A Vital Part of Ryoma’s final Free Time Event

This may seem like a normal line at first, but this word choice is deliberate

From his first event with Shuichi, Ryoma shows enough willingness to talk about tennis as Shuichi cared enough to go up to him, then he quickly stops. His second one continues that, starting what seems like a reoccurring pattern as Shuichi gets Ryoma to open up without even doing much himself. Ryoma let himself get lost in the past by himself, notices that, and calls Shuichi out for goading him into reminiscing. When Shuichi pushes, he then deflects back to his lover, which goes over into the fourth event where he reveals the details about the mafia.

What’s special is that in every single one of these events, blatantly or subtlety, what gets Ryoma to open up is Shuichi’s resolve, which he specifically points out. As opposed to the flamboyant and stubborn resolve with Kaito who Ryoma contrasted with heavily, Shuichi’s boldness is less extravagant and more comforting for Ryoma to open up to, and Ryoma opening up as easily as he did isn’t a surprise given all the hinting about Ryoma still having his emotions, whether they aren’t shown due to his intentional suppression or inability to fully express that due to his depressive tendencies.

This revolve reaches the climax shown above. Ryoma calls himself helpless at the end of his fourth event, but Shuichi’s determination to working things out, something that at this point Shuichi is completely unfamiliar with doing, is strong enough for Ryoma to start playing with one more game. He spilled out his entire story to Shuichi already, and despite seeming gloomy at the end of that event, expressing these emotions instead of pushing them down allows him to actively enjoy himself, and all of this bottling up is released during this game.

The screenshots above are the pivotal point, because Ryoma’s self loathing is what dominated him previously even outside of his free times alongside a mix of hinting emotional moments, him stating a willingness to sacrifice himself, still looking out for others with some inspirational quotes, and more.

Here, that doesn’t dominate him at all. He lets go of all of that worry, and most importantly he’s able to casually talk about hitting vital spots, referencing the murder that’s haunted him like it was nothing. This is a huge step and while it might seem odd, expressing all of this for the first time in who knows how long is ultimately healthy for his character. For once Shuichi took the active role and even if his involvement seems minor, coaxing and sticking with Ryoma despite everything is exactly what he needed.

All of this shows that he is fully serious when he says he’s committed to picking up what he left, even though he’d likely go back to the prison where he was before if he survived the killing game. This admittance is ultimately what makes his rediscovered determination towards his previous joy impactful, as his last line shows a man who is hopeful enough to at least try and open himself to a long and needed recovery.
