Things I've learned in the past month:
Completing most of the diys you receive increases the likelihood of receiving new diys. I'm down to one unfinished diy and have received several new recipes in the past month when my average until now had been one recipe every few months.
Gifting homemade food greatly improves the villager photo gifting rate. I've received more than half of my villagers' photos after gifting them food three times since last week. Win/Win since I'm working on the cooking Nook Miles goal.
