You know something about Marty’s personality that I really love? He is just such an endearing, polite guy. And his manners don’t take a vacation, even in high-stress situations.

Take the scene at the Peabody farm. Marty’s just watched Doc die, gotten chased by terrorists, traveled back in time, & crashed through a barn. He’s completely disoriented & scared out of his mind. Nobody would fault him for remaining in the DeLorean and just crying and/or screaming continuously for several minutes. But what does he do?

Yup. Our sweet Marty is sure to find the time to apologize for the inconvenience he’s just caused the Peabodys. I mean…it could just be that he’s experiencing so much anxiety & shock that he literally can’t think of anything else to do, but still. Of all the ways to react, he decides to tell them that he’s sorry. (And how do they respond?? By SHOOTING at him. Rude.)

And then when Marvin and his band help to free Marty from the trunk! At this point, Marty likely assumes the plan has completely failed. He knows Biff has his mom trapped in the car & is probably, again, scared out of his mind at the thought of what’s happening. There are SO many things for him to be terrified of right now.

The safety of his mother. The fear of what might be happening to his father. Having to make it to the clock tower before the lightning, which might not even matter considering how everything is falling apart and he likely won’t even exist soon anyway.

Once that trunk opens, it would make total sense for him to just book it without a single glance at the Starlighters, right? HIS ENTIRE LIFE IS AT STAKE & manners very well may take a back seat to his other priorities. But…

Marty hops out of that trunk, makes sure he returns the keys to the correct person, and then thanks them before taking off. It only takes two seconds, but it’s just always stuck out to me that one of Marty’s thoughts is, “Oh, better make sure these keys get back into the right hands! Who’s the owner of this fine vehicle? Hey, thanks, everyone!”

Whether these responses are coming automatically as a result of stress, or simply because Marty is just that polite, I still find it to be an interesting aspect of his character. He’s just sweet. Marty is sweet, everybody. (Except for when he’s called chicken & immediately wants to lay the smackdown on people, but that’s another story)

Me and my friends were watching the back to the future trilogy recently, and we realised that Marty McFly goes through so much trauma, it’s insane.

He goes through more shit than any other character I’ve come across

Here is the list we made that notes every single physical and mental traumatic thing that happens to Marty

Marty McFly’s trauma (not including comics, tv show and video game)

Physical injuries

Back To The Future Part 1

- Crashes car into the barn

- shot at by farmer and tripped

- Hit by a car and hits his head on concrete leaving him unconscious for 9 hours

- Crashes into people whilst skateboarding

- Punched in stomach and thrown in car

- Almost passes out and fades into no existence

- Crashes car again

- Throws himself down hill

- Collapses in house

Back To The Future Part 2

- Knocked out by biffs men and is unconscious for 2 hours

- Punched in stomach by biff

- Hit by door and knocked out by his past self

- Kicked in stomach by biff

- Shot at a lot

- Cans thrown in his stomach

- Fingers caught by Stricklands chair

- Driven and almost crushed against some trees

- Elbowed to the face and punched

Back To The Future Part 3

- Falls down hill and crashes into fence, knocking him out for 6 hours

- Dragged by ground by horses and hanged (which almost killed Michael j fox in real life)

- shot and thrown back (whilst wearing bulletproof vest)

-Thrown back by train

Mental trauma

Back to the future part 1

- Witnesses friend shot and is almost murdered by terrorists

- Wakes up in his mothers bed and finds out he was undressed by his mother

- Mother makes out with him

- Witnesses his mother get SA’D

- Constantly trying to save docs life and doc refusing to hear Marty’s warnings

-witness doc “dying” again

- has to live his life knowing that the world and family he grew up knowing no longer exists and that the “marty” his family in the new timeline know, no longer exists.

Back To The Future Part 2

- Learns of his fathers murder and that his mother has been abused by his fathers murderer

- Alternate reality got in car accident and lost ability to play guitar and gets fired in dead end job

Back To The Future Part 3

- Deal with the fact that he was going to die in 3rd film/ doc was gonna die

MARTY MCFLY NEEDS A HOSPITAL AND A FUCK TON OF THERAPY

HE GOT KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS 4 TIMES AND LIKE 2 CAR CRASHES, HE WAS HANGED AND HAD TO DEAL WITH THE DEATH AND ABUSE OF HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS MULTIPLE TIMES

Whilst his mum was crushing on him 😭😭

Don’t even get me started on the game and comics 😭😭
