Earthquake Stories
I was walking the stretch of Capitol on my lunch break and noticed sacks of rice piled up, columns of bottled water stacked up, waiting to be picked up. Store corners, dark nooks and even a guardhouse were transformed into impromptu drop-off centers for the people of Bohol. Strangers helping strangers. It's overwhelming. It's heartwarming. And, I will say it again. The magic of tragedy is that it brings out the extraordinary in the ordinary. It's wonderful to be a Cebuano. It's great to be a human. We are not a hopeless race after all.

Not many see that sparkle in their eyes after you’ve been gone only for a minute or two.
Not many welcome the slobbering and the wagging and the shedding.
Not many are amused by the yipping, the yapping and the whining.
Not many spend more for them than we do for ourselves.
Not many worry when they’re sick.
Not many cry when they leave.
Not many mourn when they cross.
Not many understand why we love our dogs.
Not many understand us.
A few. A handful.
And maybe that’s why I love my dodots.

to outliving her litter-mates from an unfortunate accident,
to being rescued, fostered and sheltered,
to contracting the deadly distemper virus,
and being treated,
to being one of the few dogs who survived it,
And now, finally, finally....
You're going home.
We've shed tears when we saw your picture. We've shed more tears when you almost died. Now, we're doing it again.. because we're so happy for you.
