"That's why we were caught off guard when we left."
"That's when Ling was taken?"
"Yes. We left close to ten that night. When we exited the building, we weren't acting overly friendly, just in case a reporter or someone was lingering. I saw a black van and assumed it was exactly that, until it started up and sped over to us."
He stopped and pushed a hand through his hair, looking away from me.
"The kidnappers?"
Looking forlornly at my desk, he simply nodded. He rubbed his eyes, pushing his glasses up.
"They wore all black and moved quickly. They...grabbed Ling and bolted. I couldn't do anything."
"You didn't call the police?"

"The man who's missing is my lover. And I was with him when he was taken."
Well, that certainly explained his reluctance to come forward. I doubt Mrs. Holden would be too thrilled to hear that particular piece of information, but the media would love it.
"Alright, then. Tell me about that night."
He seemed surprised that I would gloss over the obvious elephant in the room. But, hey, he 'preferred dick', too, and it wasn't any of my business. Mr. Nobody cleared his throat nervously.
"That night, we were at my office under the guise of a late dinner meeting. It wasn't an unusual event and Ling claimed to be acting as a liason for his family's business. I had my secretary, Miss Lemons, pick up some of the usual fare from Porker's and then sent her home for the evening."
"So, there was nothing unusual. Nobody acting strangely, nothing out of place."
"Exactly. That's why we were caught off guard when we left."

I applaud their dedication to their art. It wouldn't do this magnificent piece justice to go down without a fight.

"I have certain information on the matter..."
"And?"
Mr. Nobody shifted, looking uncomfortable. I knew that look well: the look of a man with dirty laundry. But he'd have to expose everything if he wanted me to crack this case.
I waited quietly and stared him down. For a moment, the only movement was from the smoke curling between us, intermingling with the silence in an ethereal dance.
He firmed his resolve, then lost it again. His glasses flashed light, but his eyes stayed dull. Finally, he looked to me, worry written across his face. Was it for himself or someone else?
"The man who's missing, Ling Hung, is my lover. And I...I was with him when he was taken."

In a seedy corner of the city, a furtive man seeks help.
He found himself in my office, requesting my services on a missing person case.
"Please, uh, Richard, is it?"
"I prefer Dick."
"Dick. Right. Please, you have to help me. The police lost his trail days ago and I can't go to anyone else with this."
"And why is that, Mr...?"
"Mr. Nobody."
I had recognized the mayor the minute he burst through my office doors, but if he didn't want to be recognized, then I wasn't going to press it.
"Alright, then, Mr. Nobody. What exactly is it that's preventing you from coming forward?"
"Well...I have certain information on the matter..."
