If you are a person who wakes up everyday wondering why you are in the same position you have been in for years, I can almost guarantee you it is because you were in the negotiation phase of your life for too long. Life requires an abundant amount of action. There is no action taken in the negotiation and explaining away phase. Let me explain to you how this works- when it’s early and you don’t want to get up, you wake the fuck up! When you don’t want to go to run, you put your shoes on and go run regardless if it is hot, cold, windy, snowing, etc. If you just got home from school and are having a hard time with a particular subject, you sit your ass down and start studying that very subject again. If you are an athlete and you just can’t hit the shot, after practice, you pick the ball back up again until you get it. These examples are people who don’t negotiate with themselves. This shit can be exhausting. Even more than exhausting, it can be frustrating and mind-numbing. The amount of work and effort required can be overwhelming which is why the majority of us love to negotiate our goals and “explain away.” Explain away is very simple- if you have kids and they eat shitty food, you will say you eat shitty food because they eat shitty food. If you have a spouse who doesn’t work out, you will use your spouses’s lazy ass as the explanation for your laziness. Some of you make yourselves feel better by telling yourself that people in better life situations than you didn’t have the same challenges and problems that got you stuck in the negotiation/explain away phase. One day in the last century (around '98) we randomly encountered one another on the bricks at UM Law and we struck up a conversation. That day I met one of the most extraordinary souls full of a genuine and dynamic kindness who I came to call, the Lady Eisner. (@ramennoo) Time passed, we graduated and one day I was informed you had began to date my law school room doom, Mr. Russell. On this day in the photo you became Mrs. Russell and I started calling you, the former Lady Eisner, because I am silly like that. B-Russ is my brother which makes you another little sister on my family roster. Three amazing children and an inspiration journey of courage and strength later the physical you had to move on to something greater and unseen. The impact and joy you delivered is everlasting and we gather today to celebrate one who can never be forgotten.
