She smiled, tears still streaming down her face. Kate reached out to touch their daughter's forehead, her touch feather light. She feared if she touched their little girl any harder, their daughter would just disappear.
"Yeah. Yeah she is." And Kate smiles a little, because, yes, her daughter has passed, but also because this is her daughter's birth. And the only unfortunate nature of this was that they were one in the same.
"She really is," she murmured, lying back against the bed. Sweat matted her hair to her face and the ache of labor still throbbed in her body.
"We should name her," she said quietly. Kate needed a name to hold onto when her daughter's body was unavailable to cradle close to her chest.

Castle paused, cocking his head to the side slightly.
Hold her.
A part of him wanted to… but there was another part that made him cringe at the little bundle. Not because he didn’t love her, but because he couldn’t take the pain. The pain of losing someone before he ever got to know her.
"Yes." Rick croaked out, without thinking any more.
The little girl was transferred to his arms, gently, as if she was the most fragile little human in existence. He knew when he looked at her, with her transparent skin, that she was. And at that moment he never wanted to let go.
"Kate…" he whispered, "She’s beautiful." And his heart broke in a trillion pieces.

"She's already having you call her "him" and giving you paperwork? Damn," she laughed. Gates was definitely a much harsher person to any newbie. Kate kind of understood. Ish. Gates had her way of running things, though, and she wasn't the chief, so it didn't really matter.
"Oh, and call me Beckett. It's what most people call me," she said..
"What's going to happen when you get married?" Castle called back. Kate rolled her eyes.
"They can't exactly call both of us Castle, Castle," she replied. Castle shrugged a silent "touche." He was definitely being attention deprived. For being a fully grown man, he was quite the six year old.
"And that's my other partner. Richard Castle. Only difference between you and him is that Gates doesn't pay him," she laughed, hoping that would also make Castle not be so grumpy.
"Javier Esposito and Kevin Ryan are partners, too. They're not mine, officially, but we mostly always get assigned to the same cases. You'll work closely with them. And if they're extra teasing, don't take it personally--they take personal joy in being smartasses.
"Need a tour? I can show you around," she offered with a smile.

As he finished off a page of the work he owed, Enjolras heard a pair of footsteps heading into the room - no, not just one pair. Two. More than one person was entering the office now…? There were several people in the room with him, he knew, but he had thought they would arrive one at a time.
A woman, he saw, and a man; he recognized that one, at least. Richard Castle, the novelist who was shadowing his partner. That meant he would be along with them on their cases, he supposed.
Pushing himself to his feet as the detective introduced herself, Enjolras offered her a smile and a nod, taking her hand and giving a firm shake. “Henri Enjolras, it’s nice to meet you Detective.” He wasn’t certain what he ought to call her; partners were on a last name or a first name basis, as far as he knew, but he was brand new… He would figure that out later.
Shaking his head slightly, he glanced around the room, focusing on Castle for a moment. “He hasn’t, not today. Last thing he told me was to expect to be shown the ropes on my first day even if it’s a paperwork day.”
Admittedly, he had been expecting as much anyway. Being in the homicide department… It was an unnerving thought, to know that they would be called upon at any moment to go and investigate a body, to determine how it had been killed and who the murderer was. Unnerving, but exciting. Enjolras was a touch childish for it, perhaps, a touch naive, but… he was excited to begin. And supremely proud of working his way up to this point.
"Right now," he said after a moment, gesturing to his desk. "I’ve been working on the stack of paperwork on my desk. That’s about all I knew to do so far."
