gay books that aren’t Gay Books, an elaboration

i made a post like this about six months ago but i’ve realised a) that as a wlw, there are literally No books about wlw on there, and b) ive read loads more books that are Fab and deserve a place on there

so to fit on this list, there are only 2 conditions

there must be lgbt+ characters in the book

said characters’ entire plotline must not revolve around them being lgbt+. this can be referenced, but they have to have wider development. eg: trc is acceptable as even though ronan goes through a process of accepting he’s gay, his arc is also involving accepting other (spoilery) things about himself

feel free to add your own as i’ve not read nearly enough fiction about wlw, as long as it’s not just to do with being lgbt as this is a list for people who want to see themselves in fantasy, crime, mystery, adventure, school novels specifically without having All the focus on being lgbt+.

OKAY ONTO THE LIST

carry on by rainbow rowell. this is the first book i ever really read where the sexuality of the characters wasn’t the most important thing about them. it isn’t for everyone (read: blatant harry potter references) but i did and still adore it. mlm relationship, queer & gay. 5 stars.

the raven cycle by maggie steifvater. the representation is nowhere near as good as some of the others on this list but it’s this high up because of the writing and the characters. mlm relationship, gay & bi. 5 stars.

the foxhole court by nora sakavic. again, not astronomical rep, but the plot and characters make up for it. mlm x2 relationships, one main. 5 stars.

six of crows by leigh bardugo. fantastic cast of characters. mlm relationship, gay & bi, and bi female character. 5 stars.

a darker shade of magic by ve schwab. beautiful worldbuilding. mlm relationship (both bi i think?) which is also own voices. 5 stars.

vicious by ve schwab. fantastic dark plot. ace main character, kind of adheres to the “ace characters are heartless” on which way you look but i think basically everyone’s a little bitch in the book so. 5 stars.

they both die at the end by adam silvera. so sad but it’s not Bury Your Gays as such since that’s the entire preface of the book. mlm relationship, gay & bi. own voices! 5 stars.

a gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue by mackenzi lee. mlm relationship. 4 stars.

radio silence by alice oseman. gave me an existential crisis. wlw and mlm solidarity, bi female mc, gay m and gay f, gay demi m. 4 stars.

i want to put more than this by patrick ness on here (4 stars) because he’s a fantastic ov rep and i love him and this is his most non-Gaytm book, but if you do want a book about being gay in the deep south then def read release and im breaking my own rule here but it’s amazing 5 stars.

ink and bone by rachel caine has a couple that remind me of holt and kevin from brooklyn nine nine (just much sadder.) worth reading just for the concept. mlm minor relationship. 4 stars.

again, i feel like you could squeak the song of achilles by madeline miller on here by the skin of its teeth. dont read this if you dont want sadness. 4 stars.

daughter of the burning city by amanda foody is a fantastic spooky book and so original. bi mc and aspec love interest. 3.5 stars.

ash by malinda lo. cinderella retelling. i didn’t personally like this one too much but it’s a cute wlw relationship. 3 stars.

history is all you left me by adam silvera. i very much didn’t like this one for personal reasons but i know a lot of people love it. mlm rep with a bi character (watch out bc the mc is slightly biphobic.) 2 stars.

i haven’t read adaptation by malinda lo yet but my friend loved it. it has a bi mc with a bi love triangle.

likewise i haven’t read of fire and stars by audrey coulthurst but my friend LOVED it with a passion. wlw relationship.

As much as I love Incredibles 2 for what it is I’m kind of miffed they didn’t find some way to miraculously bring this jerk back from the dead and make him the villain

