pulled the existing sunroof aluminum/felt seals. found that it requires some tongue notch kind of foldins.. not using the right terms here.. need to sand by hand the existing adhesive off and not affect the paint.
Tumblr media
noticed there is a rubber seal, not seen discussed.. or aftermarket seals around for it.. The orange was someone’s paint job on the trim.. since removed

Picked this up for a great price today. Im about to paint then swap out this decklid. Ill still attempt to work the existing damage on Flo’s decklid... but it will never be as smooth as an original. Matching paint is my concern.. expecially with the roof’s overbuffed condition. Thanks much Jim.

Made it out to Jim’s Custom VW in Columbiana OH today. Picked up a 68/69 decklid in blue and a front drivers side fender. Also a book on engine rebuilds. Saw this ol’ monster while there.

Got around to changing the oil which appeared to have not been done in some time. Most components including the oil screen were a bit clogged. Only photo taken at the time. Idling alone sounds better after the change. Idling does tend to fall in and our briefly but maintains.. Carburator may need adjusting. Undercarriage needs cleaned thorougly.

The damage is hidden by the aerosol paint so some tests with graffiti remover was made tonight. The top layer removed easily but any more will require much application/elbow grease. I will likely empty a can on this but need to set up for better ventilation. The immediate results brought the color out. The paint matches well with the original paint. Before and After images:

First impression is that the interior is clean. Upon further inspection there is much surface rust, chips and rust stain. The car obviously spent time in the rain and the sunroof’s drainage facilities failed. The interior is dry and has new carpeting and seat covers. Detail of the interior to come with attempts at finer / detailed cleaning.
The body has been overly buffed/polished in the rear portion and has much exposed primer. There is litte to no rust on the roof. Other spots of rust near the base of the body have been found.
The decklid appears to have been hit and hammered out then painted with aerosol paint. The decklid presents the most rust due to the accident. The motor was not affected. The aerosol paint has orange peel effects and has been burnt in the sun.

Greetings. This is Flo. Found in Central Ohio USA. In October of 2021.
She is a 1968 Volkswagen Beetle, Sunroof. 1500cc with an automatic stickshift transmission. The color is Delta Green or Peru Green.. not sure. The name Flo originated from its original owner, Florence.
The bug is all original minus the interior carpet, bumpers, headlight housing and distributor/coil. 49000 Original miles. She was driven 300 miles home.. in a daring, foolish run. She since starts faithfully, but has a slight issue of leaking brake fluid when parked with the rear at an incline. The body and interior have seen better days but are in good condition. Pans are clean. Surface rust is the main issue.
I plan to embrace the current condition, the rust and age. I enjoy the smell, character and experience she has. Here at the blog, I plan to slowly restore, ensure our safety, and document the process and the community I encounter. At some point I plan on posting to other services but tumblr will serve as a home for now.
