Breaking in the new @theartistshag x @trader_sams_tiki_bar glassware I got @disneyland last week with a Rum drink! It's a really beauty of a glass and it will go great with the rest of my Trader Sam's drinkware. I bought some grapefruit bitters a while back to make the Hot Zombie by @oldmanmerrell and was wondering what else to make with them, so I had a quick chat with Skipper Kelly while at Trader Sam's and he suggested experimenting with Rum and Gin drinks. I took my go-to Rum Old-Fashioned specs and subbed out orange bitters for the grapefruit ones - and it works very, very well! The grapefruit bitters have a bit more zing/bite which stands out nicely while not making the during off-balanced. Mai Tai Monday! Work was rough today so I thought I'd transport myself to someplace tropical with a drink. A Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Swizzle to be exact. While purported by one of Donn Beach's ex-wives to be the "original" Mai Tai (and that Trader Vic stole it), the drink is not really close to the flavour of Vic's famous Mai Tai. But, it is still very tasty! Turning Red was outstanding! Had to draw a bit of Mei fan art. After seeing Bao, I was so excited to see more from @domeeshi and she and the crew behind this film did not disappoint. Tiki Time! Breaking in the new glassware by @murderqueen and @thehulagirls - and since it's a Zombie glass, a Zombie is served in it. I used the @smugglerscovesf specs for the drink (my rum selection is presented here as the glass's "back-up dancers"). The one thing I am sorely missing is mint for garnishing...I have to get a plant and stick in in my yard (in a pot though - don't want my yard turning into mint farm). Tiki time! Made meself a Voodoo Grog - a Trader Vic Bergeron (@tradervicsworldwide) drink from the 1950s (as found in Potions of the Caribbean by @official_beachbumberry). This drink is unique in that it includes an oft-times "scary" ingredient: raw egg white. I've finally taken the plunge recently with using egg whites in cocktails, and I am really enjoying the results. While the instructions for this drink called for mixing in a drink mixer, I opted to do it in a shaker - doing dry shake to emulsify the egg white with the other ingredients and then shaking again with ice to chill. The result is a great head of velvety foam and a super smooth mouth-feel. The rest of the drink is pure tiki: 2 rums (Bacardi 8 and Clément VSOP, specifically), Lime juice, Grapefruit juice, Allspice Dram, Passion fruit syrup and a bit of honey - CLASSIC. Due to a lack of Creme de Cacao (an oversight on my part), I have yet to make the Tortuga cocktail suggested to go in my new "The Modernists" tiki mug (created by @tikifarm based on the Tikis popularized by @tradervicsworldwide) But I have been itchin' to break it in so I found something to shake up and pour in it. Since the mug is a tribute to Trader Vic Bergeron, I opted for a drink which I felt was representative of him. I picked the Amaro Do Cocco found in the book "Easy Tiki" by Chloe Frechette. Trader Vic may be best known as a Tiki master, but his first establishment was a bar called Hinky Dinks and he was no stranger to mixing up more "standard" cocktails. The Amaro Do Cocco combines a standard (nay, classic) Negroni with the tiki-ish Piña Colada, which - IMHO - was well representative of Trader Vic: take the classic and classy, but make it Tiki. The drink itself is creamy, rummy and bitter with great balance. Finally used that bottle of Midori that had been lost to the very back of my liquor cabinet to put together this @trader_sams_tiki_bar little one. I used the adapted specs from @theeducatedbarfly and did my best with getting the Maraschino cherry "eyes" right (even though one looks like it's shedding bloody tears). At least the ears look good. The drink itself is interesting and delicious, especially for something that I'm sure was mostly ordered to be "instagrammable" (I know, I'm being a bit of a hypocrite posting it - but I made this one myownself with me own two hands). When you have white Grapefruit juice to kill, male another #TikiDrink! This is The Breezeway, created by @thehulagirls for his #SpikesBreezewayCocktailHour. Spike mega-garnishes this drink and I was missing the mint and orchid garnishes but I did my best with what I had (luckily, i did have the @kontigotikibar Chinese Lantern pick). I also used a Spike's Breezeway Cocktail Hour Zombie glass versus a Tiki Mug, but I think that's forgivable. 🤷🏽 The important thing with this is the drink - which is really great! It's Tiki Tuesday! I decided to do as Spike @thehulagirls would do and make a "drink in the glass (well...tiki mug) that it's served in!" This is the #TangaroaCooler which is served in the #TangaroaSurfboard mug at @trader_sams_tiki_bar at @disneyland. I took one major liberty with the specs: I subbed out agave syrup and used ginger syrup (home-made) for a bit more bite. Tiki time! With the holiday season in full swing, I decided to make a Mele Kaliki Mai Tai. The specs I used are the ones used by the Skippers at @tradersams Grog Grotto at the Polynesian Village in @waltdisneyworld. The only changes I made were to sub Don Q white rum for Bacardi Superior and to grate cinnamon and nutmeg on the top vs garnishing with a cinnamon stick. One of the neat things that #Disney had @disneyland (specifically, at DCA) when we were there was an activity booth centered around the holidays. They had crafts for each major winter holiday - including a bit of multiculturalism with Christmas. My daughter needed a break and asked to do some crafts - she colored a Mexican tradition inspired "papel picado" lantern and a couple of Mickey ornaments. Since I was standing around, I also made a quick (and frankly, sloppy) Donald-as-Mickey ornament because, it all may have started with a mouse but we all know who #1 is. The cast members ended up really digging the mash-up and asked if they could keep my ornament and post it up on the supply cart. Not gonna lie, I was quite chuffed that they asked and - even though it was not my best - I let them have it. One thing I experimented with on my #Sonya6000 this @disneyland trip was doing dark ride photography. The rides are - as their name indicates - pretty dark and you're moving at variable speeds through them so getting decent pics in there is a chore.