According to Wiki and the NSA Supers Database on the special edition DVD of the first movie, this is what it says about Gamma Jack: “Easily recognized by his wave-like hairstyle, he was a favorite of the ladies (his original name being Handsome Jack) and was prone to megalomaniacal impulses, believing Supers to be a ‘superior race.’ He chose to save attractive women over and above other innocents and had a particular issue with ‘killing’ female supervillains he was attracted to, but always ended up doing so anyway. These impulses and traits caused the NSA great concern, putting him under close ‘A Level’ monitoring as a result.” Like…damn. That’s a potential supervillain in the making right there. I know that according to the KRONOS database he was killed by one of the Omnidroid prototypes, but remember, Syndrome’s life signs probe failed to detect Bob simply because he hid behind Gazerbeam’s skeleton (seriously, what??), and the only reason Bob didn’t get away is because Helen later tripped the tracking device on his suit. Considering Syndrome’s tech was flawed enough to completely miss a living human being just because he was hiding, it’s not outside the realm of possibility to assume Gamma Jack could have also survived and just hid out until he figured out a way off the island. So, I know this is just conjecture, but what if he had somehow survived and managed to make it back home? He would’ve had to change his identity of course to make sure Syndrome didn’t locate him again. But given his views on supers and his “megalomaniacal impulses”, both the supers ban and Syndrome’s attempt to completely eradicate them would’ve not only reinforced his beliefs but also have been the perfect catalysts for this guy to completely go off the deep end and start his own radical campaign against non-supers. “Oh, the regular people of the world don’t appreciate us and want us to either hide in the shadows or die? Well then, regular people should all die or be subjugated by supers” - a survival of the fittest kind of thing. It would’ve been really fascinating to see him re-invent himself and use his charm to work his way up in the world of politics in an attempt to surreptitiously put supers in positions of power so as to dominate the “inferior” part of the population, and then ultimately come into conflict with supers like the Incredibles and Frozone, whose primary goal is to use their powers to help others rather than subdue them, despite the fact that they were wronged by the very people they’re trying to help. Also a super who’s basically bordering on being a creepy ass serial killer but “we have to be subtle about it because Disney”? Sign me the hell up. Idk, I think it’s a compelling story that could’ve been told, or still could be told if Brad ever decides to just suck it up and make a third film. Just throwing it out there *COUGH*

I just finished babysitting my friend’s children, and she has most definitely mastered the no spanking/alternative discipline route. I always talk about taking it because I don’t believe in abusing children, but I’ve never personally seen it in action by a Black parent. Her children are 2 and 5 and they are the kindest, nicest toddlers I’ve ever met. They listen to her because she’s their mom and they automatically recognize she’s important and she gives them what they want (love and affection and rewards). In return they like to clean for her and give her artwork and cuddles all of the time.

To get them to listen to her, she makes sure to listen to them and what they’ve got to say instead of telling them to shut up all the time. The 5 year old asked her a few months ago why you can’t eat food that was on the floor after picking up food on the floor, and she explained it calmly and clearly. He asked 4 other questions after that and she answered all of them. He was satisfied and happy with the answers, and ever since he hasn’t done those things. She lets them gush and gush about Hot Wheels or Team Umizoomi and engages with them and counts with them and everything, so they never feel alone or neglected enough to not want to obey.

My friend lets them make mistakes by themselves on the rare chance they don’t listen so they can learn from them and let that be punishment enough. For example, the younger one we’ve been telling not to go near the dog cage because he doesn’t like dogs. He went near it a while ago, got his hand licked, freaked out, and hasn’t been anywhere near it since. The board on the wall that she uses has a column for each boy horizontally, and vertically are all the traits she wants them to have, like being nice, listening to her and their teachers, eating their food, cleaning up, having manners, etc. They get a sticker whenever they do it for the day, and they lose all their stickers when they break a habit. That’s enough punishment for them, so they don’t break it.

When they wake up, it’s cleanup time, or bedtime, she plays what she calls “musical habits”. She puts on a playlist of their favorite songs (it’s like 20-25 minutes) that make them feel motivated, and they should be finished getting ready or cleaning by the time the last song is over. If they’re not, they get a toy from their toy bin taken away or an Oreo from their snack bag taken out (aka eaten by her). But she hasn’t ever gotten to that because they always finish. They don’t even like hearing the consequences lol. And I just wanted to say I really enjoyed seeing good parenting by a Black woman that wasn’t abusive or harmful to the child’s development, it gave me inspiration and hope. Just had to talk about it somewhere.
