit the OnlyFans homepage, you will be prompted to "sign up to support your favorite creators". The platform describes itself as a place where "creators can monetize their content and engage with their fanbase."

So if you're new to OnlyFans, you might be surprised to learn that it's overwhelmingly considered an adult content site. The phrase "starting an OnlyFans" is widely understood to mean someone selling access to erotic or sexually explicit photos and videos of themselves.

Study fans only

In a new article for Porn Studies magazine, I analyzed 100 news articles (from February to December 2020), 100 OnlyFans memes (collected in January 2021), as well as 100 posts on the official OnlyFans blog (from mid-2018 at the beginning of 2021).

These sources represent different perspectives. News articles reflect prevailing opinions. Internet memes - remixed fragments of popular culture - reveal our shared values. Meanwhile, official blog posts can tell us about the image only fans are trying to cultivate.
