While upscale and full of choices, the President thought the Arcuris could do better. . The College had several cafés, a pub, and an automat throughout its various buildings. The offerings were mediocre & the students were clamoring for Starbucks that would take their meal plans & a revamping of the dining hall that served up vats of institutional food. This is based on someone I barely know, but haven’t seen in about a decade…a tragic codependent figure who gives up all agency in order to not be alone. Don (Dundonald) was a cog in the College’s finance dept, perfectly content doing mundane analyses. There were limited opps & the more ambitious would move on after getting experience. While Don wasn’t stupid, his nickname was Dunce to the younger staff. . There was nothing memorable about Don. One would be hard pressed to recall anything about him, other than a dad joke or the occasional off-color remark. . . Don’s first marriage disintegrated abruptly. His second wife was the result of a rebound relationship borne out of desperation...known chiefly for her inappropriate attire & baking strange gluten free olive oil cakes. Don’s choices made it clear he sought out a specific personality type: domineering w/a bit of a mean streak, resembling his paternal grandmother. He no longer had friends from his past & he rarely interacted w/his kids, siblings, or parents. His social life was on lockdown. . As cracks in Don’s 2nd marriage appeared, he would get belittled about how his first wife cuckolded him by banging his buddies on his basketball team in Yorktown, as well as having an affair w/a respected figure in their church. Maybe it was because she was so much like her mom that it seemed as if any of her father’s genetic material never had a shot, as if it were scared away. . Her stepdad (Michael) died suddenly on a hike near Breckenridge. It was a freak accident, where a friend lost their footing and sent him down a steep ravine where he hit his head. Michael treated Taylor like his own daughter & she never gave her biological dad any thought…until Michael died. . What started as a curiosity turned into a bit of an obsession. Her mom knew nothing of what happened to her dad. It didn’t take much sleuthing to find him given genealogical & genomic databases. He was living in the West Village in a dingy apartment in a building that was part of an inheritance. . Taylor, a photography MFA, took to spying on her dad & taking photos of him. She found out he was overweight, reclusive, and constantly had bluetooth headsets on. He hadn’t had a regular job since 2007 or so when he started getting inheritances & became a full time ne’er do well. He frequented a bodega & a bakery for coffee w/Stevia & soy. They shared a love of the same junk foods. She asked the bakery owner about him: . . “Oh, that guy. Strange man. Says many odd things. He sniffs the air & makes odd comments to the women.
