descriptions of dissociation
Depersonalisation
Common: ‘I felt strange / weird’, ‘I felt as if I was floating away’, ‘I felt disembodied / disconnected / detached / far away from myself’, ‘apart from everything’, ‘in a place of my own / alone’, ‘like I was there but not there’, ’I could see and hear everything but couldn’t respond’
Less Common: ‘puppet-like’, ‘robot-like’, ‘acting a part’, ‘I couldn’t feel any pain’ ‘like I was made of cardboard’,  ‘I felt like I was just a head stuck on a body’, ‘like a spectator looking at myself on TV’, ‘an out of body experience’, ‘my hands or feet felt smaller / bigger’. ‘when I touched things it didn’t feel like me touching them’
Derealisation
‘My surroundings seemed unreal / far away’, ‘I felt spaced out’, ‘It was like looking at the world through a veil or glass’, ‘I felt cut off or distant from the immediate surroundings’, ‘objects appeared diminished in size /  flat / dream-like / cartoon like / artificial / unsolid’ Other dissociative symptoms
Memory: “I drove the car home/got dressed/had dinner but can’t remember anything about it”, “I don’t know who I am or how I got here” (fugue state), “I remember things but it doesn’t feel like it was me that was there”.
Identity: “I feel like I’m two separate people/someone else”.
Other: “I felt like time was passing incredibly slowly/quickly”, “I get so absorbed in fantasy/a TV programme that it seems real”, “I felt an emptiness in my head as if I was not having any thoughts at all”.

DPDR Reminders
DPDR is a dissociative disorder, it’s a diagnosis. DPDR stands for depersonalization derealization disorder and it was added to the DSM-V to better fit shared symptoms of depersonalization disorder and DDNOS.
You cannot be diagnosed with both DPDR and DID/OSDD-1. You cannot be diagnosed with DPDR if your symptoms are better explained by another disorder (such as a psychotic disorder). You can’t be diagnosed with DPDR if a physical condition is causing your symptoms (such as seizures) or if drug use is causing your symptoms.
DPDR is characterized by constant or episodic disconnect from the self and/or reality. Passing feelings of disconnect are common, but you cannot be diagnosed with DPDR unless these feelings interfere with your functioning (are symptomatic).
Depersonalization is a primary symptom of DPDR, and it might look like: feeling as though your body or parts of your body are not real/not belonging to you, feeling outside yourself or disconnected from activity or emotion, feeling numb or emotionally disconnected, feeling disconnected from your memories or as though your memories aren’t real, feeling like a robot or “on autopilot.”
Derealization is a primary symptom of DPDR, and it might look like: focus or panic over existential beliefs, feeling as though the world is distorted or unreal, feeling as though other people are unreal/flat/lifeless, being unable to recognize surroundings or others, feeling as though time/distance/other sensory inputs are distorted or warped, being unable to distinguish between dreams and reality.
Some other common symptoms include: anxiety as a reaction to depersonalization or derealization, dissociative amnesia, and identity disturbance.
The majority of people with DPDR have a history of trauma. Without any trauma causing dissociation, it’s very important to rule out physical causes. Non-traumagenic, symptomatic dissociation is rare.
If you suspect you have DPDR, it’s a good idea to talk with a doctor to rule out other conditions that may be causing your dissociation.
Talk therapy can help with dissociation. Outside of therapy, working through trauma and building grounding skills can make DPDR more manageable. Therapy and medication may both be used to treat DPDR.
DPDR is a disorder, not shorthand for depersonalization and/or derealization- they are symptoms!

I have compiled a folder of Depersonalisation/Derealisation disorder self-help resources
It contains…
Six different tests used by psychologists to diagnose DPDR
Overcoming Depersonalisation and feelings of Unreality - a book written by several experts in depersonalisation disorder that includes some of the latest research about dissociative disorders.
The Stranger in the Mirror - a book by M.Steinberg a renowned expert in treating dissociative disorders
A meditative audiotape especially for DPDR
Several Cognitive Behavioural Therapy worksheets
Links to several other self-help resources including video and audio content, additional books and a forum for people with DPDR.

There is such little information about dpdr compared to other more common disorders like anxiety and I have still yet to meet a health professional that I haven’t had to explain the disorder to. Because of the general inaccessibility to DPDR resources and treatment, I have decided to compile some free resources, most of which were recommended to me by my psychotherapist. I wish I had access to all of these when I first started experiencing depersonalisation, so I hope this will be helpful to some people!
