How to identify lab grown diamond?
A diamond always looks perfect, whether it’s man-made or naturally grown. To tell the difference between the two is quite challenging. Resembling the chemical properties and physical structure, they are hardly distinguishable. Even an experienced gemologist cannot identify the difference with the naked eye. However, there are certain techniques and methods to identify a lab grown diamond from a natural one. These techniques include identification of diamond at a professional laboratory or using devices developed by diamond grading organizations.
Inscription and Jewelers Disclosure
A lab grown diamond usually have an inscription on its girdle stating that it is lab grown. The lettering of this inscription completely depends on the size of the diamond's girdle. However the inscription is so small that it requires a serious magnification. So one needs to have a 14x loupe magnifying glass to see the lettering and identify if the diamond is man-made.
While some responsible jewelers often disclose that their diamonds are man-made. Often the buyer is concerned about the jeweler selling lab grown diamond as natural one. Some of these diamond dealers also give their clients to inspect through laser and check the inscription. Hence here the honesty of the jewelries a must.
The HPHT Type II Test
A diamond is classified based on its color and physical properties. This examination is necessary to differentiate various diamonds into their types i.e natural, man-made or treated. The HPHT type II diamonds are those that are purest amongst all types. They do not contain any measurable nitrogen or boron impurities that are found in natural diamonds. These brilliants have the highest thermal conductivity and are often colourless.
Lab grown diamonds are Type IIa diamonds and hence this method of identifying the lab grown diamond becomes easy for a gemologist. The diamond tester gives a clear indication about how pure the stone is. Only 2% percent of naturally grown diamonds are Type II and they are extremely expensive. So this test is one of the method one can choose to detect the diamond type and identify if it’s lab grown.
Our all diamond are – As grown – no indication of post-growth treatment. This laboratory grown diamond was created by high pressure high temperature (HPHT) grown process. Type II
UV Radiation Test
The accurate amongst all, this test is taken to be 100% sure whether the diamond is lab grown or natural. For this test, you need to send the diamond to some professional labs that undertake this kind of inspection. There are few machines and devices developed by DeBeers and GIA ( Gemological Institute of America) that are used for the identification. They have names like Diamond Sure, Diamond Check and Diamond View.
In this technique, a diamond is exposed to UV Radiation (not harmful to humans) to get the result and analyze the details of the stone. In the case of CVD diamonds, the machine even enables the gemologist to see the growth lines of a brilliant as to how layers are created by building one material onto other. To get this kind of accurate result, you must send your diamond to the GIA lab where a complete report of your stone will come to you stating whether it is lab-grown or not.
Though it’s really difficult to identify man-made diamonds, these were some of the few high-tech methods used by the jewel industry.

Things you should know while buying lab-grown diamond
We often get worried while buying a diamond as this decision is quite intimidating. So many questions pop up in our head as to what factors should be considered and what should not. But there’s nothing to worry about if you learn and understand what a lab grown diamond is. So let’s just first understand what is a man-made diamond.
Lab-grown diamonds also called man-made or synthetic diamonds are created in laboratories under extreme heat and pressure. They have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Hence lab grown diamonds are real and worthy.
Below are some of the tips that one must know while buying a diamond that’s environmental friendly:
Understand the 5C’s – Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight & Certificate
The 4C’s is the most important factor that is considered not just while buying a lab grown diamond but even a natural one. These 4C’s affect the value and cost of the diamond that you are buying.
Cut: The cut adds beauty to the diamond. One should detect if a diamond’s cut is ideal, shallow or deep as it affects the brilliance of the stone.
Color: Absence of color leads to more price. You can get diamonds in colors but a colorless one is hard to find. The most widely used color grading scale is D to Z.
Clarity: A diamond should be crystal clear without any impurities. A pure diamond is rare and expensive. So before buying you should always get the  diamond checked.
Carat weight: Carat is the weight of the diamond and it differs as per the shape and size of the diamond. The more the carat weight, the higher is the price.
Certificate:
Do your best research:
Take the first step by searching the places that offer lab-created diamond. It doesn’t matter if you are buying online or from an offline store, you should see how reputable the company is. Most diamond dealers claim simulants as lab-created diamonds which can mislead anyone. Hence you should be aware of the basic facts about man-made diamonds and the place from where you are buying them.
 Price:
A lab-grown diamond costs 65-75% less than a natural diamond. The cost gets affected by the quality and carat weight. As the weight and quality increases, so do the price gets higher. So if you’re looking for a larger stone and don’t want to pay much for it then lab diamond is just perfect for you.
 Look for grading:
A certified gem is always preferable. Check if the diamond that you are considering has a grade report from a reputable organization like GIA, IGI, EGL or USA. Do not purchase if it doesn’t come with any grade.Certification serves as an important proof to understand the individual attributes of a specific diamond.
Shape and budget:
Explore the different shapes of lab grown diamonds. Check the size and see which shape fits within your budget. There are fancy shapes available like pear, heart, marquise, emerald, oval and round. Amongst all these shapes, the round shape diamond costs more. So make a wise choice here.
 Compare:
There are multiple options available in the market for lab grown diamonds. These options often confuse the buyers with their claims and guarantees. So compare them and choose the one that fits best in your demands. Do a thorough research before buying a loose diamond.
